00:01 - 00:01
Hello, everyone.
00:02 - 00:03
My name is Alice Brennan.
00:04 - 00:06
I'm a 19 year old white woman, and I come
00:06 - 00:08
from a small town of about 8000 people in southwestern
00:09 - 00:10
Ontario called The Stool.
00:11 - 00:12
This is the community I'll be focusing on today.
00:17 - 00:18
I grew up very sheltered from diversity.
00:20 - 00:22
Everyone enlisted well, looked like me, talked like me and
00:22 - 00:23
dressed like me.
00:24 - 00:27
Our community events were often centered around agriculture, which drew
00:27 - 00:28
in a crowd of farmers from surrounding areas.
00:29 - 00:30
We almost never celebrate diversity.
00:32 - 00:34
It wasn't until coming to Queens in Kingston in general
00:34 - 00:37
that I had heard a land acknowledgment my high school
00:37 - 00:37
never gave them.
00:38 - 00:40
And nor did my elementary school or anywhere in my
00:40 - 00:41
small town for that fact.
00:44 - 00:46
After doing some research of my own, I learned that
00:46 - 00:48
the stool is situated on on the Shanab land.
00:48 - 00:51
But I can tell you, from firsthand experience living in
00:51 - 00:53
this town my entire life, there has been no recognition
00:53 - 00:54
of that in any way, shape or form.
00:57 - 01:04
Yeah, it wasn't until eighth grade that I learned her
01:04 - 01:06
understood anything about indigenous peoples.
01:07 - 01:09
In eighth grade, my teacher invited a local indigenous man
01:10 - 01:10
named Christian Dennis.
01:11 - 01:13
He came into our classroom to speak about his culture,
01:14 - 01:16
his artwork in his survival of the sixties scoop.
01:17 - 01:17
He's a local artist.
01:18 - 01:20
This day still stands to be one of my favorite
01:20 - 01:21
memories from elementary school.
01:25 - 01:27
I came to learn that Christian is an outstanding community
01:27 - 01:29
member and was involved in a number of ways.
01:46 - 01:49
Up until very recently, everything I knew about indigenous culture
01:49 - 01:50
had come from Christian.
01:51 - 01:53
He was the person that told me everything I knew
01:53 - 01:55
he had done interviews with local news stations.
01:55 - 01:58
But his experience surviving the sixties scoop and growing up
01:58 - 02:04
as a racialized citizen in a very white town here
02:04 - 02:06
have included one of the many interviews Christian has done
02:07 - 02:08
about the sixties scoop in growing up as an indigenous
02:09 - 02:10
man in a small town.
