00:01 - 00:05
Hi there class Welcome to module six. This week.
00:05 - 00:07
This week you're going to be learning about the individuals
00:07 - 00:12
with disabilities act and section 504 of the rehabilitation act.
00:12 - 00:15
You have several things to do this week.
00:15 - 00:19
You have to read two chapters chapter four and five you
00:19 - 00:23
have a video to watch that's included on the module homepage.
00:23 - 00:27
You have to power point presentations to review.
00:27 - 00:32
You have a discussion on 88 compliance in your hometown to participate in.
00:32 - 00:35
You have a written assignment where you're going to compare
00:35 - 00:36
and contrast
00:36 - 00:40
I PS in section 504 plans and you are going
00:40 - 00:44
to take an assessment on the information that you've learned.
00:44 - 00:46
So a couple of things about I. D. A.
00:46 - 00:50
Um it was originally enacted in 1975 as the public law
00:50 - 00:55
94 1 42 or the Education for All handicapped Children Act
00:55 - 00:57
has been reauthorized several times.
00:58 - 01:00
It was first reauthorized in 1986,
01:01 - 01:04
It was reauthorized again in 1990 and that's when they changed the
01:04 - 01:07
name from education for all handicapped
01:07 - 01:10
Children to the individuals with education,
01:10 - 01:13
individuals with disabilities act, I'm sorry.
01:13 - 01:17
um and then in 1997 it was reauthorized and
01:18 - 01:23
Information-related to or pertaining to transition rights and services for
01:23 - 01:28
individuals after once they hit that post school like 18-21
01:29 - 01:34
Um was included in the reauthorization in 97 and then finally it was
01:34 - 01:38
reauthorized in 2004 and they changed
01:38 - 01:41
the name again from individuals with disabilities
01:42 - 01:47
act. Two Individuals with disabilities Education Improvement Act.
01:47 - 01:49
It mandates several things that mandates
01:49 - 01:52
that all instruction for individuals with
01:52 - 01:55
disabilities must be specifically designed or
01:55 - 01:58
specialized instruction for that particular person.
01:58 - 02:00
Uh It mandates tape,
02:00 - 02:03
it mandates the least restrictive environment and it
02:03 - 02:07
mandates the use of individualized education programs.
02:07 - 02:09
And it also mandates that
02:10 - 02:12
Individuals between the ages of three
02:12 - 02:15
and 21 received specialized instruction under
02:16 - 02:17
the
02:18 - 02:21
Special education umbrella. Sorry about that.
02:21 - 02:25
It also mandates the use of procedural safeguards to
02:25 - 02:28
protect the rights of students and their families.
02:29 - 02:30
So with section
02:30 - 02:32
504 in chapter five
02:33 - 02:33
It's
02:34 - 02:38
so section five before came about as a result of the injuries that soldiers
02:39 - 02:41
received in World War One.
02:41 - 02:45
So when the government started to see that they had impairments
02:45 - 02:48
um physical or mental because of
02:49 - 02:53
the dealings that they had when um they were overseas fighting,
02:53 - 02:57
they realized that they had to do something to provide some kind of support for them.
02:57 - 03:01
And if you notice I didn't say disability. I said impairment.
03:01 - 03:05
So section 504 is different from I. D. A.
03:05 - 03:08
Because it mandates that you only have to have an impairment,
03:08 - 03:12
not necessarily a disability to receive services under five Before.
03:13 - 03:18
It also mandates that any place that receives federal funding has
03:18 - 03:24
to provide services under Section five before of the Rehabilitation Act.
03:25 - 03:31
And okay, so now here's information about your car, your discussion. So a. D.
03:31 - 03:32
A compliance in your hometown.
03:32 - 03:34
What I want you to do is visit three
03:34 - 03:37
of the locations that I've listed in the discussion.
03:37 - 03:40
I want you to go there and look around
03:40 - 03:42
um I want you to see whether or not
03:42 - 03:47
you think these area these places are in compliance.
03:47 - 03:51
They meet the compliance requirements of A. D. A. So is there 36?
03:51 - 03:53
Are the doorways 36 inches?
03:53 - 03:57
Is there enough room to exit your car if you're in a wheelchair?
03:57 - 03:59
Um Is there available seating?
03:59 - 04:02
So there's a list of questions that I want you to review
04:02 - 04:04
when you go visit these places.
04:04 - 04:08
Then I want you to report back and have a meaningful discussion
04:08 - 04:14
with two of your classmates. So it's I want you to have like cocktail conversations.
04:14 - 04:17
So these are things that you can bring up and obviously have
04:18 - 04:22
meaningful learn new things about different places essentially
04:22 - 04:24
from each other and with each other.
04:25 - 04:32
And then your assignment this week is you are going to complete um just a brief.
04:32 - 04:33
So what I want you to do is
04:34 - 04:40
create a comparison and contrast between I. Ps. And 504 plants.
04:40 - 04:42
And then after you've completed your chart,
04:42 - 04:45
I want you to in the next like three or four paragraphs.
04:45 - 04:48
I want you to dig deeper and really explain
04:48 - 04:50
Um the differences between the two
04:51 - 04:53
like mental impairments.
04:53 - 04:56
The difference between mental impairments and uh like
04:56 - 05:00
behaviors that students with CBD would display.
05:00 - 05:03
So just go into more detail and dig a little bit deeper
05:05 - 05:09
and talk about it more explicitly. The differences in in the similarities.
05:09 - 05:11
I also want you guys to make sure that you are still
05:11 - 05:14
continuing to work on your case briefing because as you all know,
05:14 - 05:18
eight weeks goes by really fast and if we're in the sixth week,
05:19 - 05:22
your final paper is going to be due
05:22 - 05:23
pretty soon.
05:24 - 05:25
And then finally
05:25 - 05:27
my contact information
05:28 - 05:32
is area code 8133002885.
05:32 - 05:38
And my email address is Rosenblatt underscore K at ut PB dot e D U.
05:39 - 05:41
I'm still really far behind my emails.
05:41 - 05:42
So at this point,
05:42 - 05:45
the fastest way for you to get in touch with me is by
05:45 - 05:49
texting me and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
05:49 - 05:50
And that is it.
05:50 - 05:52
I hope that you guys have a great rest of the week
05:52 - 05:54
and please let me know if there's anything I can do,
05:54 - 05:56
anything I can do to help you see you later.
05:56 - 05:57
Bye.
