00:01 - 00:04
the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself
00:05 - 00:05
in the service of others.
00:06 - 00:10
Gandhi can you imagine a world where people only thought
00:10 - 00:14
of themselves and never donated or volunteered no soup kitchens,
00:15 - 00:19
homelessness at an all time high Children are starving in
00:19 - 00:22
a world full of selfishness if we cannot try to
00:22 - 00:25
rally together to see the greater good and realize that
00:25 - 00:28
helping others is helping ourselves and our world.
00:30 - 00:33
I'm qualified to talk about this because I did my
00:33 - 00:38
research on this certain foundation and I'm a strong advocate
00:38 - 00:41
and helping others and giving more of yourself to others.
00:42 - 00:45
I volunteered at numerous events and helped my husband and
00:46 - 00:47
a few of his as well.
00:48 - 00:51
I believe everyone should be invested in volunteering and raising
00:51 - 00:55
the next generation to care about others without it, I
00:55 - 00:59
fear for humanity and the exist um existence of human
00:59 - 01:02
beings. Today, I will be talking about the decline in
01:02 - 01:05
volunteering and the amazing work that a certain foundation does
01:06 - 01:08
and why I think this is how we can combat
01:09 - 01:10
egotism and greed in our world.
01:12 - 01:15
To begin, I'd like to talk about some of the
01:15 - 01:17
concerns our world is dealing with in regard to volunteering
01:18 - 01:19
in its decline over the years.
01:20 - 01:24
Oh, okay.
01:25 - 01:26
There are many ways to volunteer yet.
01:27 - 01:29
There is a decline in volunteering over the last few
01:29 - 01:35
years. As seen in this chart, according to the Bureau
01:35 - 01:36
of Labor Statistics website.
01:37 - 01:40
Shortly after the 9 11 terrorist attacks, the United States
01:41 - 01:46
reached a historic peak of 28.8% From 2003 to 2005,
01:47 - 01:51
2006. It suffered its first significant decline, dropping to 26.7%.
01:53 - 01:56
And after that it maintained its volunteer rate until 2015.
01:58 - 02:04
The volunteer rate has since declined As it is 24.9%.
02:06 - 02:08
According to the do Good Institute site.
02:09 - 02:12
There are more than 1.8 million active non profits in
02:13 - 02:13
the US.
02:13 - 02:17
alone. So it's not like there is an options while
02:18 - 02:22
volunteering has declined online, terrible giving has been consistent for
02:22 - 02:29
year over year growth fewer americans are engaging in their
02:29 - 02:33
community by volunteering and giving than at any time in
02:33 - 02:33
the recent past.
02:34 - 02:38
According to the University of Maryland website, The most common
02:38 - 02:42
barrier for people not volunteering is lack of free time
02:42 - 02:46
not being interested in the volunteer role or nobody asking
02:47 - 02:48
that person to volunteer.
02:49 - 02:53
Yeah. After all these facts have been thrown at you.
02:53 - 02:55
I would like to discuss how we can solve these
02:55 - 03:01
concerns. Now.
03:01 - 03:04
The most obvious thing would be, let's get people to
03:04 - 03:07
volunteer. But if it were that easy, the national average
03:07 - 03:07
wouldn't be 26%.
03:09 - 03:09
According to the statistics.
03:10 - 03:15
I the Travis Manion Foundation has multiple programs to entice
03:15 - 03:17
people to help their fellow neighbors out.
03:17 - 03:20
One of the biggest obstacles is getting people to care
03:20 - 03:22
about something enough to want to help out.
03:23 - 03:27
$2.5 billion American charities for military.
03:31 - 03:35
The Travis Manion Foundation website says that it prides itself
03:36 - 03:40
on empowering individuals to unite their communities through development programmes,
03:40 - 03:44
training and events designed to empower veterans and families of
03:44 - 03:47
the fallen to pass their values on to the next
03:47 - 03:49
generation and the community at large.
