00:02 - 00:08
first of all. Happy 25 years to the occupational therapy department and U. S. D.
00:09 - 00:14
I mean what can I say? This is probably one of the invitation I could not say no to
00:14 - 00:16
and said this is very close to my heart.
00:17 - 00:23
Most of my life is spent in USD 10 years as an educator in 14 years as a learner.
00:23 - 00:27
So quite a bit of time spent in USD.
00:27 - 00:28
Mhm.
00:28 - 00:31
So if I may say I'm not complaining but
00:31 - 00:34
I might just say they have actually gave me quite
00:34 - 00:38
difficult topics to discuss today and it's just challenging
00:38 - 00:40
because I need to compress it in 30 minutes.
00:40 - 00:43
So bear with me I'll try my very best.
00:43 - 00:44
Good thing.
00:45 - 00:47
I'm I'm I actually love a good challenge.
00:47 - 00:52
So here I am today and I was actually just meant to provide
00:52 - 00:57
a personal story like sharing my own personal story about balance and purpose.
00:57 - 01:01
But I actually reflected that my life is they're very much in
01:01 - 01:04
progress and so I cannot really walk the talk with you.
01:04 - 01:09
So I'd rather just give you other perspective about balance and purpose.
01:09 - 01:13
I mean don't get me wrong subjectively I feel very happy.
01:13 - 01:16
I'm quite contented and fulfilling life.
01:16 - 01:20
When we talk about balance and purpose we equate that to
01:20 - 01:21
our career.
01:22 - 01:24
Are we where we are supposed to be.
01:24 - 01:29
Have we maximized our potential in that in that area of our life
01:30 - 01:30
in
01:31 - 01:35
to most of us to it is about satisfying
01:36 - 01:37
and happy
01:37 - 01:38
family life.
01:40 - 01:41
So
01:41 - 01:46
in that sense if that's our idea of balance and purpose.
01:46 - 01:50
I may say that yes I do have a growing career,
01:50 - 01:54
it gives me a good challenge and it also compensates well thankfully
01:55 - 01:58
and I also have a very happy family life,
01:58 - 02:01
very grateful to marry my husband and also have a
02:01 - 02:04
three year old daughter who are both my bestest friends.
02:05 - 02:07
That friendship is so precious
02:08 - 02:14
and in terms of taking the biggest timeline, like the biggest thing in my timeline,
02:15 - 02:18
I think I did that when I finished my PhD. So
02:19 - 02:21
I mean generally I am happy
02:21 - 02:26
but actually being happy. It's not the topic that I was supposed to talk about
02:28 - 02:29
and most importantly,
02:29 - 02:33
reflecting to all of these things are idea of balance and purpose.
02:34 - 02:38
Do we really need all of it? Like do we need to have a degree?
02:39 - 02:41
Do we need to be married?
02:41 - 02:43
Do we need to have kids?
02:44 - 02:45
Do we need to have
02:46 - 02:47
a rewarding job?
02:48 - 02:50
So will all of these things
02:50 - 02:51
equate to
02:52 - 02:54
a balance and purpose purposeful life.
02:55 - 02:58
And if subjectively I felt happy.
02:59 - 03:03
Does it mean objectively I have this balance and purpose?
03:04 - 03:07
I guess we will all find out as we discover more about this talk.
03:08 - 03:08
Okay,
03:10 - 03:10
okay,
03:11 - 03:17
so they're still very important elements to the stock, finding your balance
03:18 - 03:20
and finding your purpose.
03:21 - 03:24
When I moved to Australia in 2017,
03:25 - 03:26
I lost the vote,
03:26 - 03:29
I realized that most of my life I spent in usd as an
03:29 - 03:32
occupational therapist and a psychologist and
03:32 - 03:35
a professor that I became my identity
03:36 - 03:38
when I left my comfort zone
03:39 - 03:40
Philippines and Usd?
03:40 - 03:47
I felt so lost no balance, no anchor and definitely felt like I lost my purpose.
