00:01 - 00:04
Hello, everyone and welcome back to my pres
00:05 - 00:06
or welcome to my pres
00:07 - 00:08
um
00:09 - 00:10
presentation.
00:11 - 00:11
I
00:11 - 00:13
had to rerecord this because
00:14 - 00:17
um uh my technology did not work and there was no
00:17 - 00:20
volume but I have double check now and there is volume.
00:20 - 00:22
Hello, my name is Munzo
00:22 - 00:24
and I shown on the screen today.
00:25 - 00:28
I will be discussing the topic of depression,
00:28 - 00:30
trigger warning for people who may be affected
00:31 - 00:32
by the following categories,
00:32 - 00:36
suicide, death, loss, grief, and dark topics.
00:36 - 00:38
If you're still here, let's get started.
00:38 - 00:42
So if you look at the screen and follow the chain to the first topic,
00:42 - 00:43
you'll see
00:44 - 00:47
what the first category is. What exactly is depression,
00:47 - 00:51
which if you don't know what that is today, you're going to learn.
00:51 - 00:54
Now, moving on depression is classified
00:54 - 00:56
as a mood disorder.
00:58 - 01:04
W which is when your mood shifts from normal or happy to one feeling or emotion,
01:04 - 01:11
which is often sadness, anger, fear, or shock, main s signs that you
01:11 - 01:16
may be developing depression or feeling sad, mad, afraid,
01:16 - 01:18
and moody towards others.
01:18 - 01:22
Also by having loss of motivation and pleasure and hobbies,
01:22 - 01:24
difficult sleeping or not sleeping,
01:24 - 01:26
voices in your head,
01:26 - 01:29
demoting you and criticizing you thoughts of harming
01:29 - 01:32
your death and difficulty with doing simple tasks.
01:32 - 01:33
These are
01:34 - 01:37
the main ones that are noticeable to others and yourself.
01:37 - 01:42
Depression is not an illness but a mood disorder and has to be officially diag diag
01:43 - 01:46
diagnosed by a professional to access the
01:46 - 01:49
medication required to heal from depression.
01:49 - 01:51
Moving on to my next topic,
01:52 - 01:55
the basic symptoms and yes, it is what it sounds like.
01:55 - 01:57
People not some secret spell or magic.
01:58 - 02:01
There are 10 out of 14 symptoms which include
02:02 - 02:06
feelings of sadness and dark thoughts, low esteem about thyself,
02:06 - 02:09
weight gain or loss, sleep, sleep deprivation,
02:09 - 02:14
and sleeping too much loss of interest in life, sad mood, energy loss or fatigue,
02:14 - 02:16
self blame and suicidal thoughts.
02:16 - 02:22
The most common symptoms found in patients are sad feelings
02:22 - 02:26
and the least common found in patience is weight loss.
02:29 - 02:31
The main limitations that come with having
02:31 - 02:35
depression are sort sorted into five categories,
02:35 - 02:39
social activities, home life slash family relationships,
02:39 - 02:42
private activities and word or school motivation.
02:42 - 02:44
Symptoms can vary from each person
02:45 - 02:50
due to past experiences and moments, moments currently happening in their life.
02:50 - 02:52
I forgot to include that.
02:52 - 02:52
Um,
02:52 - 02:55
the amount of people that are most affected by depression is
02:55 - 02:58
over 60% out of 100 which is crazy to me.
02:58 - 03:02
At least you can have your own opinions but don't have the wrong one.
03:03 - 03:05
Connecting this to my next topic,
03:05 - 03:09
which is what age group suffers the most.
03:09 - 03:10
The
03:11 - 03:16
which is all about how the 60% of population varies from each age group.
03:16 - 03:19
The lowest age for depression is mid forties to fifties.
03:19 - 03:23
This is because the main group affected by depression is either started
03:23 - 03:28
in early adulthood or old age due to that being the lowest points of their life.
03:28 - 03:34
40 to 50 year olds often don't experience this due to already being an adult and fully
03:35 - 03:38
and aren't made to feel old as they're in their midlife.
