  1. Hi, everyone.
  2. Today we're gonna be talking about the presentation of the
  3. Lord, which is a feast day that is celebrated this
  4. week on February 2nd.
  5. But before we do that, we're going to begin with
  6. a Hail Mary in the name of the Father and
  7. the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  8. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with
  9. thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the
  10. fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
  11. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now
  12. and at the hour of our death.
  13. Amen. Name of the Father and the Son and the
  14. Holy Spirit.
  15. Amen. All right.
  16. So the presentation of the Lord is celebrated on February
  17. 2nd, which is Tuesday of this week.
  18. It's not a holy day of obligation, but it is
  19. kind of important in the life of Jesus.
  20. Which is why we're going to talk about it today.
  21. Um, can kind of see in this picture.
  22. So Mary and Joseph brought Baby Jesus to the temple,
  23. which is their place of worship.
  24. Kind of like way worship God in churches today, Um,
  25. they brought Baby Jesus to the temple, uh, to dedicate
  26. him to the Lord, and and this was a common
  27. practice for Jewish people.
  28. Are for newborn, uh, baby boys that 40 days after
  29. they were born, they would be dedicated to God in
  30. the temple.
  31. And there was also ah, prayer for the mother, a
  32. ZX part of the Jewish ritual to to purify her.
  33. Um, you will notice there are two other people in
  34. this picture, along with Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus.
  35. And those are important characters in this story.
  36. Uh, the man's name is Simeon, and the woman's name
  37. is Anna.
  38. And I said, this is an important event in the
  39. life of Jesus.
  40. We actually, um, consider it one of the joyful mysteries
  41. of the rosary.
  42. So you can see here the five joyful mysteries, uh,
  43. the enunciation.
  44. When Mary found out that she was going to be
  45. the mother of Jesus, the visitation when she visited her
  46. cousin Elizabeth, Um, and Elizabeth's baby left in her womb.
  47. When when she saw Mary knowing that Mary was carrying
  48. Baby Jesus.
  49. The birth of Jesus at Christmas.
  50. We all know that story.
  51. The presentation of the Lord, which we're going to talk
  52. about today.
  53. And then the finding of the child Jesus in the
  54. temple, which I'm gonna mention right at the end of
  55. this This video eso those are the mysteries of the
  56. rosary for the joyful mysteries.
  57. Um, and I hope that each of you has seen
  58. a rosary before and perhaps maybe even have one at
  59. your house.
  60. Um, so, uh, the mysteries of the rosary are what
  61. we're supposed to be thinking about as we pray the
  62. rosary. So as we pray, the rosary were actually reflecting
  63. on the life of Mary and Jesus, a ZX We
  64. pray the prayers.
  65. And then every 10 Hail Marys, we pray an our
  66. father and we announced another mystery.
  67. So the presentation of the Lord is the fourth joyful
  68. mystery. Um, today, since we know that you have a
  69. Bible and we've learned how to look things up in
  70. our Bible, I'm gonna ask your family to look up
  71. this Bible verse.
  72. So it's in the gospel of Luke.
  73. That's the New Testament.
  74. So this will be towards the back of your book.
  75. It will be chapter two versus 22 to 40.
  76. So together, find this verse and read it together.
  77. We're also going to have you answer a few questions
  78. about this story?
  79. Right. Um, I want to point out the very last
  80. verse. Ah, of this story says the child grew and
  81. became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God
  82. was upon him.
  83. We hear one more story about Jesus childhood when he's
  84. 12 years old.
  85. And that would be the fifth joyful mystery where they
  86. find Jesus in the temple.
  87. So Mary and Joseph had traveled to Jerusalem, and then
  88. they started to go back home.
  89. Both realized we don't have Jesus with us.
  90. I thought it was with you.
  91. I thought he was with you.
  92. So they went back and found Jesus in the temple.
  93. Jesus was about 12 years old at that time.
  94. So from the time that Jesus was a baby until
  95. he was 12 years old those the Onley stories we
  96. have about him and then we don't hear about him
  97. again until he's 30 years old.
  98. And when I was a kid, I was always thinking
  99. I would love to know what Jesus was like is
  100. a kid.
  101. Why don't we have more stories from that?
  102. Or even like as a young adult?
  103. Why don't We have stories about what Jesus was like
  104. and what he did or what he said during those
  105. times of his life.
  106. Instead, we only hear about him again when he's 30
  107. years old and, um is baptized by John the Baptist.
  108. That's that's where the story picks up again.
  109. But I will tell you, as an adult, I actually
  110. love what are called these hidden years of Jesus most
  111. of his childhood and then growing up is a teenager
  112. and into adulthood that we don't have these stories of
  113. Jesus. They're called the hidden years of Jesus.
  114. And you know what Jesus did during those years Exactly
  115. what you're doing, exactly what your parents are doing.
  116. He lived a normal life.
  117. He lived a normal life in the home with Mary
  118. and Joseph.
  119. He probably studied.
  120. Um, he learned how to do carpentry from his from
  121. his foster father, Joseph, and he worked.
