00:01 - 00:01
Hi there,
00:01 - 00:07
my name is Kopeck and I will be introducing my Children's studies Law and Ethics,
00:07 - 00:12
final presentation for Children's Studies class 402 with professor living
00:14 - 00:16
First things first?
00:16 - 00:21
Um Children's Studies Law and ethics this course has been super amazing.
00:21 - 00:23
Um so today I'm just going to be sharing
00:23 - 00:25
a couple of things I've learned with you today.
00:25 - 00:29
Um and I'm going to be going in depth more
00:29 - 00:32
into what it means to make ethical and professional decisions.
00:35 - 00:41
Information I've learned um is basically just two main ideas how to advocate
00:41 - 00:46
and how to treat Childrens and families in a professional and ethical setting.
00:46 - 00:48
So basically um
00:48 - 00:49
advocacy
00:50 - 00:57
um means that I will be advocating for a child or a family in any situation.
00:57 - 01:01
Um and with advocacy comes along with
01:01 - 01:02
um
01:02 - 01:04
profession al Itty and um
01:05 - 01:08
ethical decision making. And so when we're
01:08 - 01:10
advocating for a child or family,
01:10 - 01:13
we truly do want what's best for them and we
01:13 - 01:15
want them to be in a safe and healthy environment
01:19 - 01:24
when it comes to treatment for ethical and professional decision making.
01:24 - 01:29
Um treatment is really about making the child safe,
01:29 - 01:31
making progress with the child and the
01:31 - 01:35
family to become something healthy and positive
01:36 - 01:40
um in a way that they didn't come to us before.
01:40 - 01:41
And when I say us,
01:41 - 01:46
um I mean the professionals who are treating who are counseling
01:46 - 01:49
um who are in therapy with the Children and families.
01:49 - 01:52
And so really it's just about getting them in a
01:52 - 01:55
safe setting and getting them in a healthy relationship.
02:03 - 02:07
So the next point you're going to be talking about is ethical obstacles.
02:07 - 02:12
Um what are some of the ethical obstacles that are gonna be blocking my path
02:12 - 02:18
or blocking any advocate or any person who is treating a child or a family?
02:19 - 02:24
So with these ethical obstacles to things just really came to mind,
02:24 - 02:27
we want to follow the client's best interest,
02:27 - 02:31
whether we are advocating or treating a child or a family,
02:32 - 02:35
we want what's best for them, We want
02:36 - 02:40
them to come to us knowing that we want what's best for them.
02:41 - 02:45
And so when it comes to this best interest piece,
02:45 - 02:46
um,
02:47 - 02:50
for instance, let's say it's a child that we're working with in general,
02:50 - 02:56
um this child has a tendency to run away self harm, uh,
02:56 - 03:02
makes very poor choices who are damaging their relationship with their family,
03:02 - 03:03
their peers.
03:03 - 03:06
Um, and even the relationship they have with themselves,
03:07 - 03:09
um, we want to follow the client's best interests,
03:09 - 03:12
We want um them to feel safe with us.
03:13 - 03:17
But in this ethical decision, the client's best interest
03:17 - 03:20
may not be coming to us,
03:20 - 03:26
may not be um getting that help or seeking um that help that they need.
03:26 - 03:26
And so
03:27 - 03:29
with client best interests involved,
03:29 - 03:34
we want to make those ethical decisions and that can be a very um
03:35 - 03:36
very
03:39 - 03:41
profound obstacle in our way.
03:42 - 03:46
So the next thing that comes to mind is following our own professional instincts.
03:46 - 03:52
So whether it's a counselor, um whether it's someone who is in therapeutic session.
03:52 - 03:59
Um whether it's a medical professional advocate, like a social worker, um, or
03:59 - 04:04
any any advocate that is working with a child or any
04:04 - 04:08
person who is working to treat a child or a family.
04:08 - 04:13
We have our own professional instincts, we have our own morals, our own code, um,
04:13 - 04:15
that defines us in who we are.
04:16 - 04:19
And so as we are becoming those professionals and as we
04:19 - 04:21
are following the standards following those
04:21 - 04:24
requirements and the things necessary,
04:24 - 04:26
we have things that come to mind
04:27 - 04:31
unique to our own thoughts and our own being
04:31 - 04:36
that is going to be set apart from other treatments, other advocates,
04:36 - 04:39
other people who are working with Children and families.
04:39 - 04:42
And so we want to follow these professional instincts.
04:42 - 04:46
We do want to think for ourselves to have our own unique
04:46 - 04:50
way of treating or advocating for a child or a family.
04:50 - 04:57
Um, but with these also comes a profound um obstacle in our way because for instance,
04:57 - 04:58
um
04:59 - 05:04
let's say, the client's best interest is to really um
05:05 - 05:10
really not engaged with us at all, he he or she doesn't want help.
05:10 - 05:14
Um, and this is the family that is coming to us, right. Um,
05:15 - 05:18
our own professional instincts are telling us, okay,
05:18 - 05:20
this is going to take a while to work with the child.
05:20 - 05:20
This is
05:21 - 05:23
I'm gonna take a lot of
05:24 - 05:26
things to work with and all that kind of stuff,
05:28 - 05:29
but
05:29 - 05:34
I also do think that in this particular setting, I can't take care of them.
05:34 - 05:38
And um this is our own instinct or professional instinct.
