00:00 - 00:01
Hello.
00:01 - 00:03
My name is Sasha Derby and I'll be giving
00:03 - 00:06
a short presentation about students in the digital age.
00:06 - 00:10
I gave five students in pre K. A questionnaire.
00:10 - 00:13
I interviewed some teachers and I had a discussion with my cohorts that all led
00:13 - 00:17
me to some interesting findings that I plan to use to improve my teaching.
00:19 - 00:21
Let's get to know the hummingbirds.
00:22 - 00:26
I asked them six questions about these topics.
00:27 - 00:28
Let's talk about
00:29 - 00:30
their responses
00:31 - 00:32
introducing the hummingbirds.
00:34 - 00:39
Most of the students prefer jim or ballet over any other class.
00:42 - 00:44
Most of the students can read letter B,
00:45 - 00:49
one student can read all the letters we've covered so far this year
00:51 - 00:56
three students have older siblings and only two are only Children.
00:58 - 01:03
The Children like to play outside, visit a new place or play with their toys
01:03 - 01:06
and only one student likes to be in front of a screen at home.
01:09 - 01:11
All students have a television at home,
01:11 - 01:15
but all students have at least one other screen in their home as well.
01:19 - 01:22
These are some ways that I can make the students happy when they're feeling sad,
01:22 - 01:24
frustrated or irritated.
01:29 - 01:32
I learned that one of my students actually really enjoys numbers.
01:32 - 01:40
I'll try to incorporate numbers more for him and try to grow that interest in him.
01:41 - 01:44
The majority of the class prefers being in different places and being
01:44 - 01:48
outside of the classroom and playing with toys over watching videos.
01:49 - 01:51
Every student is put in front of a screen other
01:51 - 01:54
than television from time to time when they're at home
01:55 - 01:57
and the last question gave some valuable insight
01:57 - 01:59
into how each child likes to be loved,
01:59 - 02:01
soothed or made to feel safe.
02:04 - 02:06
Now I'll talk about my interviews with the teachers,
02:07 - 02:08
the general gist of the questions
02:09 - 02:13
ah we're how do you feel about technology in the classroom and at home
02:13 - 02:15
and is it a helpful tool for teaching
02:15 - 02:17
english language learners and neuron diverse students.
02:18 - 02:20
Here's what they said.
02:23 - 02:28
Most teachers are given a desktop or a laptop and some are given other
02:28 - 02:30
technology resources as well.
02:32 - 02:36
The majority of them think that more technology resources should
02:36 - 02:39
be made available with only a couple of people disagreeing.
02:41 - 02:45
Everyone thinks that technology is at least somewhat helpful in the classroom.
02:48 - 02:49
It seems to increase
02:51 - 02:53
almost all of these
02:55 - 02:57
areas in a very positive way.
03:05 - 03:10
Most teachers use technology for instruction and for entertainment with only
03:10 - 03:14
a few teachers using it solely for teaching and learning.
03:17 - 03:19
All of the teachers use this
03:20 - 03:23
use technology in order to support language acquisition
03:23 - 03:26
and many of them use lesson plan,
03:26 - 03:29
use technology for lesson planning finding online resources etcetera.
03:30 - 03:32
There were also a few teachers who use
03:32 - 03:36
technology for their students with special needs and
03:36 - 03:38
for a home connection to communicate with the
03:38 - 03:40
parents or to assign and evaluate homework.
03:45 - 03:46
These are some different resources
03:46 - 03:50
that teachers have integrated into their lessons that they find helpful,
03:51 - 03:54
Not a single teacher doesn't use technology at all.
03:56 - 03:57
Overall
03:57 - 04:00
teachers think that technology should be made more available for use,
04:00 - 04:04
it helps most with learning retention and is extremely
04:04 - 04:06
helpful with teaching english as a second language.
04:08 - 04:09
Next, I'll talk about
04:10 - 04:12
the discussion that I had with my cohort,
04:13 - 04:17
we were talking about how to integrate technology for different grades
04:18 - 04:19
for young learners,
04:19 - 04:21
these are some resources that
04:22 - 04:23
were helpful
04:23 - 04:24
for them.
04:26 - 04:29
Third to fifth grade, we use power point games,
04:29 - 04:32
leveled reading and classroom management tools,
04:32 - 04:36
sixth through eighth grade um they're starting to uh
04:37 - 04:38
use this,
04:38 - 04:41
use technology for resources and again for leveled
04:41 - 04:45
reading about the world around them and audiobooks
04:45 - 04:51
and for older learners, it seems like we see a shift more with students producing um
04:52 - 04:54
using technology to produce their
04:54 - 04:58
their own information versus absorbing information
04:59 - 05:01
specifically for english language learners.
05:02 - 05:03
News. Ella
05:03 - 05:07
is seen to be helpful because it has content with five different
05:07 - 05:09
levels of reading and it's specifically
05:09 - 05:13
designed for english language acquisition instruction.
05:13 - 05:17
Other tools to use for english language learners are online translators,
05:17 - 05:18
visual aids and close captions
05:20 - 05:23
for neuro diverse students. Speechify
05:23 - 05:24
was seen to be helpful.
05:25 - 05:27
Um it's a text to speech device that helps
05:27 - 05:30
with students who have reading disabilities or visual impairments.
05:30 - 05:35
We could also use text to speech for those with writing impairments or we could
05:35 - 05:40
allow the students to type if they have poor handwriting or a writing impairment.
05:41 - 05:42
And finally,
05:42 - 05:46
here's how I will use this information to inform my teaching.
05:47 - 05:49
I'll use my students input
05:49 - 05:51
to take note of what they learned from
05:52 - 05:54
what they enjoy about gym and ballet and try
05:54 - 05:58
to incorporate similar activities into my lessons with numbers,
05:58 - 06:00
letters and colors.
06:00 - 06:05
I'll try to incorporate the outdoors and using different settings and reality
06:06 - 06:08
like toys into my lessons
06:09 - 06:11
and I'll remember what the students have said to create
06:11 - 06:14
a happy and fun learning environment for all of them.
06:16 - 06:18
I also plan to incorporate a bit more technology.
06:19 - 06:22
Um they have access to technology,
06:22 - 06:25
we have the computer in the classroom and also tablets,
06:25 - 06:27
phones and our laptops at home
06:27 - 06:31
and because they don't have a huge interest in videos,
06:31 - 06:36
um I could make more use of that time in the classroom uh to
06:36 - 06:41
review things that we've learned and I could also teach through educational games.
06:42 - 06:45
I hope to eventually graduate to at home learning with technology,
06:45 - 06:50
The whole class will play interactive games together and then hopefully
06:50 - 06:53
at home they'll be able to have individual growth and practice.
06:55 - 06:57
These are two resources that I'll use going forward.
06:58 - 07:01
Ah seesaw is a resource that I can search for creative
07:01 - 07:05
ideas and other online resources to keep my lessons fun and engaging
07:06 - 07:08
and we can do activities together as a class
07:09 - 07:13
and teach your monster is a fun game I think that the kids will enjoy.
07:13 - 07:18
Um because the visuals are very engaging and eventually they'll be able to move into
07:18 - 07:22
doing this by themselves in small groups and at home before the year is out.
07:24 - 07:25
Thanks for listening
