00:00 - 00:03
Hi, My name is Jordan, and welcome to my presentation
00:04 - 00:08
on authoritarianism specifically in China and how the government rules
00:08 - 00:10
it's people to start off.
00:11 - 00:13
Let's talk about facial recognition.
00:14 - 00:18
We all know that here facial recognition is primarily used
00:18 - 00:19
just to unlock your phone.
00:20 - 00:23
But in China it's being used for bank transactions, checking
00:24 - 00:27
into the airport, paying for goods, all using just your
00:28 - 00:33
face. About 570 million of the surveillance cameras are being
00:33 - 00:36
placed around the city to analyze the Chinese citizens everyday
00:36 - 00:39
moves. The government says it's to create a safer and
00:39 - 00:42
healthier city for pros.
00:43 - 00:45
For one, it's to prevent stealing.
00:46 - 00:48
For example, every shore you go into, you first have
00:48 - 00:49
to check in.
00:49 - 00:51
You see your face that way, something is stolen.
00:52 - 00:54
People no, who's been in the store and at what
00:55 - 00:59
times. It's also for improved security, say a suspect is
00:59 - 01:00
on the loose in the city.
01:01 - 01:04
The facial recognition is looking at every single person who
01:05 - 01:05
looks like that suspect.
01:06 - 01:07
That way, they confined where they are sooner.
01:09 - 01:12
It's also supposed to be safer for citizens, for example,
01:13 - 01:17
in trucks, facial recognition cameras are being placed in front
01:18 - 01:21
of the drivers and if they show any signs of
01:21 - 01:23
tiredness or being worn out, they're going to get a
01:23 - 01:25
call that says, Take a rest before you keep driving
01:26 - 01:27
just to be safe.
01:28 - 01:30
Yeah, this is what it looks like from the cameras
01:30 - 01:33
point of view, tracking every single person and looking at
01:33 - 01:33
their faces.
01:35 - 01:37
Next, let's talk about the cons.
01:38 - 01:41
For one, the citizens have no privacy.
01:42 - 01:46
Your everyday move is being tracked, and you're only going
01:46 - 01:48
to do what the government wants you to dio.
01:49 - 01:53
It's also used to attract minority groups and place them
01:53 - 01:56
in concentration camps where they are tortured and killed, which
01:57 - 01:57
is absolutely horrible.
01:58 - 02:00
And it's also used for shaming.
02:01 - 02:03
Say you jaywalk one day just because you need to
02:03 - 02:07
get somewhere, you are gonna be placed on a billboard
02:08 - 02:10
because the cameras are going to catch you and you
02:10 - 02:11
are going to be labeled as a violator.
02:14 - 02:20
So let's see how this rose China again.
02:20 - 02:21
It's tracking everything people do.
02:22 - 02:24
You're not going to do something wrong, because if you
02:24 - 02:28
do, it's caught on camera and the government isn't gonna
02:28 - 02:28
like you.
02:30 - 02:33
It's shaming people into doing the right thing.
02:33 - 02:35
It's no longer your choice to the right thing.
02:35 - 02:40
It's because if you don't you're being shamed so morally.
02:41 - 02:44
I definitely think this is wrong, very detrimental to the
02:44 - 02:48
citizens. You are basically not free anymore to do what
02:48 - 02:51
you want, because the government is looking at you all
02:51 - 02:55
day. But from the Chinese government's point of view, it's
02:55 - 02:59
definitely a smart move, keeping them in check, doing on
02:59 - 03:00
Lee what they want them to be doing.
03:02 - 03:06
Now let's take a look at the social credit score.
03:07 - 03:10
It's basically a score citizens are given based on their
03:10 - 03:11
habits and behavior.
03:12 - 03:14
So whatever you dio is either going to negatively or
03:15 - 03:16
positively affect your score.
03:17 - 03:19
It's a score from 3 52 9 50.
03:20 - 03:22
These are some girls showing their score on their phones,
03:24 - 03:27
and your score is docked for everyday things like littering,
03:28 - 03:30
Messi, yards and gossiping.
03:31 - 03:33
Let's talk about now the pros.
03:36 - 03:40
So again, this pushes people, be better citizens, you want
03:40 - 03:42
good score, so you're not gonna have a messy yard,
03:42 - 03:44
and you're not going to gossip because you want that
03:44 - 03:47
score to go up because that means we're gonna have
03:48 - 03:50
discounts, better interest rates, travel deals.
03:51 - 03:53
The government is going to reward you with cheap plane
03:54 - 03:57
tickets and discounts on things like bike rentals and food.
03:58 - 04:01
Um, jobs are also being given to people to report
04:02 - 04:04
others in the community for good things and bad things.
04:05 - 04:08
And the good people who are reported are placed on
04:08 - 04:11
signs to show how good of citizens they are.
04:13 - 04:15
But of course there are cons.
04:16 - 04:18
People are being publicly shamed.
04:20 - 04:22
If you have a messy yard, you might be going
04:22 - 04:24
to look at the news and they're your yard is
04:25 - 04:28
with your face on the local news for everybody to
04:28 - 04:31
see. A bad score is going to give you slow
04:31 - 04:33
Internet. You can't get your work done.
04:33 - 04:35
If you have a bad score, your kids are going
04:35 - 04:38
to be banned from the best schools, and you're not
04:39 - 04:41
going to get good jobs because nobody wants someone with
04:41 - 04:42
a bad score to work for them.
04:43 - 04:45
The government is also going to place you on their
04:46 - 04:48
black list, so those cameras around the city are going
04:48 - 04:51
to be watching you specifically every single day.
04:54 - 04:57
Now let's see how this roles China.
04:59 - 05:02
So of course, if you buy clothes or food the
05:02 - 05:05
necessities, you're gonna have a good score because that's what
05:05 - 05:06
the government wants you to buy.
05:07 - 05:10
But if you're flying a lot of alcohol or too
05:10 - 05:13
much entertainment such as video games, you're gonna have a
05:13 - 05:16
bad score because those are seen as bad things.
05:17 - 05:20
So for society again, this is very bad.
05:20 - 05:24
It definitely reminds me of the episode of Black Mirror,
05:24 - 05:26
where she literally goes insane.
05:27 - 05:30
I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese citizens did to
05:30 - 05:34
sooner or later, but from the government's point of view
05:34 - 05:36
again, it is very smart.
05:37 - 05:43
They're keeping their citizens income in their control, so thank
05:43 - 05:44
you for watching my presentation.
