00:01 - 00:03
Yeah. Hello, everyone I wanted to give you an overview
00:04 - 00:06
of what we're going to be doing in this class.
00:06 - 00:10
And so I've kind of divided up by activities and
00:11 - 00:13
outcomes that we're going to be covering.
00:14 - 00:16
So let me just start with the overview.
00:16 - 00:19
And so an overview of this course.
00:19 - 00:22
We're going to dig into terms terms terms chapter one
00:23 - 00:23
is all about terms.
00:24 - 00:26
Then we're going to get into a section that's going
00:26 - 00:29
to be about ethical theory, and then we're going to
00:29 - 00:31
get into a section that's about application.
00:35 - 00:39
Yeah, so I talked about theory just now, and so
00:41 - 00:41
what is theory?
00:42 - 00:45
It's just a framework for how we make ethical decisions.
00:45 - 00:49
And there are different frameworks in this course, two.
00:50 - 00:53
So, some examples of these frameworks are weighing the pros
00:54 - 00:56
and cons, maybe that's how you make an ethical decision.
00:58 - 00:59
What will happen if I do this, what will happen
00:59 - 01:00
if I don't do it.
01:00 - 01:04
Um We also make ethical decisions by determining what's good
01:04 - 01:06
for us um or what's good for others.
01:07 - 01:09
We also make ethical decisions by what is our duty
01:10 - 01:12
like. We may not want to do it, but there's
01:13 - 01:15
some kind of were duty bound to do it.
01:15 - 01:17
What does the universe tell us?
01:17 - 01:18
Um is correct?
01:19 - 01:22
And what do the moral rules tell us?
01:22 - 01:25
So, those are just some examples of these frameworks which
01:25 - 01:27
we're going to call ethical theories in this class.
01:29 - 01:32
Mhm. We're also going to use the case study approach
01:33 - 01:33
to do this.
01:33 - 01:35
So this kind of brings life into the class.
01:36 - 01:37
Can we look at real life examples.
01:38 - 01:39
So how are we going to do this?
01:39 - 01:43
Uh Students will find current event articles in order to
01:43 - 01:47
um show something that's happening in the news and then
01:47 - 01:48
they're going to look at it through the lens of
01:48 - 01:51
those frameworks or ethical theories and they're going to apply
01:51 - 01:54
it. What would be the right thing according to duty
01:55 - 01:57
versus what's good for the individual?
01:57 - 02:00
That's an example, will also be looking at people who
02:00 - 02:03
show moral courage doing the right thing, even when it's
02:04 - 02:04
very difficult.
02:05 - 02:06
Uh we'll look at the movie Gandhi.
02:07 - 02:11
Um there will be a final written assignment a ripped
02:11 - 02:13
from the headlines, which means you will kind of do
02:14 - 02:18
a deeper dive into a ethical topic that is currently
02:19 - 02:19
in the news.
02:19 - 02:24
And then of course there's also examples of real life
02:24 - 02:26
events in the textbook.
02:27 - 02:30
So when we say see case study approach in the
02:30 - 02:32
course, um that is what it means and we're going
02:32 - 02:34
to do that through a variety of ways.
02:35 - 02:37
So what kind of assignments are we having in this
02:37 - 02:38
class? Let's take a look.
02:39 - 02:41
Um of course we're going to have the foreign post,
02:41 - 02:42
the foreign eight.
02:42 - 02:46
It means you need to post over four different days
02:46 - 02:49
and you need to have at least eight posts and
02:49 - 02:50
they need to be related posts.
02:50 - 02:52
It means they need to say something that's substantive.
02:53 - 02:55
So just because you post does it mean that it
02:55 - 03:00
will get rated as related is the terminology that we
03:00 - 03:03
use and so really say something and I'll have information
03:04 - 03:04
on that later.
03:05 - 03:07
We also have quizzes, as I mentioned, the current events
03:07 - 03:09
assignments and then some written assignments.
03:12 - 03:15
So student learning outcomes, what I hope that you'll get
03:15 - 03:19
out of this class is the student will be able
03:20 - 03:21
to analyze numerous ethical theories.
03:22 - 03:22
Again, frameworks.
03:23 - 03:26
The students will analyze ethical decision making by using a
03:26 - 03:27
case study approach.
03:27 - 03:30
We talked about how we're going to find those case
03:30 - 03:34
studies. The students examine how ethics affect us personally and
03:35 - 03:38
socially. Um the student will apply various methods of moral
03:38 - 03:42
decision making and justify decisions made and you'll be able
03:42 - 03:45
to explain an ethical issue in writing.
03:46 - 03:49
So I hope that this gives you a good overview
03:50 - 03:51
of what it is that we're going to be doing
03:52 - 03:52
in this class.
03:52 - 03:54
So I look forward to the semester.
03:54 - 03:55
I hope you do too.