  122. Hey, did normal stuff.
  123. So when you are going about your normal day, Jesus
  124. knows exactly what that's like, because that's exactly what he
  125. did for his life.
  126. There's something else that we do on the feast of
  127. the presentation of the Lord eso you noticed that Simeon
  128. and Anna in the story recognized who Jesus was, in
  129. fact, Simeon new that Jesus was the Messiah and could
  130. have, like, new so much that he could have called
  131. him the Messiah, though he doesn't in this story.
  132. Ah, lot of people come to recognize who Jesus was
  133. in the Bible.
  134. But some people are given that, um, special hint and
  135. Simeon and Anna to those people because of their life
  136. of prayer.
  137. And they're there.
  138. It even says fasting in the story, uh, their life
  139. of loving God, um, that they were so close to
  140. God that God helped him to recognize who Jesus was
  141. long before a lot of other people, um S o
  142. they recognized Jesus was the Messiah.
  143. And we also talk about Jesus being the light of
  144. the world.
  145. It's one of the reasons that we use a lot
  146. of candles in our worship and in our prayer.
  147. Um, you'll notice that every time we celebrate mass, we
  148. light candles every single time.
  149. We also use a lot of we like candles during
  150. prayer. Think about like the Advent wreath, how we like
  151. candles during during advent as we like the advent candles.
  152. Um, a lot of times we use candles in our
  153. prayer because it reminds us that Jesus is the light
  154. of the world.
  155. He brings light into our dark world, Um, and that
  156. you can come into our hearts and bring light into
  157. our the dark places in our lives too.
  158. Um, So because we use candles in our worship, we
  159. will also bless candles, because when you bless something, you
  160. set it aside for a holy purpose.
  161. We choose to do this on February 2nd as part
  162. of the presentation of Lord, um I think in part
  163. because Simeon and Anna recognized Jesus, um, for the light
  164. that he was bringing.
  165. But in another way, February 2nd is exactly between the
  166. winter solstice, the first day of winter, and the vernal
  167. equinox, which is the first day of spring.
  168. So February is this smack dab center of winter.
  169. And so normally, by this point, at least, your parents
  170. are probably kind of done with winter.
  171. I know kids aren't always.
  172. I'm a snow lover myself.
  173. I could hack a little bit more winter, but, uh,
  174. we are in the middle of the cold in, you
  175. know, it's still not, although our days are getting a
  176. little bit lighter.
  177. There's still a lot of darkness and still get start
  178. kind of early.
  179. But this is the smack dab center of winter.
  180. And so we blessed candles on this day as a
  181. way of reminding ourselves that God is still with us.
  182. We can get through the darkness of winter and anything
  183. else that life throws at us.
  184. Um, but also that the light is coming, not just
  185. the light returning to our days as the days get
  186. longer, but also the light that God brings to our
  187. our darkness and arson.
  188. Um, some of the candles that we bless on the
  189. presentation of Lord, which is also sometimes called Candle, Miss
  190. Day. Because we blessed candles on this day will be
  191. used the very next day for a blessing of throats.
  192. So on February 2nd, we bless the candles.
  193. On February 3rd, we celebrate the feast of ST Blaise
  194. and we take two of these candles and you'll see
  195. that a lot of times they're tied with a red
  196. ribbon. Not always, but sometimes they are because red is
  197. the color of martyrdom, Um, or giving up our lives
  198. for the faith and ST Blaze was a martyr, and
  199. we will use them for blessing of throats.
  200. Eso se blazes feast days, February 3rd, but our parish
  201. because a lot of people can't get to Mass during
  202. weekdays. We also do a blessing of throats on the
  203. Sunday closest eso.
  204. This coming Sunday, February 6th and seventh will be the
  205. blessing of throats at all of our masses at Divine
  206. Mercy Church and everyone will have a chance to go
  207. up and a priest or deacon, we'll put the candles
  208. on either side of your neck.
  209. It doesn't hurt, I promise.
  210. And we'll do a special blessing of the throat because
  211. ST Blazes, the patron saint of Throw Ammons, we're gonna
  212. watch a video about ST Blaise and, um, kind of
  213. why he is the patron saint of throats.
  214. Uh, this this last thing is just kind of a
  215. funny, um, anecdote.
  216. But we also know that February 2nd is Groundhog Day,
  217. right where the grund tells us whether we're gonna have
  218. an early spring or have six more weeks of winter.
  219. But even older than Groundhog Day is this poem about
  220. candle? This day it's actually where groundhog day comes from
  221. it is a candlemas day.
  222. Be fair and bright Winter will have another flight.
  223. But if it But if it be dark with clouds
  224. and rain, winter is gone and will not come again.
  225. So even our traditional Groundhog's Day is based on Candlemas
  226. Day, which I think is pretty funny.
  227. So enjoy the video about state place.
  228. And, um, I encourage you as a family to find
  229. your rosaries and maybe say a decades of the rosary.
  230. Sometime. Maybe we need to do a video on that
  231. as well.
  232. On the rosary.
  233. Thank you.
