  1. Okay, welcome back, remember to smile.
  2. This is the Keys to happiness, this is volume three.
  3. The Keys to Happiness part one.
  4. So we looked, we ended off here right with the
  5. fact that you should seek satisfactory outcomes.
  6. Just make sure that like we'll talk later in this
  7. class about goal setting and smart goal setting is a
  8. good way to to a good a good path to
  9. follow. And in smart, although it's an acronym right?
  10. And they all stand for something and um the A.
  11. And the r.
  12. There's there's some different scenes of opinions but like a
  13. lot of people use the a.
  14. As attainable goal, make sure your goals are attainable, make
  15. sure there relevant, make sure that they're actually, you know,
  16. things that you because you know, if I if I,
  17. you know, let's say I'm in high school and I
  18. say well I want to be an astronaut when I
  19. grow up, right?
  20. Like mhm I got bad news for you.
  21. The the the odds that that happens are pretty small,
  22. right? That's not really a reasonable outcome.
  23. But if I say like, hey I'm going to be
  24. top five in this class in that class and then
  25. hopefully the outcomes, those those those maximum gains come later,
  26. just you know, I just happen to happen and you
  27. know, and we're actually gonna talk about that quite a
  28. bit with our video quiz for this week, I don't
  29. want to spoil that one.
  30. Um so the next key to happiness develop and maintain
  31. friendships with happy people, okay.
  32. And I think a lot of you know this whether
  33. or not you are able to take a step back
  34. from your own situation and really recognize it is this
  35. is a trickier part, right?
  36. A lot of times we go, yeah, yeah, I'm happy
  37. relationships, I hang out with happy people, but then we
  38. get, you know, we make excuses for hanging out with
  39. people who are happy and then they bring us down,
  40. but so so it's important to every once a while
  41. just do like kind of a self check and then
  42. check your environment, be aware of of who you're interacting
  43. with. But here are some some some take home notes
  44. when it comes to developing and maintaining friendships with happy
  45. people, first of all positive interactions with people facilitate being
  46. happy. Okay, so when you have good interactions with people,
  47. you are, you will bring about happiness, Gosh, we were
  48. talking about health and stress earlier, there's like a lot
  49. of articles out there that and studies that have proven
  50. that like um you know, some men have a shorter
  51. lifespan, expected lifespan than women, but what brings that average
  52. like way way down is single men, right?
  53. They don't have as many positive interactions and um you
  54. know, I know some of you might argue, argue that
  55. fact um but like what they find is that like
  56. if you if you end up being like kind of
  57. single and not having a lot of relationships that that
  58. can actually do health damage to your health.
  59. And so positive interactions bring about happiness.
  60. Um so so putting yourself in that situation where you're
  61. going to interact with people in a positive way, don't
  62. say right, um getting connected secondly, getting connected to happy
  63. people, improves your own happiness again, this is that whole
  64. like take a step back, look at the 50,000 ft
  65. view and say, am I surrounded myself with happy people,
  66. right? Because typically if you're connected with happy people you
  67. will be more happy.
  68. It's just one of those things just rubs off on
  69. you. You probably already know this part.
  70. Right? Lastly each additional person in your network makes you
  71. happier. This one can be, you know a little bit
  72. argued, I think there's like this idea of like friends
  73. and quality over quantity kind of thing.
  74. But the idea is I think here is each quality
  75. additional, each additional quality person in your network will make
  76. you happier.
  77. Okay and again, that kind of goes back to this
  78. idea that like the shortest lifespan are men who are
  79. single and don't have a lot of social relationships in
  80. their later years in life.
  81. Okay, yeah, developing a self a sense of self esteem.
  82. We will talk about self esteem and self confidence in
  83. a chapter coming up pretty soon in the lecture series
  84. coming up pretty soon, just just to define self esteem,
  85. like a textbook dictionary type.
  86. Uh you know the definition would be that self esteem
  87. is somebody's confidence in their own worth, their confidence in
  88. your own abilities.
  89. You can even just be boiled down into self respect.
  90. Right? So are you confident in your worth?
  91. Are you confident in your abilities?
  92. And do you respect yourself if you can develop a
  93. high sense of seem this will help you um to
  94. love other people and to be loved in return?
