00:01 - 00:04
I'm Turkey Hill finger and I'm Riley Lab Focus, and
00:04 - 00:06
we are members of the Medical Academy at Perry High
00:06 - 00:09
School. The Health Foundation of Greater Muslim Grant was used
00:09 - 00:11
this year to conduct a Thanksgiving food drive.
00:14 - 00:16
We began this process by looking at our community and
00:16 - 00:17
need Perry.
00:18 - 00:19
Local schools had a poverty rate at 38%.
00:20 - 00:23
Prior to the pandemic, however, there has been much job
00:24 - 00:26
loss and families are experiencing much financial hardship.
00:28 - 00:29
We wondered, How can we help?
00:30 - 00:33
We reached out to a Perry local Schools care team
00:33 - 00:35
and discovered we could help students and their families in
00:35 - 00:38
our district and local food cupboards with our Thanksgiving food
00:38 - 00:41
drive. What is the care team?
00:42 - 00:45
The care team is developed and comprised of teachers, administrators
00:46 - 00:50
and staff for multiple community agencies, including law enforcement, mental
00:50 - 00:54
health, alcohol and drugs and other social service agencies.
00:54 - 00:57
Located throughout the county, the team works together in a
00:57 - 01:00
school based environment to address challenges facing the student population
01:01 - 01:01
and their families.
01:02 - 01:05
Each school district has a care team as a part
01:05 - 01:08
of as part of the Start County Educational Service Centre
01:09 - 01:11
and making sure students have access to food as part
01:11 - 01:12
of the care team's mission.
01:13 - 01:17
Mhm. We have worked with seven local food covered during
01:17 - 01:19
previous Thanksgiving food drives, and we reached out to them
01:19 - 01:20
to discover their needs.
01:21 - 01:24
These food cupboards are Perry Christian Church Read Urban Presbyterian
01:25 - 01:26
Church, ST Joan of Arc Church.
01:26 - 01:30
Can'T and Calvary Mission, Refuge of Hope, Salvation Army of
01:30 - 01:31
Masculine and Perry.
01:31 - 01:32
Helping Perry.
01:33 - 01:37
Mm. Throughout this endeavor in the fall, we wondered, How
01:37 - 01:38
are we going to be able to keep our community
01:39 - 01:41
and our students safe while trying to run a food
01:41 - 01:42
drive during a pandemic?
01:43 - 01:46
This dilemma was solved by a request from one of
01:46 - 01:47
our local food cupboards.
01:48 - 01:50
We were contacted by one of them, and they stated,
01:51 - 01:54
We are only accepting food gift card donations this Thanksgiving
01:54 - 01:57
season in order to keep our staff and community safe.
01:58 - 02:00
We thought this might just be the solution to our
02:00 - 02:02
problem. In order to still meet the needs of our
02:02 - 02:05
community and keep our students in our community safe.
02:07 - 02:09
We figured out how to run a food drive during
02:10 - 02:12
a pandemic, and we were able to raise $4000 in
02:13 - 02:17
total. We were able to donate $2250 to 33 Perry
02:17 - 02:20
families. If a family had four members or less, they
02:20 - 02:23
received $50 a family of 5 to 7 re $75
02:24 - 02:26
and a family of eight or more received $100.
02:27 - 02:31
We're We were also able to donate $250 to 7
02:32 - 02:36
local food covered at a total of $1750 to make
02:36 - 02:38
sure we were getting food necessary supplies to families.
02:39 - 02:42
We were able to secure food only gift cards that
02:42 - 02:44
could not be used to purchase tobacco or alcohol.
02:46 - 02:48
Let's look a little deeper at the breakdown of our
02:49 - 02:49
fundraising campaign.
02:50 - 02:53
This is how we grew $1000 from the Health Foundation
02:53 - 02:55
of Greater Masculine into $4000.
02:56 - 02:59
To begin with, we had left over from 20 21,000
03:00 - 03:01
and $77 in our balance.
03:02 - 03:05
We received the $1000 grant from the Health Foundation of
03:06 - 03:09
Greater Masculine, and all of this provided the momentum prepared
03:10 - 03:15
local school staff and students to raise $1923 for a
03:15 - 03:16
total donation of $4000.
03:18 - 03:22
Yeah, our mission was accomplished These are some notes from
03:22 - 03:25
the Canton Calvary Mission and Read Urban Church, thanking us
03:25 - 03:25
for the donations.
03:30 - 03:33
This entire process has had a huge impact on our
03:33 - 03:37
students, staff and community, and remind us that reminded us
03:37 - 03:39
of a quote from Coretta Scott King.
03:39 - 03:42
The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by
03:42 - 03:44
the compassionate actions of its members.
03:47 - 03:49
Very high school in the Peri Medical Academy Express a
03:49 - 03:52

03:52 - 03:55

03:55 - 03:55
of our project.
