00:01 - 00:03
Hello, My name is bryan Herta.
00:03 - 00:05
Today I will be talking about how
00:05 - 00:08
social media affects the identity construction of adolescence
00:09 - 00:11
today, we're gonna be looking at both the positives,
00:11 - 00:13
the negatives and what you should take away from this.
00:13 - 00:19
This presidency is open for anyone to use. So if you have
00:20 - 00:24
um any you want to look at something again, you can go ahead.
00:24 - 00:28
Um another thing to know is I am not trying
00:28 - 00:32
to convince your mind otherwise of something you should believe.
00:32 - 00:37
I'm simply trying to inform you based on all the information I have gathered.
00:37 - 00:43
So yeah, you know, don't don't think of it like a lecture like
00:44 - 00:46
me trying to convince you or slapping you on the head with a
00:46 - 00:50
book just simply as me informing you of what I have found.
00:50 - 00:52
All right, So let's get started.
00:54 - 00:56
So first, you know, the positives,
00:56 - 01:00
what how does social media social media benefit adolescents?
01:00 - 01:02
So, you know,
01:03 - 01:07
when people believe that social media, you know, it's the root of all evil,
01:07 - 01:08
it's simply natural.
01:08 - 01:15
Uh social media um has many positive, like it helps adolescents with self esteem.
01:16 - 01:17
You know, when
01:18 - 01:22
adolescents play video games, they can create an identity of who they want to be,
01:22 - 01:28
just helps them, you know, feel better about themselves um because you know, they
01:28 - 01:31
are welcome back community. So they're not really like
01:31 - 01:32
punished for like
01:33 - 01:35
being who they want to be.
01:35 - 01:37
It makes them feel better about themselves because
01:37 - 01:39
they're welcomed by others and you know,
01:39 - 01:41
the others, you know share similar
01:42 - 01:43
um
01:43 - 01:48
characteristics, you know, like they're similar every everyone in that group.
01:48 - 01:51
you know, they have a similar idea, they're kind of welcomed and you know,
01:51 - 01:55
it makes you feel like not only makes you feel like you're part of that group.
01:55 - 01:57
Another thing is um
01:57 - 01:57
you know,
01:57 - 02:02
adolescents can post what they want on social media to like portray themselves.
02:02 - 02:06
So for example, I could post with a lot of money, people would think I'm rich, I could
02:08 - 02:12
post myself painting and like people would think I'm an artist.
02:12 - 02:17
So you know, people get that like um idea like um
02:17 - 02:20
they can be who they want to be, it helps them, you know,
02:20 - 02:23
feel better about themselves and who they want to be.
02:23 - 02:27
Another thing to look at is actually helps prevent depression,
02:27 - 02:30
which is like the complete opposite of what some people think.
02:30 - 02:31
Um
02:32 - 02:34
you know from the article that I read,
02:34 - 02:38
uh it's listed at the bottom of the article says that um
02:38 - 02:41
adolescent needs someone to listen to the story to their story.
02:41 - 02:43
What that means is they
02:45 - 02:48
um was a excuse me.
02:50 - 02:54
They need someone to guide them along their path.
02:54 - 02:57
What that means is a lot of times, you know,
02:57 - 03:01
we often talk with someone about like what you wanna do with your life,
03:01 - 03:07
what you're currently doing, how you wanna do that stuff like that, you know,
03:07 - 03:08
just get a,
03:09 - 03:12
you know, plan of your life and you talk to someone about it, however, if you know,
03:12 - 03:15
you don't have anyone to talk to,
03:15 - 03:18
you can feel a little lonely and that can lead to depression.
03:18 - 03:20
So you know,
03:20 - 03:23
social media is an open platform where you can meet anyone talk to anyone.
03:24 - 03:27
So it helps with that, you know, I need to talk to someone, I need a
03:28 - 03:31
explain myself. Social media hopes with that because
03:32 - 03:33
it makes them feel not lonely.
03:35 - 03:35
Yeah
03:36 - 03:40
another thing is it helps them discover themselves as I said in the first example,
03:40 - 03:42
you know video games, people
03:43 - 03:44
are welcomed
03:44 - 03:47
by a community, it helps them, you know,
03:48 - 03:52
uh it makes them feel welcomed by the community because of who they are.
03:53 - 03:54
Um
03:54 - 03:58
uh this is actually a quote I found from the text
03:58 - 04:02
listed at the bottom which says importantly the basis of person
04:02 - 04:07
society integration is that individuals choose and commit to cultural values
04:07 - 04:09
and the norms that fits their own personal interests and values.
04:09 - 04:11
What this means is, you know,
04:12 - 04:18
people look at, you know, people in society, they create values um for themselves,
04:18 - 04:19
you know based on what they see around them.