03:40 - 03:45
The events that um cause early or late depression
03:45 - 03:47
can include adulthood,
03:48 - 03:49
unemployment,
03:50 - 03:51
unemployment
03:51 - 03:55
loss of loved ones, divorce, marriage problems
03:55 - 03:58
and economic or money issues.
04:00 - 04:02
However, in old age,
04:03 - 04:03
um
04:04 - 04:06
depression that causes or
04:07 - 04:09
what old age
04:09 - 04:10
suffers from
04:11 - 04:15
is losing physical future features, poor health and loneliness,
04:15 - 04:17
which can lead to depression.
04:18 - 04:21
The main causes for all age groups that lead to early
04:21 - 04:26
or late depression is mostly um puberty changes in life,
04:26 - 04:28
maturity or growing up
04:28 - 04:31
and starting a new path because depression
04:31 - 04:32
um
04:32 - 04:33
can
04:33 - 04:36
occur when something changes in our life and
04:36 - 04:38
it doesn't change for the better.
04:39 - 04:43
Moving on to my next topic, which is the relationship effect.
04:43 - 04:46
And what that basically means is how having depression can
04:46 - 04:50
and may have a restraint on relationships like family,
04:51 - 04:55
which includes siblings, cousins, parents, aunts, uncles and others,
04:55 - 04:59
and romantic relationships, boyfriend, girlfriend or just a significant other,
05:00 - 05:03
which can be avoided by not dating in high school.
05:03 - 05:07
However, if you're an adult, I don't care what you do, you do, you boo.
05:07 - 05:11
So to start up, there are two ways depression can affect a relationship.
05:11 - 05:14
There could be many strains on a relationship but how they,
05:14 - 05:16
they can also be strong
05:18 - 05:19
as
05:19 - 05:23
someone in the relationship, struggling from depression
05:23 - 05:25
may be more opened up and
05:25 - 05:27
um more emotional.
05:29 - 05:30
The main um
05:31 - 05:34
things depression does to a relationship are
05:34 - 05:38
um you're no longer doing activities you both used to like
05:38 - 05:41
due to uh depression being a main priority,
05:41 - 05:43
you experience self esteem issues that
05:43 - 05:46
negatively affect the relationship as mental
05:46 - 05:47
thoughts
05:48 - 05:49
overtake um
05:50 - 05:50
you
05:51 - 05:53
as a quote from the article from
05:54 - 05:55
Julia. Um
05:56 - 05:58
How does depression affect a romantic relationship?
05:58 - 06:02
Says some people with depression may also question whether their
06:02 - 06:05
partner truly wants to be with them and you isolate
06:06 - 06:07
and following that quote,
06:07 - 06:12
you isolate yourself more from your partner as depression
06:12 - 06:14
can feel you're alone even if you have someone
06:14 - 06:15
um
06:15 - 06:16
who loves you
06:17 - 06:21
because you may feel as a burden and the partner may have
06:21 - 06:25
no idea how to support the other partner or how they're feeling.
06:25 - 06:27
However, the main reason there's a strain on relationship
06:28 - 06:29
um is
06:31 - 06:34
um the person dealing with uh depression
06:35 - 06:36
has a lack of interest
06:36 - 06:41
or energy loss of passion and career choices and it um
06:42 - 06:47
uh lack of emotion or love, which is mainly needed for a relationship. A
06:47 - 06:51
main example of this happening in a real life situation
06:51 - 06:52
is
06:52 - 06:56
this circle which we call Ginny and Georgia
06:56 - 06:58
because we're talking about the most known
06:58 - 07:00
character that has depression in a show and
07:01 - 07:02
is in a relationship.
07:02 - 07:05
If he was in Miss Phillipos class, he would not be dating anyways.
07:05 - 07:07
But that's another day topic.
07:07 - 07:10
His name is Marcus Baker.
07:11 - 07:12
He's a dude.
07:12 - 07:13
Um
07:13 - 07:17
Marcus Baker is dating the main character Jenny,
07:19 - 07:20
the main character Jenny
07:21 - 07:24
um until they break up due to Marcus's depression
07:25 - 07:25
season two.
07:25 - 07:27
Episode five is when we truly see how
07:27 - 07:30
Marcus has started to develop and fall into depression
07:30 - 07:31
and describe it more
07:31 - 07:33
in the previous season.