03:47 - 03:50
I came to Australia to start a new life with hubby,
03:51 - 03:55
you know my gosh, she was the most exciting place of my life, you know,
03:55 - 03:56
like the league,
03:56 - 04:00
all those killing factors during that time it was and I still feel the same,
04:00 - 04:03
like I still feel grateful that we have a chance to be together,
04:04 - 04:10
no regrets to this day, but when you have to restart from scratch, you know,
04:10 - 04:12
the career that you have built on
04:13 - 04:15
The past 11 years
04:15 - 04:16
just gone.
04:16 - 04:19
You know, the transition is actually very tough
04:20 - 04:23
then actually having the PhD
04:23 - 04:26
have stretched me in all possible direction and
04:26 - 04:29
I find myself committing to a lot of ongoing
04:29 - 04:32
projects back in the Philippines in different countries like
04:32 - 04:36
Malaysia and in Australia with my current work.
04:36 - 04:41
So that that extra qualification actually meant more responsibility.
04:42 - 04:45
It became overwhelming at one
04:45 - 04:48
and on top of that I gave birth,
04:49 - 04:55
I mean obviously that is another big milestone. It's very rewarding for me.
04:56 - 04:59
But now, because I have my own child,
04:59 - 05:03
I am even more torn on having to choose my priority in life.
05:03 - 05:06
So all the things I did mention earlier,
05:07 - 05:10
the career, the family life,
05:10 - 05:11
the job,
05:11 - 05:13
your extra qualification
05:14 - 05:16
that actually made the equation even more
05:16 - 05:19
complex when we talk about balance and purpose
05:20 - 05:23
and there is a real struggle to buying balance and
05:23 - 05:26
purpose amidst the beautiful chaos of all of these things.
05:27 - 05:28
So how do you find it?
05:28 - 05:32
That's the million dollar question If I'm going to be honest,
05:32 - 05:34
I am still in the process of full discovery
05:35 - 05:37
and I want to take you all through the journey today.
05:37 - 05:41
So hopefully it may also lead you to what may be searching for.
05:45 - 05:48
So the next thing is about monotony. This is
05:49 - 05:54
Probably the overarching theme of 2020 and 2021.
05:55 - 05:59
We get easily drawn into the daily monotony of things,
05:59 - 06:00
especially during the pandemic.
06:00 - 06:04
You wake up, follow your routine, whatever it looks like.
06:04 - 06:08
Then you go to bed again and sleep the next day will be the same thing.
06:08 - 06:11
Okay, You can add a little bit of online shopping,
06:11 - 06:16
You can also add a little bit of K pop or add a little bit of K.
06:16 - 06:22
Drama in that, but it's still quite monotonous, it's still quite repetitive
06:22 - 06:25
because there's no weekends to look forward to.
06:25 - 06:27
You have no goal to keep you going.
06:28 - 06:30
No travel to plan and get excited about
06:31 - 06:32
no catch up
06:32 - 06:36
and no actual going to window shopping,
06:36 - 06:39
an actual store and looking out at those things.
06:39 - 06:41
It's just different feeling,
06:41 - 06:45
isn't it compared to online shopping when you try it on and all of it.
06:45 - 06:46
Like you actually
06:47 - 06:51
you actually feel the picture of things and all of that.
06:51 - 06:52
That's all gone
06:53 - 06:56
then that went on for almost two years.
06:56 - 06:58
That was stuff.
06:58 - 07:02
But why why would a repetitive routine like
07:02 - 07:05
this considered harmful to our mental health?
07:06 - 07:09
That's another important reflection that we need to
07:10 - 07:11
to actually
07:11 - 07:12
look into?
07:13 - 07:20
So in the next few slides, what I'm going to show you is actually a short video
07:21 - 07:25
that pretty much describes this monotonous lifestyle.
07:26 - 07:28
So that's the 1st,
07:28 - 07:32
1st part of our Roberto. It's all about balance.
07:33 - 07:37
So hopefully you enjoyed this little video
07:38 - 07:39
and we'll discuss it after.