05:38 - 05:41
And so we may need to follow that,
05:41 - 05:46
but at the same time that might not be the best thing for this family.
05:46 - 05:49
This family may need more consistency and structure.
05:49 - 05:54
And so by referring them to a different counselor or advocate or whatever,
05:54 - 05:59
we may be destructive with those boundaries and with that obstacle.
06:02 - 06:04
So for the next piece that I'm going to be talking about,
06:04 - 06:07
we're going to be talking about ethical prevention.
06:07 - 06:12
How can we prevent these obstacles from even coming in place?
06:13 - 06:18
How can we still think about these things and still have that ethical code? Um
06:18 - 06:22
but have a prevention to where we don't need
06:23 - 06:26
the referral for instance to stuff like that.
06:27 - 06:28
So with prevention,
06:30 - 06:30
three,
06:31 - 06:32
three things
06:32 - 06:35
are really what comes to mind when
06:36 - 06:42
preventing those ethical obstacles, those ethical um mistakes, things like that.
06:42 - 06:42
And so
06:43 - 06:44
first we really do.
06:44 - 06:49
We need to consider following Children's rights and the protocol
06:50 - 06:54
that is set for um this setting that we are in.
06:54 - 06:57
So whether it's a medical, um whether it's a
06:58 - 07:01
professional or whatever it is,
07:01 - 07:05
we need to be considering and following those rights um
07:05 - 07:08
to prevent the child from your family from any harm.
07:08 - 07:12
And following that protocol, those protocols are in place.
07:12 - 07:15
Um not only to keep our Children and families safe,
07:15 - 07:19
but also to keep us professionals and workers safe as well.
07:19 - 07:23
So when we're following um the Children's rights and protocols,
07:23 - 07:26
we need to consider all of the things involved.
07:26 - 07:31
Um and so when looking at those, we also it's very,
07:31 - 07:34
very important to educate our clients
07:35 - 07:37
regularly about these things.
07:37 - 07:41
We need to educate them about their specific rights, their protocols, um,
07:41 - 07:44
things that are in place to keep them safe.
07:44 - 07:45
Um
07:45 - 07:51
not only does this help the client open up about these things and help the client um
07:51 - 07:52
have
07:53 - 07:54
uh
07:55 - 07:57
a willingness to move forward and progress.
07:57 - 08:00
Um and the things that they came to us for.
08:00 - 08:06
Um but educating about these will help them in future situations as well.
08:06 - 08:08
We want to set up our clients for the best success
08:08 - 08:12
and educating them on these things will help them with that.
08:15 - 08:19
And so with prevention comes application with thinking about those things.
08:19 - 08:24
Considering them following those protocols, the standards educating our client.
08:24 - 08:29
We need to apply those things into our advocacy into our treatment of our clients.
08:29 - 08:32
Um And so with application
08:32 - 08:33
um
08:33 - 08:37
I haven't finished this slide but with application we just need
08:37 - 08:40
to apply all the things that we talked about and prevention,
08:40 - 08:45
we need to go over the specifics, we need to consider cultural humility.
08:45 - 08:49
We need to consider things like hipaa our privacy regulations,
08:49 - 08:50
all those kind of things.
08:50 - 08:54
Um because when we apply those things and when we document them,
08:54 - 08:56
consult with our clients.
08:56 - 09:01
Um this is truly where the progression comes into our clients
09:04 - 09:04
mm.
09:04 - 09:09
And so with application next comes response.
09:10 - 09:13
And so in response. I haven't finished this side yet either.
09:13 - 09:14
But in response,
09:14 - 09:20
I'll be talking about just going over all the things that we already talked about,
09:20 - 09:25
Things that bring us back truly to the beginning of our sides,
09:25 - 09:27
the things that we learned.
09:27 - 09:31
And so the things that we learned how to advocate and
09:31 - 09:34
treat Children and families in a professional and ethical way.
09:34 - 09:38
Throughout all of these slides, we've been going over different situations,
09:38 - 09:43
different circumstances, but they are all intricately connected.
09:43 - 09:47
Um Everything is combined when we follow those protocols,
09:47 - 09:49
when we consider Children's rights,
09:50 - 09:50
um,
09:51 - 09:54
when we go over um our client's best interests,
09:54 - 09:57
our own personal instincts and ethics.
09:57 - 10:02
Um they really do connect together and this is how um we
10:02 - 10:05
advocate and treat Children and families in a professional and ethical way.
10:06 - 10:11
And so next in this response, I truly do want to be talking about
10:12 - 10:14
what it meant to be in this class.
10:14 - 10:19
And um not only the things that I've learned and how I'm going to apply it,
10:19 - 10:23
but why others should be educated in this thing in these things.
10:23 - 10:31
Um I truly do think that Children um they are the circle of our lives there.
10:31 - 10:35
The next generation. We need to be building them up. We need to be educating them
10:36 - 10:38
and especially in these ways we need to treat our
10:38 - 10:42
Children with care um in a professional and ethical way.
10:42 - 10:46
So others learning about this can be nothing but good. So
10:46 - 10:50
that's all I have for my presentation today. I hope that you guys
10:50 - 10:55
for Trevor lining. I hope that you enjoyed this. Um, again, this is my outline.
10:55 - 11:00
I haven't finished everything, um, but this is Children's Studies, Law and Ethics.
11:00 - 11:00
Thank you.