  95. Okay. Um and that's important, right?
  96. And we'll talk about tips when we get to that
  97. chapter about how to build your self esteem will talk
  98. quite a bit about that actually.
  99. Um And it's important here, like we're going to talk
  100. about money and the money's relationship to happiness here in
  101. a minute, but it's usually a good thing not to
  102. give top priority to financial success.
  103. What do you build financial success into your self esteem?
  104. Like? Oh my own self worth is all based on
  105. how much money I have, what kind of car drive,
  106. how big my houses, that stuff can be taken away
  107. pretty easily.
  108. And really self esteem should be built around qualities that
  109. you've instilled in yourself that don't change, right?
  110. So because nobody can take those kind of qualities away
  111. from you, they can take your car, you can take
  112. your house, They can but they can't take away qualities
  113. that you've um developed.
  114. And so it's a lot easier to maintain a good
  115. self esteem through rough times if you don't stop place
  116. top priority on financial success.
  117. Yeah. Um and then another one appreciate the joys of
  118. day to day living and we are all guilty of
  119. this, right?
  120. And when we watch the video quiz for week one
  121. and we'll also talk about this a little bit in
  122. our week one discussion, it's like how do you do
  123. it? Right.
  124. So it's important to remember that like exciting events can
  125. become fairly routine after a while.
  126. In fact I took my my kids to school for
  127. the first day of school today, right?
  128. And that's something that's really exciting and that was not
  129. a routine thing, right?
  130. But taking them to school as exciting as it seems
  131. on day one becomes a routine and it becomes something
  132. that you just don't really think about it anymore after
  133. a while.
  134. Okay, so how do we search for the positive and
  135. exciting things that are happening in our life and not
  136. just thinking of them as routine.
  137. One of the tips that we're gonna see when we
  138. get to video quiz one is the idea of positive
  139. journaling or writing down three gratitude three things.
  140. You're grateful for the last 24 hours.
  141. What that does is it helps us kind of like
  142. scan our environment for positive things that are happening Our
  143. news, you know, every, it doesn't matter what if you
  144. watch any news right?
  145. Like 80-90% of the stories are going to be negative.
  146. Is that really representative of what's happening in the world?
  147. Probably not right?
  148. But we tend to go out into the world and
  149. then start to think that 80-90% of the things that
  150. are happening or negative.
  151. So it takes a little bit of work on our
  152. part, to be more aware to be more um cognizant
  153. of the exciting events that are happening on a day
  154. to day basis and celebrate those and make sure that
  155. you appreciate those joys and savor what you have right
  156. now, right?
  157. And what I put down here in my own notes,
  158. was living in the present moment.
  159. I do this through meditation is just like a tool.
  160. It's like a training tool for me to try to
  161. bring myself back to the president, not thinking about what
  162. happened earlier today or yesterday or a year from a
  163. year ago.
  164. Not trying to think too much about what's going to
  165. happen in the future, but just living in the present
  166. moment helps you save for what you have right now
  167. and that will help you appreciate the joys of day
  168. to day living.
  169. I mean, how many times do you think?
  170. Excuse me?
  171. There's something that's appreciable right there in front of you.
  172. You could have appreciated the moment would have been a
  173. huge win for your, for your day, but you're too
  174. busy thinking about what you were gonna do later.
  175. Okay, it happens all of us.
  176. Okay, be fair, be kind and be helpful and then
  177. trust other people.
  178. So I'm trying to my camera refocus.
  179. Um so it can start with the golden rule okay,
  180. and if you don't know what the golden rule is,
  181. it's treating people other people like you would want to
  182. be treated yourself right?
  183. And many, many studies have shown that this is a
  184. true contributor to Happiness Boy, and I love talking about
  185. this topic when I get into my management class and
  186. I'll talk a little bit more about this topic in
  187. this class when we get to our leadership section.
  188. But yeah, like oh my gosh, when you deal with
  189. somebody else where you can tell like they're treating you
  190. like they would want to be treated oh my gosh,
  191. that's it's huge right?