03:50 - 03:54
The Travis Manion Foundation report says 84% of its members
03:55 - 04:00
who participate in Travis Manion Foundation initiatives agreed that the
04:00 - 04:03
charity has provided them with a sense of community Due
04:04 - 04:05
to their initiative and outreach.
04:05 - 04:09
Travis Manion Foundation has reached over 60,000 people by their
04:09 - 04:13
9-11 heroes run and have helped over 115,000 people in
04:13 - 04:19
2020. Their core value beliefs are be accountable, purpose begins
04:20 - 04:23
with passion fueled by it, gratitude and treat everyone with
04:24 - 04:25
respect. Mhm.
04:27 - 04:30
The Travis Manion Foundation has multiple ways to volunteer and
04:31 - 04:35
outreach, from 5Ks to outreach programs to veterans as well
04:35 - 04:36
as the youth in school.
04:36 - 04:41
Their motto is, if not me, then who and the
04:41 - 04:45
Travis Manion website, Character does matter, mentors develop character and
04:45 - 04:48
leadership skills and young adults ground and evidence based field
04:49 - 04:50
of positive psychology.
04:50 - 04:56
They use a strength, strengths based program of positive psychology,
04:58 - 05:01
an approach to develop character traits in the next generation
05:02 - 05:06
through a combination of informal discussions and activity based learning,
05:09 - 05:13
the character doesn't matter program builds relationships with young adults,
05:13 - 05:17
helping them build character and leadership with team building, exercise
05:17 - 05:20
and learning challenges as well as participate in a service
05:21 - 05:22
project to honor the fallen.
05:24 - 05:26
Imagine if people in your neighborhood decided to honor the
05:26 - 05:29
fallen soldiers and military by taking this motto into their
05:30 - 05:32
everyday life, what would that look like for future generations?
05:36 - 05:38
If you cannot see the value in trying to make
05:38 - 05:41
our communities better and honor the fallen, I fear the
05:41 - 05:44
discord and egotism will continue to fester and pull us
05:44 - 05:48
apart as a country, 55% of our veterans feel a
05:48 - 05:51
disconnect from civilian life and more than one in three
05:52 - 05:55
young people, which is over 16 million adults have never
05:56 - 05:58
had a positive role model or mentor in their life.
06:00 - 06:02
Now that we have a better idea about what Travis
06:03 - 06:05
Manion Foundation is, let's talk about how you can get
06:05 - 06:14
involved. You can check out the Travis Manion Foundation page
06:17 - 06:20
And look more in depth that the programs I discussed
06:20 - 06:23
earlier, there is a place to donate Travis Manion Foundation
06:24 - 06:27
where 90% of their proceeds go to the character does
06:27 - 06:31
matter Pro as well as the veterans and families who
06:31 - 06:31
need it.
06:32 - 06:33
The last thing you can do is trying to be
06:33 - 06:36
an ambassador for Travis Manion Foundation and be the change
06:37 - 06:40
you want to see in the world now that we
06:40 - 06:43
know how we can connect with our community to support
06:43 - 06:43
our cause.
06:44 - 06:47
Let's bring us to a close, Even though the volunteer
06:47 - 06:51
rate has slowly been declining since 2006 due to people
06:51 - 06:55
being uninterested in volunteer roles as well as a lack
06:55 - 06:55
of free time.
06:57 - 07:00
The biggest obstacle is getting people to volunteer to get
07:00 - 07:04
people to care and put enough motion into action, as
07:04 - 07:06
well as the knowledge of where to start for volunteering.
07:08 - 07:10
If we cannot rally together for the greater good and
07:10 - 07:13
help bring mentorship to young adults to do better by
07:13 - 07:14
their community.
07:14 - 07:17
Our fear that our world will be consumed with selfishness.
07:18 - 07:22
A quote by William James Act is of what you
07:22 - 07:23
do makes a difference.
07:24 - 07:24
It does
