00:01 - 00:05
Hello, this is blanca Hernandez, this is my video reflection.
00:06 - 00:07
Uh, first question being,
00:07 - 00:11
do you think taking this class on campus would have been a better experience and uh,
00:11 - 00:14
and I do think it would be
00:15 - 00:18
mostly just because I learned better in person.
00:18 - 00:21
I feel it, it allows me to focus more and
00:22 - 00:26
uh, it allows for less distraction, I would say, I think at home and just
00:27 - 00:34
distracted. Um I also just missed the idea of going into a classroom.
00:34 - 00:38
I like the feeling of getting up and getting ready.
00:38 - 00:40
I think it just adds a little little value or a little
00:40 - 00:44
purpose to life rather than just getting rolling out of bed and,
00:44 - 00:46
you know, logging on to a classroom.
00:47 - 00:53
I also think that it allows for that true interpersonal skill, uh,
00:53 - 00:57
to allow us to network, you never really know who you'd sit next to.
00:57 - 01:01
You know, it could be the next ceo to, I don't know, like apple or something, I don't,
01:01 - 01:02
I don't know,
01:02 - 01:06
but you get to meet new people and really make connections and just really feel
01:06 - 01:08
that level of inclusion
01:08 - 01:11
that you don't really get through an online class.
01:11 - 01:13
Um, so yeah, as a communications class,
01:13 - 01:17
I think it would be really fun for it to have been on campus.
01:19 - 01:21
The follow up question would be, you know,
01:21 - 01:24
what would you like to see done differently in this class?
01:24 - 01:28
And to be completely fair, this is my first time in college. So
01:29 - 01:32
I feel a little out of place answering the question.
01:32 - 01:33
Uh, for me,
01:33 - 01:36
this not only met my expectations of what
01:36 - 01:39
a communications class is supposed to look like,
01:39 - 01:40
but it actually exceeded it.
01:41 - 01:41
I felt
01:42 - 01:43
very supported
01:44 - 01:48
and I felt that there was just plenty of extra credit opportunities.
01:48 - 01:54
The assignments were very fun. I felt that I really did develop myself
01:55 - 01:56
and
01:56 - 01:56
yeah,
01:56 - 01:59
I just overall just a very fun and interactive class
01:59 - 02:04
and I expected a communications class to be interactive,
02:04 - 02:05
but I think the way that it was
02:05 - 02:08
handled for an online communications class was pretty,
02:08 - 02:09
pretty awesome.
02:09 - 02:13
Uh this is actually the only class where I was required
02:13 - 02:17
to show face and to actually answer questions for credit,
02:17 - 02:20
like class credit, which really just made
02:21 - 02:24
the entire class feel more like alive in a way.
02:24 - 02:26
So if I did have to change anything,
02:26 - 02:31
I would just say on campus because to make it an on campus
02:31 - 02:33
uh class,
02:34 - 02:35
just because
02:35 - 02:37
I think it would have added even more
02:37 - 02:41
volume to that Interactive Nous and and whatnot.
02:41 - 02:45
But ultimately, it it was a very fun class for me, a very great class.
02:45 - 02:47
I learned a lot as well
02:48 - 02:55
and I've applied a lot of that into my life actually. So the next question is,
02:56 - 02:57
what chapter
02:58 - 03:00
Did you benefit most from meaning,
03:00 - 03:03
which chapter did you think I can really use that in my life?
03:03 - 03:07
And actually chapters eight and 10 were pretty huge,
03:07 - 03:10
mainly just because of the timing at which we were learning.
03:11 - 03:12
It was
03:13 - 03:18
actually at the exact times where I was falling into a conflict
03:18 - 03:21
or there was like a silent conflict and we kind of,
03:21 - 03:24
you know, touched upon that within the class
03:25 - 03:30
and within the chapter relationships as well.
03:30 - 03:32
Whether no matter what type of relationships are,
03:32 - 03:35
I'm thinking of a specific one at the moment,
03:35 - 03:40
but it just kind of came at the right time where it kind of gave me a sidebar.
03:40 - 03:41
It was almost like
03:42 - 03:45
advice without giving advice in a way.
03:45 - 03:49
It was like, hey, you're going through that kind of, so,
03:51 - 03:55
you know, light bulb, like, let's try to figure this out, you know?
03:55 - 03:57
Uh, and that's,
03:57 - 04:00
that's pretty much the whole reason why these two chapters were highlighted.
04:00 - 04:01
But yeah,
04:01 - 04:05
all of the chapters were beneficial and I think I had to take all of them with me.
04:07 - 04:10
My thoughts on our
04:11 - 04:13
white privileged conversation
04:14 - 04:17
actually says, what about the conversation? Made you open your eyes?
04:17 - 04:21
I think ultimately as a colored person, as
04:22 - 04:23
a person of color
04:24 - 04:29
and a person who has siblings who are black nieces, nephews who are black.
04:29 - 04:33
Um, you know, best friends who are black, it's just kind of like
04:33 - 04:35
one of those things that were already pretty
04:36 - 04:37
near and dear to my heart
04:38 - 04:41
or it was a conversation that's already near and dear to my heart.
04:41 - 04:45
So I think realistically the discussion kind of opened
04:45 - 04:48
me up to be more knowledgeable and less angry.
04:50 - 04:52
Uh, just with knowledge.
04:52 - 04:56
That's where you kind of make the bigger differences I feel, but
04:57 - 05:02
where I was most affected within the conversation was actually the poem by Javon,
05:03 - 05:05
funny enough, that's actually my sister's name.
05:05 - 05:09
Um but and I actually showed her that poem as well.