07:33 - 07:35
The only time we see how he struggles with depression
07:35 - 07:37
is when he describes to Jenny how his best friend died
07:38 - 07:43
la uh last year because of cancer as done by research before using the source,
07:43 - 07:47
the TV show trauma and loss of others is the main reason
07:47 - 07:50
why people may fall into depression.
07:50 - 07:54
In episode five of season two of the show, it starts off with a monologue by Marcus
07:55 - 07:57
of him describing his depression,
07:59 - 08:02
which leads me to believe there are two types of depression,
08:02 - 08:03
short term and long term.
08:03 - 08:07
Marcus describes his as long term as he describes it,
08:07 - 08:11
something that hits you like a smell. One minute is there and one minute it's not.
08:11 - 08:14
And when you're in it, it's bad. All you can do is pretend
08:14 - 08:19
which um reveals how depression can be hidden with just smiling and acting happy,
08:19 - 08:22
which leads me to believe more that depression can also
08:22 - 08:26
be um hidden and not only expressed by sadness.
08:26 - 08:28
Also, he describes how valid people
08:29 - 08:30
saying I'm here.
08:30 - 08:34
I understand or useless as you never know what's going on in someone's head,
08:34 - 08:38
which just shows how depression even while in a relationship can make you
08:38 - 08:41
feel lonely as you wish they could help you feel less empty.
08:42 - 08:43
In another episode,
08:44 - 08:46
Marcus and Jenny break up,
08:48 - 08:50
she blames him for the breakup,
08:50 - 08:53
but he tries to explain how he didn't have space for her pain.
08:53 - 08:55
But as being in a relationship is more important to her,
08:55 - 08:58
she doesn't understand which just proves Marcus's point
08:59 - 09:01
as she does not really there for him. And
09:01 - 09:05
this shows how having depression and having a relationship at
09:05 - 09:08
the same time is not beneficial for both of them.
09:09 - 09:12
This may be just a show, but it's a simple way
09:12 - 09:15
to show how this may happen in the real world.
09:15 - 09:20
A dating, probably not the best idea for two words, heartbreak
09:21 - 09:27
or he cheated on me anyways. Now moving on to the next slide, how can I help?
09:27 - 09:29
And this is often the question you may ask
09:29 - 09:32
yourself when a loved one is going through depression.
09:32 - 09:33
So first,
09:33 - 09:36
there are three main steps that you can help identify if a loved one has depression,
09:36 - 09:39
if they seem to have a worsen mood than before they participate
09:39 - 09:43
in fewer family activities and just events in general involving others.
09:43 - 09:44
And they have to start
09:45 - 09:47
and they start to have more depressive
09:47 - 09:49
thinking and actions toward others or themselves.
09:50 - 09:55
After identifying the depression, you can move on to the three s's support,
09:55 - 09:55
share and safety.
09:56 - 09:57
Lots of ways to support someone
09:58 - 10:02
you believe that have depression are talking about your concern for them,
10:02 - 10:05
explaining thoughts on depression and how you think
10:05 - 10:07
and why you believe they might have it
10:08 - 10:12
remind them of your support and others providing,
10:12 - 10:16
provide medical resources other than just family members,
10:16 - 10:19
distract them with positive things, activities
10:19 - 10:20
and friends
10:20 - 10:25
and most importantly be patient as their actions and words towards you and
10:25 - 10:28
others can come from dealing with depression and such problems with mental health.
10:28 - 10:30
Now, the last
10:30 - 10:32
is not just for them, but for you
10:34 - 10:37
be careful not to lose your own mental health
10:37 - 10:38
as your own.
10:38 - 10:41
You may lose your own joy by trying to help people.
10:41 - 10:43
You may feel discouraged about not being able to help
10:43 - 10:47
someone but it doesn't help if you also become them.
10:47 - 10:51
Don't let yourself be manipulated but don't be manipulating people either. OK?
10:51 - 10:54
Right. At least in my opinion, hope that's not yours.
10:55 - 11:01
Hope that's yours. So yikes if not, I might need that category about therapy. Next.
11:01 - 11:02
Moving on
11:03 - 11:06
two main things that can help with depression are
11:06 - 11:11
help and medicine. Yahoo are manipulative. This is for you. Trust I got you.
