00:02 - 00:03
Hello everyone.
00:03 - 00:05
My name is Trillini Hicks and we're gonna
00:05 - 00:08
be talking all about the co teaching models.
00:10 - 00:11
Alright.
00:11 - 00:14
So before we get to identify what the co teaching models are,
00:14 - 00:20
I think it's very important that we should define what co teaching actually is.
00:21 - 00:23
So co teaching is when a general education
00:23 - 00:28
teacher and a special education teacher worked together within
00:28 - 00:33
a general education setting to provide instructions and support
00:33 - 00:34
to the students that are in the classroom.
00:38 - 00:45
Now there are five comical teaching styles or models. Okay? You have team teach
00:46 - 00:52
parallel teaching station teaching alternative teaching and last
00:52 - 00:54
but not least one teach one assist.
00:58 - 01:03
So the first one that I'm gonna go ahead and talk about is team teaching. Alright.
01:03 - 01:10
So I basically I'm gonna talk about how um co teachers can achieve team teaching.
01:11 - 01:16
So with this both teachers are at the front of the room and they are actively teaching
01:16 - 01:20
the educators tag team each other while they're teaching.
01:20 - 01:24
So for example when educator makes a point the
01:24 - 01:27
other educator may elaborate more on the point if needed
01:28 - 01:30
when they're team teaching.
01:30 - 01:36
Normally the co teachers don't pre plan on what is going to be said or who's
01:36 - 01:38
gonna say what they normally just go with
01:38 - 01:41
the flow and the input information as needed.
01:50 - 01:52
Alright. So how to parallel teach
01:53 - 01:55
In order to achieve parallel teaching,
01:55 - 01:58
the class should be divided into two groups.
01:59 - 02:03
Both of the educators are going to teach different groups
02:03 - 02:07
but they're going to be teaching the same lesson at the same time,
02:19 - 02:21
how to station teach
02:22 - 02:27
A station teaching students are divided into three or more groups.
02:27 - 02:31
The groups are dispersed at different learning stations. Okay.
02:31 - 02:35
And as you can see to the right of your screen we have different stations.
02:36 - 02:38
Um there is a teacher last station
02:39 - 02:42
you have independent practice station.
02:42 - 02:47
You have a collaborative station where students are collaborating with
02:47 - 02:50
each other and then you have a technology station.
02:51 - 02:54
Okay. So the groups who started one
02:55 - 02:59
particular group and then they will rotate until everyone has
02:59 - 03:00
finish each group.
03:11 - 03:17
Okay. So how is our tenants teaching accomplished?
03:17 - 03:19
So one educator teaches most of the class
03:20 - 03:25
while the other educator teaches a small group of students and modified
03:26 - 03:30
in or alternative version of the lesson that is being taught.
03:32 - 03:38
And at the bottom of the screen you will see how um you have one teacher teaching on one
03:38 - 03:40
side of the room and then you have another
03:40 - 03:42
teacher teacher on the other side of the room.
03:42 - 03:46
And for the most part you know say if um
03:47 - 03:52
a teacher is talking about um let's see fractions right?
03:52 - 03:56
Um the teacher that is teaching the modified version,
03:56 - 04:02
maybe touching bases on the pre required skills before teaching the actual
04:03 - 04:04
um lesson
04:12 - 04:15
Last but not least one teach 1 assist.
04:16 - 04:20
So how can co teachers accomplish this type of co teaching style.
04:21 - 04:25
So one educator takes the role of the primary teacher
04:26 - 04:29
and teaches them a lesson to the entire class
04:29 - 04:32
while the other educator is roaming the class
04:33 - 04:35
providing help to the students
04:35 - 04:38
and managing any issues that may occur
04:38 - 04:40
in addition to all of this.
04:40 - 04:42
Um the teacher that is assisting
04:43 - 04:49
may um ask for clarification from the primary teacher that is teaching
04:49 - 04:53
the lesson so that it helps students have a better understanding.
04:53 - 04:58
So the teacher says something in regards to the lesson that is not clear.
04:58 - 04:58
You know,
04:58 - 05:01
the teacher that is assisting may speak up and
05:01 - 05:06
asks for um questions that are for clarification purposes.
05:17 - 05:24
Okay, so of course there are pros and cons to all of the co teaching models.
05:24 - 05:28
However, today we're gonna focus on the benefits of the co teaching models.
05:28 - 05:34
So on this particular side, right here, I am listed each of the co teaching models
05:35 - 05:39
and I have decided to identify what I believe is
05:39 - 05:42
a good benefit for that particular co teaching model.
05:43 - 05:45
So for example, we have team teaching.
05:46 - 05:48
Something that I feel like is a great benefit from this
05:48 - 05:53
particular model is that both teachers are able to actively teach.
05:54 - 06:00
So for a parallel teaching um it lowers the student teacher ratio.
06:00 - 06:06
So instead of the teachers having to teach a larger group of students,
06:06 - 06:12
you're able to lower that number and have more one on one interaction.
06:12 - 06:14
Um with the group of students
06:16 - 06:17
as far as station teaching,
06:17 - 06:21
it allows for more materials to be covered in a shorter time frame.
06:21 - 06:25
So being that the students are retaining to different stations,
06:25 - 06:30
you're able to get more accomplished within a set time period,
06:31 - 06:32
as far as alternative teaching.
06:33 - 06:38
Alternative teaching provides additional to support to struggling students
06:38 - 06:41
without singling them out of the classroom.
06:43 - 06:44
one teach 1 assist
06:45 - 06:47
that provides data that can inform
06:47 - 06:50
future instruction intervention and student grouping.
06:50 - 06:57
So what I mean about this is when one teacher is um leading the classroom,
06:57 - 07:00
the teacher that is providing assistance can be making
07:00 - 07:05
mental notes or taking down data um to help the
07:05 - 07:07
primary a lead teacher
07:08 - 07:10
construct, you know,
07:10 - 07:14
their lessons and their instructional um setting with in the future
07:15 - 07:16
or for the future.
07:25 - 07:32
And then the last slide of my presentation is this video that I have attached
07:32 - 07:35
about co teaching models is basically going to
07:35 - 07:38
summarize everything that I have talked about.
07:38 - 07:41
Um So if you have time, I would definitely
07:41 - 07:44
take a look at this Youtube video.