05:09 - 05:11
Right after class, I sent her the text message like, hey,
05:11 - 05:13
you need to listen to this poem because it was beautiful.
05:13 - 05:15
And it it really did
05:16 - 05:17
uh
05:18 - 05:20
spark an emotion
05:20 - 05:21
in me
05:22 - 05:25
just thinking about
05:25 - 05:26
well,
05:26 - 05:28
all my loved ones in the,
05:29 - 05:32
you know, their biggest crime
05:33 - 05:37
being that they're not white essentially is kind of what it felt like. So
05:38 - 05:39
yeah, that poem really
05:40 - 05:42
actually I cried during the class.
05:42 - 05:46
So that that poem right there definitely opened my eyes up.
05:47 - 05:48
Um
05:49 - 05:54
all in all that entire conversation opened me up to to just be more knowledgeable. So
05:57 - 05:59
mm hmm.
06:00 - 06:04
So after the 30 day positive affirmation challenge,
06:04 - 06:08
I actually saw a change in the way I saw myself.
06:08 - 06:12
I've been working on the views of myself for a very long time.
06:12 - 06:16
I think I've gone through quite a bit in life to feel
06:17 - 06:19
just tired of the negativity.
06:19 - 06:24
I guess I'm very positive, outward, outwardly, but negative
06:24 - 06:30
uh in the inward sense. So the 30 days was something
06:31 - 06:35
that just made me feel open to believing in all of me.
06:35 - 06:39
And not just the little parts that I tend to pick
06:39 - 06:40
um like
06:42 - 06:44
when I define strength, you know, I was like,
06:44 - 06:47
I am strong and that was easy for me to write down.
06:49 - 06:51
But if I were to redefine uh
06:52 - 06:54
if I was to redefine strong,
06:54 - 06:56
it would look a lot different now,
06:57 - 06:59
especially after
06:59 - 07:04
Writing down uh for those 30 days, it
07:04 - 07:06
I think after like the fifth or sixth day,
07:06 - 07:10
I really started to realize how much I didn't have to say about myself
07:11 - 07:12
um
07:13 - 07:15
so after that I just kind of started
07:16 - 07:20
writing down things that I wanted to believe things that I was missing
07:21 - 07:21
and
07:22 - 07:23
so surprisingly
07:24 - 07:29
After those 30 days and the repetition of seeing those words every single day,
07:29 - 07:31
I do actually feel like
07:32 - 07:36
I am loved and I'm wanted and I feel
07:36 - 07:36
uh
07:37 - 07:40
I feel a different type of strength than I did before.
07:41 - 07:41
Mhm
07:42 - 07:45
So yeah, that's kind of how that changed me,
07:45 - 07:47
the next question was what
07:48 - 07:49
um
07:51 - 07:57
what excitement was most challenging and I honestly can say that anything that
07:59 - 08:03
that involves asking yourself questions or asking
08:03 - 08:05
questions about the self that kind of
08:06 - 08:10
it is difficult or having to uh reflect and whatnot,
08:10 - 08:16
it was pretty difficult presentations, I get very nervous, I have
08:16 - 08:21
a shaky voice and there's things that I would like to get better at
08:22 - 08:25
but nonetheless they are difficult because and I,
08:25 - 08:31
I haven't really had that opportunity to better myself in that aspect.
08:31 - 08:35
So definitely the 30 days were hard because I just, I
08:36 - 08:36
waking up
08:37 - 08:37
writing
08:38 - 08:39
something positive about myself
08:40 - 08:41
for 30 days,
08:42 - 08:46
it was pretty like what else, what else you got, you know,
08:46 - 08:50
like I woke up thinking what else can you possibly say about yourself?
08:50 - 08:52
And so then I just started kind of
08:53 - 08:56
like I said, I started just writing things that I wanted to believe about myself.
08:57 - 08:58
Um
08:58 - 09:00
And reflections are just
09:01 - 09:04
they have proven to be difficult. Um
09:05 - 09:09
Because it's really applying my my own opinion and
09:09 - 09:13
just really voicing that And I think my voice
09:14 - 09:18
it's something that I've always had a hard time with when it came down to
09:18 - 09:23
me and like my opinions uh can be protective over others and speak for others.
09:23 - 09:29
But it's been very hard my whole life for me to be able to use the the voice that I have
09:29 - 09:30
mm hmm
09:30 - 09:33
For for me and my opinions and uh
09:33 - 09:35
you know just a voice
09:35 - 09:36
things. Uh And
09:37 - 09:38
I don't know if that makes sense. But
09:39 - 09:41
And yeah, against the presentations. But
09:42 - 09:43
it is something that I want to
09:44 - 09:48
continue to grow better to continue to grow into
09:49 - 09:53
because I would like to be more influential when I speak
09:53 - 09:58
seeing as I hope to be a teacher to be a professor one day. And
09:59 - 09:59
mm hmm
09:59 - 10:01
To be a psychology professor.
10:01 - 10:04
So I think to be able to present and to be influential when I speak,
10:04 - 10:06
it's a pretty big deal.
10:06 - 10:08
Um So yeah
10:11 - 10:12
And
10:13 - 10:18
for my closing thoughts, I simply would like to say thank you.
10:19 - 10:22
I know this class is not over. However,
10:23 - 10:24
the semester is
10:24 - 10:26
coming to a close and if
10:26 - 10:32
uh if I could say anything, it would be just thank you for the value that you have added
10:33 - 10:34
onto my life.
10:35 - 10:37
These chapters and these conversations,
10:37 - 10:41
these discussions and these assignments have really added a lot of value to my life.
10:42 - 10:43
So
10:43 - 10:46
thank you very much and thank you for listening.
