  1. values when we cannot see uh my name is Andre Cohen
  2. and say thank you so much for joining us in this conversation
  3. and uh we're gonna talk a little bit about how we
  4. can use our organizational values or not not how we can,
  5. but ways that we should be using our
  6. organizational values to help us increase our effectiveness,
  7. both in our team and as individuals.
  8. And so um
  9. the first thing that values do for us is they give us courage and so I want
  10. to tell a story about a bridge collapse that happened here in the in the twin cities.
  11. And so back in 2007,
  12. part of the Mississippi part of a 35 w bridge fell into the
  13. Mississippi River and a number of things occurred as that was happening.
  14. One was that there was a busload of Children that was kind of teetering on the edge of
  15. this bridge and then there were people who were
  16. safely in their cars waiting for rescuers to come.
  17. There had been cars that fell into the Mississippi, there were um
  18. other people who chose to move from the safety of their own
  19. cars towards this bus to save Children that they did not know.
  20. And so one of the things that we,
  21. one of the questions that one should ask is
  22. what was it that compelled folks to leave the
  23. safety of their own cars to go help these Children that they did not know and you know,
  24. I will let you know that the majority of those people who did that were not trained E.
  25. M. T. S.
  26. They didn't have the proper equipment or training that
  27. would prepare them for such an event like this,
  28. But they did have values that said I must go and help these Children.
  29. And so when we think about this notion of of values
  30. we we we appreciate the values because they give us courage,
  31. even when we don't know what to do, they help us to understand what we can do.
  32. And the values also give us clarity.
  33. I think it's important to recognize that
  34. we're all after safety significance of belonging.
  35. What those things mean?
  36. How we get those the methods that we use may be very different but we're
  37. all after very similar things but it is our methods that oftentimes get us confused.
  38. And so when we're clear about our values,
  39. our values provide for us the sense of clarity,
  40. we get clarity when we understand that we share these common values,
  41. we also recognize that the values give us direction.
  42. Should I be proactive or should I be reactive?
  43. And so when we think about this notion of being um proactive,
  44. we operate from our sphere of influence.
  45. Are are the things that we can do.
  46. And so when we think about our circle of control that is we how
  47. we move out we move proactively into the world where we can't uh typically recognize
  48. that we can't let those things drive our behaviors that we're moving from
  49. our circle of control or circle of influence out into the world,
  50. reactive people,
  51. let the world outside of them impact how they are
  52. uh inside and so what we know is that our
  53. our values give us a direction in which to act
  54. a way in which to interact with the world.
  55. We also recognize that uh that our values give us perspective, right?
  56. And so I love using this this dinosaur as I talk about the this particular concept,
  57. because we know that the dinosaur no longer exists because the context changed,
  58. right?
  59. And so he could not adapt to the change in the context. And so he went extinct.
  60. But what we also must recognize is that many of
  61. our our team members are co workers and even ourselves,
  62. we are operating based on a context and
  63. that that context has provided many of us divergent
  64. or different perspectives on things that sometimes should be
  65. pretty um Prima facie this in your face,
  66. right?
  67. Like like respect.
  68. So there are lots of different ways that we can talk about respect,
  69. but in our organization or show respect or get respect.
  70. But in our organizations we have to recognize that is our values
  71. that give us a direction in terms of our perspective on things.
  72. Next is that um our our values give us a responsibility,
  73. We have things that we we have to be responsible for in terms of
  74. making sure that these values and the mission of the organization move forward.
  75. And so when we think about this notion of
  76. the golden rule,
  77. the responsibility is that I treat the way I treat people the way I want to be treated.
  78. But oftentimes our values,
  79. our organizational values require for us to start there but to graduate to the next
  80. level of the platinum rule which is treat others how they want to be treated,
  81. which means that I have to have a relationship with those with those
  82. folks because they will then tell me how they want to be treated.
  83. I have to understand have conversations.
  84. So I now have a responsibility to engage others with these
  85. with the values in ways that lead us to effectiveness.
  86. And lastly,
  87. what are values present to us is the gift of
  88. humility wreck a recognizing that it's not about me,
  89. it's not about the thing per se, but it is about how our values get lived every day.
  90. Which means that I have to look at how the values live in my personal life,
  91. how the values get manifested when I'm working with teams.
  92. How do the values get manifested when I'm frustrated? How do the values
  93. get manifest when I'm under stress. And so I have to seek feedback from folks.
  94. I have to receive that feedback and then I have to act
  95. or use that feedback as it comes in the form of humility.
  96. And so our values give us humility as a gift and you
  97. know these are the kinds of things that help us move in
  98. a world where ambiguous is running rampant or we don't know what
  99. to do or there's a situation that we're really not familiar with.
  100. What we can do is we can back or lean our
  101. backs against the wall of our values and that will give us
  102. the courage and the foundation to make sure that we're making decisions
  103. that are congruent or or in line with our organizational values.
  104. And so I would encourage you that have your your team review
  105. and dig deep into those values if they seek to be effective.
  106. My name is andre come on,
  107. I want to say thank you for engaging
  108. in this conversation about values when we can't see
  109. and I look forward to seeing who we
  110. become as we continue these types of conversations,
  111. have a great day, Bye!