  192. But from a yeah, almost a selfish standpoint treating other
  193. people the way you would want to be treated will
  194. actually bring you happiness.
  195. Same thing here, helping other people, brings us happiness and
  196. it's okay that that like there might be some selfish
  197. aspect there right?
  198. There's actually quite a few case studies where it's like
  199. okay um gave um you know somebody was asking for
  200. money, I gave them money and I feel bad now
  201. because I felt so good giving it to them right,
  202. I shouldn't be celebrating, that shouldn't be, you know, um
  203. feeling like I'm so awesome because I did that right?
  204. Like I feel guilty now um and I don't I
  205. don't believe in that.
  206. I think that if it brings you personal happiness, that
  207. is fantastic.
  208. In fact going back to this video quiz one again,
  209. we're going to talk about random acts of kindness and
  210. uh oh man, that's a great one to where like,
  211. you kind of do a random act of kindness, maybe
  212. you just send a coworker a random text message or
  213. an email going up just like going out of your
  214. way to really thanking them or saying something super positive
  215. to them to make them feel better.
  216. It's like you get this rush of like, oh yeah,
  217. I feel so good.
  218. Now I did that.
  219. That's okay, right?
  220. You shouldn't feel guilty that that brought you some form
  221. of pleasure.
  222. Okay, the keys to happiness part two.
  223. Well look at the fun factor keeping your life fun
  224. coping, so coping with things like grief and stress being,
  225. having energy, physical energy and, and, and kind of like
  226. what that brings sticking to your values.
  227. And we're going to talk about the one I know
  228. you guys are interested in is does money lead to
  229. happiness? And then it kind of wrap it all up
  230. with living a meaningful life.
  231. So having fun in your life, Okay, we find that
  232. a happy life has fun in it.
  233. Okay, as these other words to these other buzzwords?
  234. S joy delight.
  235. Okay, so, so it's about building activities in your life
  236. that, you know, have those things, but I really like
  237. this part too is that I added in there was
  238. novelty contributes to happiness.
  239. So don't over plan things.
  240. I mentioned that a little bit earlier.
  241. You might want to plan to like, hey, I'm gonna
  242. go to the beach with my friends on friday because
  243. I know that makes me happy.
  244. So I'm going to do that and you plan for
  245. that. But where you can kind of kill it is
  246. by over planning it right?
  247. And be like, okay, we're going to do this from
  248. 6 to 7, we do this from 7 to 8,
  249. we're gonna eat at eight and then we're going to
  250. do this instead.
  251. What you find is that like the fun kind of
  252. just happens a little bit more of a right and
  253. unstructured um, format.
  254. So, um, I think that's a good point spot to
  255. mention too that like one of the keys to having
  256. fun then versus knowing what it is that brings you
  257. that, that you have fun doing right?
  258. And that's just like that happiness question is, can you
  259. back up and can you say what truly do I
  260. find fun and then hanging out with fun people for
  261. sure. But then it's this idea of like, can you
  262. let go a little bit, can you just let let
  263. go of control for a little bit to let yourself
  264. have some fun and that's harder for a lot of
  265. people than they think, hi, Um, got about a minute
  266. left and then I'm gonna have to go to volume
  267. four. So just a heads up there.
  268. Um, mm But one of the other main keys to
  269. happiness is learning to cope with things like grief, disappointment,
  270. coping with setbacks and stress, right?
  271. Nothing happens like in a linear process.
  272. It's not like, okay, I did this now.
  273. This is what happens next.
  274. And when that happens, it all goes according to plan.
  275. Like that'd be great.
  276. Right? But that's just not what happens.
  277. So we need to learn to face problems without being
  278. overwhelmed by just like breaking down or by just running
  279. away. Right?
  280. We've got to practice facing problems, right?
  281. I like to call it leaning into problems like this,
  282. right? It's so easy to cut and run.
  283. But when you maybe instead, when you see problems, uh,
  284. can you can just lean into it and like, and,
  285. and just get uncomfortable for a little bit because when
  286. you do that once or twice, you'll be amazed with
  287. how much better you could add it in the future.
  288. Okay, so that's a good spot to stop real quick.
  289. I will come back with volume for and we'll finish
  290. out this lecture series