11:12 - 11:15
And this is all the resources you can reach out for support. First.
11:15 - 11:17
Firstly, some free resources.
11:17 - 11:23
If you have a mobile phone, you can text 741741 or go to their
11:23 - 11:30
website crisis text line.org, which is a free 24 helpline as they believe.
11:30 - 11:31
And
11:32 - 11:36
one call can change your life as this is the foundation of their company.
11:36 - 11:39
Another resource that costs money is therapy.
11:39 - 11:44
It can be beneficial as you are less alone or feel less alone as another person
11:44 - 11:47
can help you go through the hardships without sacrificing
11:47 - 11:50
your health like they may do in a relationship.
11:51 - 11:54
And lastly, medication is another resource
11:54 - 11:58
and is most recommended but is not free. Antidepressants are the most common.
11:58 - 12:02
Um And the cost is determined by where you purchase
12:02 - 12:03
and
12:03 - 12:05
the insurance you have.
12:06 - 12:14
Now the next slide prices for help, which is all about how medicine and therapy cost,
12:14 - 12:16
how the counseling works.
12:16 - 12:20
The counselor will ask you how you feel and what is the root cause of your depression?
12:20 - 12:23
They will send you homework to help control depression and figure out what trig
12:24 - 12:27
triggers or triggered the initial
12:27 - 12:28
initial depression.
12:29 - 12:30
Um
12:30 - 12:33
They will try to help you and understand your experiences and
12:34 - 12:37
slowly help you overcome depression over months and times,
12:38 - 12:46
you can call 9726919570 to book a session in Dallas, Texas. Each ses
12:46 - 12:50
session is $150
12:50 - 12:55
not per person scheduling online. There is a 24 hour cancellation fee
12:55 - 12:56
in person appointments.
12:56 - 13:00
They are located at 6525 HZ
13:01 - 13:02
Horizon
13:02 - 13:03
Horizon
13:04 - 13:04
roads
13:04 - 13:06
suite. Um,
13:06 - 13:10
130 Rockwall Texas, 75032.
13:10 - 13:15
You must go to at least one in person appointment to set up an online personal plan.
13:16 - 13:18
And medicine prices vary,
13:18 - 13:19
but the lowest is
13:20 - 13:24
uh PROzac only $5 per dosage.
13:24 - 13:27
And with insurance, it is the most affordable.
13:27 - 13:30
It treats depression, O CD, eating disorders and panic attacks.
13:30 - 13:32
However, the most effective medicine
13:32 - 13:34
that is not insured is
13:35 - 13:35
Wardo
13:36 - 13:39
XTW, which is about
13:39 - 13:42
$477 per doses.
13:43 - 13:45
It is unpopular mainly because of the price,
13:45 - 13:47
which definitely makes sense unless you're rich.
13:47 - 13:48
I wouldn't recommend
13:49 - 13:51
there are much cheaper options that are insured
13:52 - 13:53
as shown on the screen
13:55 - 13:56
as shown
13:57 - 13:57
um
13:58 - 13:59
online, I
13:59 - 14:00
meant
14:00 - 14:01
um
14:01 - 14:02
moving on
14:03 - 14:05
the last category is art therapy.
14:05 - 14:09
Art therapy is something you could do on your own that will help with depression.
14:09 - 14:10
Um
14:10 - 14:13
Types of art therapy are paintings, drawing, dance,
14:13 - 14:16
song and much more people often discover how to explore
14:16 - 14:18
their feelings and gain a deeper understanding of their depression.
14:19 - 14:22
A quote that most people who are going through art therapy, say art, the
14:23 - 14:25
art became my voice when words failed me,
14:25 - 14:28
which just shows how art therapy can help people who struggle with.
14:29 - 14:29
Uh
14:30 - 14:34
speaking about their depression, art therapy is still in the
14:34 - 14:36
experimental phase and it's not
14:36 - 14:37
a complete remedy but
14:38 - 14:41
is effective for both. Oops, I lied. Um
14:41 - 14:46
My sources is my last circle. Here are all my sources. I have about 10 of them on there.
14:46 - 14:48
