00:02 - 00:06
Hey guys I'm Taylor Livingston and I'm your professional development
00:06 - 00:12
coordinator uh for the subject literacy in all content areas.
00:14 - 00:17
So we're gonna split this up into three sections.
00:17 - 00:21
Today we're gonna talk about what's the point then?
00:21 - 00:27
We're gonna get into knowing your impact as a teacher and then what's next,
00:27 - 00:30
what is your next steps that you could take?
00:33 - 00:37
So we're gonna start with, what's the point?
00:37 - 00:43
So I always like to start with a small question. So here's my question to you,
00:43 - 00:50
how many of you have said I don't teach L. A. So it's not my problem.
00:51 - 00:54
I'm so guilty as well.
00:54 - 00:55
I have totally said this before,
00:55 - 01:01
I teach math science and social studies so I've heard it, I've said it,
01:01 - 01:03
I completely understand where you're coming from
01:06 - 01:11
in reading this incredible book. Learning that last by Ron Berger.
01:12 - 01:18
I had one really good quote that stuck with me. Um It talked about a teacher.
01:18 - 01:21
Peter Hill was talking to his friend and
01:21 - 01:28
His friends a scientist and stated my job is 10% experimenting 40%
01:28 - 01:35
writing and 50% reading and I went whoa a scientist job,
01:35 - 01:38
I have never even thought of it like that.
01:38 - 01:42
Um so one of my girlfriends, she's actually a chemistry
01:43 - 01:44
Um she was a chemistry major,
01:44 - 01:49
she's a chemist now and so I asked her about this and she's like I completely
01:49 - 01:57
agree most of the time I am reading and writing guys that is 90% of their career
01:58 - 01:59
90%.
02:00 - 02:04
So here are here's my next question to you who have
02:04 - 02:08
different subject areas that aren't reading and writing in L.
02:08 - 02:09
A.
02:10 - 02:12
How satisfied are you
02:13 - 02:16
on your students reading and writing in your
02:16 - 02:18
content area on the assignments you give.
02:25 - 02:31
Yeah I completely had that concept to, yep not too great.
02:31 - 02:35
So know your impact and what is your impact?
02:35 - 02:41
You can choose, that is your impact. You get to choose the cool text.
02:41 - 02:42
Now, what does that mean?
02:42 - 02:45
Instead of using the boring old book all the time,
02:45 - 02:48
which we know the book has incredible things and resources,
02:48 - 02:50
you can use primary sources.
02:50 - 02:52
Um This is gonna bring an engagement
02:52 - 02:56
and deepen students learning through vocabulary.
02:56 - 02:59
They're gonna learn vocabulary that maybe they haven't learned before.
02:59 - 03:04
Um They're gonna see different tech structures and different textiles.
03:05 - 03:11
I always like to say if it's boring to you it's probably boring to them,
03:11 - 03:12
they're a lot younger than you.
03:12 - 03:17
So if it's a boring to our adult minds it's not gonna be fun to their student minds.
03:18 - 03:22
So you're gonna like this as a teacher in my what's next?
03:22 - 03:25
You're doing too much and I know we don't usually hear
03:25 - 03:28
that we usually you're like oh we're not doing enough,
03:28 - 03:29
we're not doing enough.
03:29 - 03:34
No you are doing too much now, you might be like you're crazy,
03:34 - 03:36
what are you saying about that?
03:36 - 03:39
What I'm saying is you need to incorporate student
03:39 - 03:45
led learning connect your standards to the student lives
03:46 - 03:48
that's gonna engage and inspire,
03:50 - 03:55
teach them that Reading and writing curriculum can improve lives.
03:56 - 03:58
Teach your students to persevere.
03:58 - 04:00
We might not be good the first time,
04:00 - 04:04
especially if we're um digging deep and analyzing text.
04:04 - 04:10
It's gonna take practice. Tell your students your you might fail
04:10 - 04:12
but that's okay. Don't give up.
04:13 - 04:19
You also need to create a culture of validation, a safe place for these students.
04:22 - 04:27
So really what's next as a school you need to come together for instance,
04:27 - 04:30
editing corporation,
04:30 - 04:34
maybe you have fifth graders that could edit 1/4 grade writing,
04:35 - 04:37
it's all holding them accountable for their
04:37 - 04:41
peers and themselves practice practice practice.
04:41 - 04:43
Students aren't gonna be able to go into your
04:43 - 04:47
content area and be able to um analyze the text
04:47 - 04:50
at first it's gonna take you taking out sections of
04:50 - 04:56
a text and having students practice through text dependent questions
04:56 - 05:00
that you're creating through the text. Um
05:00 - 05:04
this is going to help them grapple which what that means is they
05:04 - 05:08
can get the gist of the text and understand the meaning first.
05:08 - 05:10
They're gonna have to do that
05:11 - 05:13
next you can grow background knowledge through
05:13 - 05:17
experiments before them deepening their text,
05:17 - 05:19
deepening and reading their text.
05:20 - 05:22
You have got a creative purpose.
05:22 - 05:28
Um for instance I just want to pull in my um own example.
05:28 - 05:33
So we've been learning a lot about pollution and how it's affecting us.
05:33 - 05:36
So I left my kids with a time around um
05:36 - 05:40
around Robin which is like a timeshare around their table
05:40 - 05:41
and I asked them this,
05:41 - 05:47
how can our learning of pollution help you become better citizens guys?
05:47 - 05:49
I got incredible answers and it deepened their
05:49 - 05:52
text through the literacy they read about.
