00:01 - 00:05
Hi, everyone. My name is Owen Strasser. I'm one of the pastors here at Malo
00:06 - 00:06
O and
00:06 - 00:06
Malo
00:06 - 00:08
O in Hawaiian means presence.
00:08 - 00:10
We believe in the presence of God and being present
00:10 - 00:14
with one another and present in the community around us.
00:14 - 00:18
Um We are going to be starting our Advent Series in 2023
00:18 - 00:22
this week and it's been something that we've actually never done before.
00:22 - 00:23
Uh in the Life of Macho
00:24 - 00:29
is to do a proper Sunday Advent uh series
00:29 - 00:31
uh according to the election.
00:32 - 00:35
Uh And first up this week is on the Hope Candle,
00:36 - 00:41
uh next week will be on the love candle where we're going to be gathering in person
00:41 - 00:46
um at Grace and Growlers for our annual Christmas communion on tap.
00:46 - 00:47
Um
00:47 - 00:51
uh The following week will be the Joy Candle
00:51 - 00:57
and then the last week will be on Christmas Eve will be on the Peace Candle.
00:57 - 01:00
But today, we're going to be focusing on the Hope Candle.
01:00 - 01:03
And traditionally actually, uh the hope candle
01:03 - 01:09
was originally about the candle of prophecy or prophecy.
01:10 - 01:14
And in order for us to sort of understand what that might be like,
01:14 - 01:18
uh I invite us to look at Ezekiel 37 in
01:18 - 01:23
Ezekiel 37. Ezekiel is a prophet of God. It's, it's during
01:23 - 01:23
um
01:24 - 01:30
when it feels like all hope is lost in the people of Israel. And uh chapter 37
01:30 - 01:33
uh starts out with the hand of the Lord was on me.
01:33 - 01:36
Uh Ezekiel speaking and he brought me out by the spirit of
01:36 - 01:39
the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley.
01:39 - 01:41
It was full of bones.
01:41 - 01:44
He led me back and forth among them.
01:44 - 01:48
And I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley. Bones that were very dry.
01:49 - 01:53
And the Lord asked me, son of man, can these bones live?
01:54 - 01:57
I said, sovereign Lord, you alone know.
01:57 - 01:58
Then he said to me prophesy
01:59 - 02:04
to these bones and say to them dry bones. Hear the word of the Lord.
02:04 - 02:07
This is what the sovereign Lord says to these bones.
02:07 - 02:11
I will make breath enter you and you will come to life.
02:11 - 02:16
I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin.
02:16 - 02:21
I will put breath in you and you will come to life. Then you will know that I
02:21 - 02:23
am the Lord.
02:25 - 02:31
You see. Ezekiel 37 is all about what happens when the breath of God
02:31 - 02:33
comes to us.
02:33 - 02:38
But it's not just that it's what happens when God compels us
02:38 - 02:43
the life and truth and beauty of God compels us to prophesy
02:43 - 02:46
to dead things. To things that are dying around us,
02:47 - 02:48
prophesy
02:48 - 02:56
into them, that they will come to life because God is near us because God is with us.
02:56 - 02:58
And because God tells us prophesy
02:58 - 03:03
to these dead things, these dead places that they will come to life.
03:04 - 03:09
And when we think about Ezekiel 37 doesn't it remind us so much
03:09 - 03:12
about, uh, the Christmas story?
03:12 - 03:18
Doesn't it remind us so much about how, uh, the hope of the whole world,
03:18 - 03:24
the light of the whole world came as a baby into a dark place,
03:24 - 03:28
into a place that feels like death into broken places
03:28 - 03:33
and, and breathes new life into all of us.
03:34 - 03:38
For many of us, Ezekiel's reality is not too different from our own.
03:39 - 03:41
Most of the time we can see in ourselves
03:41 - 03:44
and in our communities that are plagued by injustice,
03:45 - 03:48
forcing us to reckon with the destruction of life,
03:48 - 03:51
whether it's under some sort of oppression, some sort of lie,
03:51 - 03:55
some sort of a part about this broken world that grips
03:55 - 03:55
us.
03:55 - 03:57
And when you add the loss of surrounding what
03:57 - 04:00
we have all gone through from the pandemic.
04:00 - 04:03
And now here in Hawaii, the collective loss that we've been experienced
04:04 - 04:06
through, through the fires in Maui,
04:06 - 04:09
we realize that the dry bones Ezekiel saw
04:09 - 04:11
are all around us too
04:11 - 04:15
yet. God still call us, compels us
04:16 - 04:20
to be called and reaffirm our commitment to our communities.
04:20 - 04:25
And it drives us to hear God say, can these dry bones live
04:26 - 04:27
and he compels us to prophesy
04:28 - 04:33
to them, that the bones will live because God is with us.
04:33 - 04:36
Because God breathes new life in us.
04:38 - 04:44
In Ezekiel 37 6, he says, behold, I will cause breath to enter you and you will live.
04:45 - 04:50
I will lay sinews upon you and will cause flesh to come upon you and cover you with
04:50 - 04:57
skin and put breath in you and you shall live and you shall know that I am the Lord
04:58 - 05:03
God's response to our prophesying to dead things is
05:03 - 05:06
that he will breathe new life into them.
05:07 - 05:10
So invite us to in this week of advent,
05:10 - 05:13
this first Sunday in advent to kind of think through
05:13 - 05:17
what looks and feels dead in you or in your community
05:17 - 05:18
right now.
05:24 - 05:28
And maybe to also consider where do you hope for renewed life,
05:28 - 05:33
a new breath of life in you or a new breath of life in your community?
05:40 - 05:46
We'll close with a breath or a breathing prayer where we inhale
05:46 - 05:51
a words together and then we exhale a words together. But before that,
05:51 - 05:55
let us remember that the God of the universe who would so
05:55 - 05:59
graciously meet us in the depths of our valleys of dry bones.
05:59 - 06:03
He gives us courage to prophesy to death around us,
06:03 - 06:06
to the dead things and dead places around us when
06:06 - 06:09
it doesn't make sense or it doesn't look promising.
06:09 - 06:11
Let us listen for God's voice
06:12 - 06:17
when he whispers, can these dead things. Can these dry bones live?
06:17 - 06:22
Can we embody Christ and let him breathe new life into us,
06:22 - 06:25
into the communities around us so that we can
06:25 - 06:28
continue a good work of incarnation in us,
06:28 - 06:33
in our families, in our workplaces, in our neighborhoods, in our friendships,
06:33 - 06:34
in our communities.
06:34 - 06:37
Let us see and pray for the possibilities of renewed life
06:37 - 06:42
in our communities so that God's kingdom may draw near.
06:44 - 06:46
So we pray with me as we inhale.
06:46 - 06:53
Lord breathe new life into me, my community and our world.
06:59 - 07:05
And let's exhale together, Lord revive the dry bones in me,
07:05 - 07:07
in my community and in our world.
07:13 - 07:14
Amen.