04:19 - 04:23
So if people, you know, posting on social media,
04:24 - 04:27
you know, they're all like having fun hanging out with friends and you know,
04:27 - 04:30
you might think I need to go make friends which
04:30 - 04:32
can be a positive but it can also be a negative
04:33 - 04:36
but I think right now I'm seeing this as a positive because you can
04:37 - 04:40
make friends have fun travel,
04:40 - 04:43
do stuff like that because you know, it's good for them
04:44 - 04:49
Alright, that's done with the positives now onto the negatives all my by
04:51 - 04:56
you know, social media as you know it seems from most people it's pretty good,
04:56 - 04:58
others is pretty bad
04:59 - 05:03
but you know social media has its flaws obviously what doesn't have its flaws,
05:03 - 05:06
but social media can cause high levels of anxiety
05:07 - 05:08
and
05:08 - 05:09
um
05:10 - 05:11
what this text basically said is,
05:12 - 05:13
you know, although you know,
05:14 - 05:16
there's no significant correlation between
05:16 - 05:18
technology use and identity exploration.
05:18 - 05:21
There is like high
05:21 - 05:22
um
05:23 - 05:26
there is a significant correlation in regard to time spent using
05:26 - 05:31
communication technology with an identity
05:31 - 05:34
distress and with existential anxiety,
05:34 - 05:38
what this means is, you know, although there's not a connection between,
05:38 - 05:41
you know how people find themselves in technology.
05:41 - 05:45
They have seen that like because people on social media so much there is that
05:45 - 05:48
like worried nous that not worrying this more
05:48 - 05:51
like that fear that's better that people,
05:51 - 05:52
you know,
05:52 - 05:57
they're not finding themselves who they are and they just like create like um
05:57 - 06:00
and anxiety within yourself because you worry,
06:00 - 06:02
you're not gonna find anyone or you're not gonna find yourself.
06:04 - 06:06
Another thing is online relationships
06:07 - 06:11
and some things to know is that like although you know it sounds good,
06:11 - 06:13
it's not as good because
06:14 - 06:17
it makes you more vulnerable towards um
06:19 - 06:26
people you meet in real life because you when you date online, it makes you, you know,
06:27 - 06:32
you don't see the person I guess as often as you would like you're not actually there,
06:32 - 06:36
you're like messaging each other and I can create like a
06:37 - 06:38
uh
06:38 - 06:42
problem when you actually try to, you know, talk to meet someone in real life,
06:42 - 06:46
you know that real life, you try to meet someone that's not through online, it can,
06:46 - 06:47
you know,
06:47 - 06:51
make you more worried because you're actually seeing a person face to face,
06:51 - 06:54
you know, on a date instead of through a phone.
06:55 - 06:56
So yeah,
06:57 - 07:00
uh solution to this I would say is, you know,
07:01 - 07:05
adolescents need to be careful with who they meet online. They need to be careful,
07:05 - 07:09
make their account's private so, you know, people can make fun of them,
07:09 - 07:13
they also shouldn't spend as much time on social media basically, like
07:14 - 07:19
um don't, you know, don't date online, not saying you should, shouldn't,
07:19 - 07:23
but you know, you need to be careful because it can create some very, very bad
07:24 - 07:26
um experiences
07:26 - 07:28
now what I want you to take away.
07:29 - 07:31
Social media does affect everyone differently and
07:31 - 07:35
it especially affects every adolescent differently because,
07:35 - 07:38
you know, maybe some people are finding more addictive, maybe some others don't.
07:38 - 07:43
So, you know, just keep that in mind. You know, they're both positive and negatives.
07:43 - 07:46
Like I said at the very start, I'm not trying to change your mind,
07:46 - 07:48
I'm just saying this is what I found.
07:48 - 07:50
So here's what you should take away
07:51 - 07:53
that was both positive and negative.
07:54 - 07:55
Lastly,
07:55 - 07:57
there's more to social media than just, you know,
07:58 - 07:59
I mean, there's more
08:00 - 08:04
and just social media that affects the identity development of social media
08:04 - 08:06
messed that up. Excuse me. Um,
08:07 - 08:12
what the last point is trying to say is social media isn't the main cause of
08:13 - 08:17
what adolescents turn out to be because there's a lot of causes, you know, of,
08:17 - 08:21
you know, who they hang out with, what their families like, where they live,
08:21 - 08:22
what they do.
08:22 - 08:25
So just keep that in mind when you know,
08:25 - 08:31
you think about what's the main cause of uh identity of adolescence.
08:34 - 08:38
So yeah, that's my presentation. I hope you enjoyed hope. It was very informative
08:39 - 08:39
and
08:40 - 08:41
thank you.
