  1. our last component of the best training that we want to provide you with
  2. is going to be the best instructional guide for mathematics or the Big M.
  3. The Big M. If you notice has the number one in place of the eye
  4. and that's because math is always number one
  5. and our Big M.
  6. Is our guide for planning for student instruction,
  7. student learning and instruction.
  8. So there are eight components of the Big M.
  9. And I'm going to go over the eight components just so you have an idea and definitions
  10. as you go through it for each one of the courses that you are assigned to.
  11. So as you are creating the presentations
  12. and your presentations for the summer training,
  13. these are the things that you need to look out for.
  14. So we're going to first start off with our benchmark of focus which is the focal
  15. point of for the instruction is also known as the benchmark for um or a focus.
  16. So looking at our benchmark again, same things that we've seen in the past.
  17. It has our language for the benchmark are examples and are clarifications
  18. for the sake of this video.
  19. We're going to look at the seventh grade benchmark seven
  20. A are 11 and also geometry 9 12 Gr 22.
  21. Again with the language and the clarifications again,
  22. make sure that you're looking at the clarifications and examples
  23. to know exactly what course these benchmarks are for.
  24. So I know that this is for 7th grade
  25. and also for the course of geometry by looking at those clarifications and examples
  26. from the benchmark of focus. We're not going to look at
  27. connecting the horizontal
  28. alignment.
  29. Excuse me connecting the benchmarks and horizontal alignment
  30. and with the connecting benchmarks and horizontal alignment.
  31. This is a list of connecting benchmarks that
  32. relate horizontally to the benchmark of focus.
  33. So again we picked the seventh grade and we picked the geometry.
  34. So with the horizontal alignment is
  35. defined as the intentional progression of content
  36. within a grade level or course linking skills within and across standards.
  37. So we have our list of benchmarks for the 7th grade
  38. as well as those that are linking
  39. again within the course for geometry
  40. we also have connecting benchmarks that these are benchmarks that
  41. either um make a mathematical connection or include prerequisite skills.
  42. These lists are not comprehensive so it is up to the educator to look
  43. for more connections that are within the
  44. benchmarks and the standards that are there.
  45. Um There will be um sometimes where the list will not include benchmarks for from
  46. the same standard since the benchmark within the
  47. same standard already has an inherent connection.
  48. So you're not gonna find, again we pick a R. Seven A. R.
  49. Seven A. R. N. E seven A. R. S are not going to be listed here.
  50. Um Again of course in geometry it is going to have gr because
  51. this is a geometry course but it won't have the same standards.
  52. So again that's our connecting benchmarks.
  53. The next component that we're going to look at
  54. is our terms from the K. Through 12 glossary. These are coming from the appendix C.
  55. The K. Through 12 glossary.
  56. And these are terms that are related to the benchmark of focus.
  57. So again we chose that they are and these are three
  58. of the terms that are connected to the seven A.
  59. R. 11
  60. coefficient
  61. linear expression, rational number.
  62. And for the geometry
  63. we have again for that gr coordinate plane, dilation, origin, reflection,
  64. rigid transformation rotation, scale factor and translation.
  65. And this section um should not be viewed as a comprehensive list again. Um Again
  66. it is up to the instructor, the educator to find other words that are there.
  67. So we want to look at this list um instead
  68. as a reference for you to use for instruction.
  69. Okay. And that's our terms.
  70. The next component
  71. is our vertical alignment. So also a part of
  72. the big M.
  73. Against the vertical alignment.
  74. The vertical alignment again is a list of related
  75. benchmarks that connect vertically to the benchmark of focus.
  76. Again we looked at that seven.
  77. Um that's seven a. r.
  78. and now my vertical again,
  79. definition of vertical alignment is the intentional progression of content from
  80. one year to the next spanning across multiple grade levels.
  81. So we have our previous benchmarks and our next benchmarks.
  82. So again this was from the seven A. R. And we're looking at the six A. R.
  83. 14 that connects
  84. And eight a. R. 1 3. That is the next benchmarks to come.
  85. Same thing. Looking at geometry
  86. we have our previous benchmarks that came from the eighth grade.
  87. So it may eight gr to that entire standard is
  88. previous benchmarks that I need to connect with it.
  89. And then um coming up in our next courses will be R. 9 12 F.
  90. Which is our financial
  91. looking at are F. 2.2
  92. and so forth. So again just connecting those benchmarks
  93. to our next courses Again um If the benchmark of focus is a
  94. new concept or skill and may not have any previous benchmarks listed.
  95. Also if the benchmark of focus is a mathematical
  96. skill or concept that is finalized in the learning
  97. and does not have any direct connection to future grade levels.
  98. It may not have any again future benchmarks listed as well
  99. reminder. Again this is not a comprehensive list but used again as a guide.
  100. Um And again this is our vertical alignment.
  101. Our next component
  102. is our instructional strategies.
  103. This further
  104. gives us a narrative for instruction of the benchmark and vertical alignment.
  105. So we're going to now look at a little deeper at those instructional strategies.
  106. So for seven A. R.
  107. It tells us and gives us um what the students have done previously in
  108. grade six and also what they're going to be doing in grade eight.
  109. Um This also includes this section includes explanations and details
  110. for the benchmark vocabulary not provided within the appendix C.
  111. It also will provide me with
  112. possible instructional strategies and teaching methods
  113. and also strategies to invent potentially related M TRS.
  114. So if you look again on the list it also gives us a list and highlights those M.
  115. TRS that are a part of that benchmark of focus
  116. Alright. And those are instructional strategies.
  117. If that is exciting we have three more parts are common misconceptions or errors.
  118. Again this is our common students
  119. misconceptions or errors and it addresses those
  120. misconceptions and errors that the students make.
  121. This can also be used
  122. as a strategy
  123. went in the classroom and performed and used
  124. possibly as a formative assessment within construction.
  125. So again those are there including some strategies
  126. as well to help correct those misconceptions.
  127. We also have our instructional tests,
  128. instructional tasks demonstrates
  129. the depth of the benchmarks or how far we need to
  130. go in connection to the related benchmarks that were provided.
  131. So again here um these will give you
  132. an example instructional tasks which may be open ended
  133. or are intended to demonstrate the depth
  134. of the benchmark.
  135. We can also use these to integrate our M.
  136. TRS and again it is called out here in our instructional tasks.
  137. What
  138. you can also use the instructional tasks um for um
  139. our enrichment. So for later
  140. courses or great levels
  141. and again some tasks may require extended time,
  142. additional materials and collaboration
  143. and our last component
  144. are the instructional items.
  145. The instructional items
  146. demonstrates the focus of the benchmark.
  147. It gives an example of items that may be used
  148. as evidence to demonstrate the students understanding of the benchmark
  149. And it may highlight one or more parts of the benchmark.
  150. So again, these examples were from
  151. The seven a. Are 1, 1
  152. and from our geometry.
  153. And then again is items that we will see within our big M. So the big M.
  154. Is used as our best instructional guide for mathematics.
  155. So all courses kindergarten through 12th grade will have a big M.
  156. That is connected to it
  157. Approved by all eight of these components.
  158. Alright, so I hope you have gained something from the video.
  159. Hopefully that's helpful.
