  1. Hi, my name is Skyler Latino. My presentation was on firstborn advantages.
  2. Um My question is to those who are not first boring to,
  3. have you ever wondered why your older sibling,
  4. was it better almost everything than you
  5. or a lot of things?
  6. Um and if you're firstborn included, only born,
  7. have you ever wondered why you're very talented in many aspects?
  8. Well, we're gonna find out why.
  9. So why is being the first born so important?
  10. Mhm.
  11. Um although firstborn Children may have
  12. difficulties with their emotions and personalities,
  13. their firstborn child social development gives them
  14. more advantages in life and deal with
  15. shares better compared to their siblings because
  16. they're more likely to have academic success,
  17. have better relationships and have better
  18. mental health than their younger siblings.
  19. Um The reason this is very important is
  20. so that parents can understand that their firstborn child
  21. has a lot of advantages and while it may
  22. seem fair to them sometimes for younger siblings,
  23. they may not have the same
  24. resources and opportunities as these firstborns.
  25. So I just wanted to spread awareness of
  26. why these first born Children have these advantages
  27. academic success.
  28. Um The first or when I was doing my research,
  29. the first thing that I have noticed um with
  30. as an advantage for firstborns
  31. is academic success and this is under the umbrella of
  32. Having higher grades, receiving higher grades,
  33. being accepted into their desired universities,
  34. being accepted into competitive majors, et cetera.
  35. Um there's a study found, but it was done in 1985
  36. that
  37. the reason this is, is because of their intellectual development.
  38. Um
  39. Another university wanted to challenge this and this was more recent,
  40. so it's kind of building off our building,
  41. Building up on their research from 1985.
  42. Um it was two universities done in Europe and they wanted to see how many firstborns
  43. were accepted into two specific universities through their study.
  44. They figured out that
  45. In both universities there were 63.1% and 64.0% of
  46. the university students that were first born Children,
  47. More than half, more than 50
  48. of students that attended this university,
  49. We're firstborns.
  50. Um Also in my research,
  51. I was able to find out that majority of ceos in the country are also firstborn
  52. Children of their families.
  53. Um and the reason is is because typically
  54. companies are handed down through families and so
  55. it's handed to firstborns because of the trust that has been built and their rights.
  56. Um but why do they have academic success?
  57. And some of the reasoning is due to their access to resources.
  58. Um When parents first have there
  59. first child, they are more willing to provide
  60. the means for their child to have success. Um
  61. For example,
  62. there is a commercial going around for I
  63. believe Huggies or one of those um Children's
  64. commercials and
  65. the mother drops the child's binky and this was the first child
  66. and she gets rid of the binky buys a new one,
  67. things like that for the health of the child,
  68. but as she has other Children, she drops it,
  69. she finds a way to clean it and just sticks it back in the mother's mouth.
  70. Um This is the same concept of access to resources,
  71. parents when they are new to something they want
  72. to make sure that they're perfect in it.
  73. So their first child will be the same.
  74. They want to make sure that their child has everything necessary for
  75. success and for opportunities.
  76. Another
  77. another advantage that they have is success in relationships.
  78. So first born Children are else are known to be self conforming,
  79. conforming and self controlled.
  80. Um
  81. a study was done that
  82. Children that showed that firstborn Children reached the stage,
  83. reach the stage of understanding how social cues and abilities work
  84. faster than their siblings, which is honestly logical because they
  85. get older and reach these age
  86. platforms
  87. of when they develop these social cues.
  88. Um so understanding these traits are first born,
  89. help gauge the type of person that they are more likely
  90. to become and how they can handle themselves in social situations.
  91. Um, A person that reflects self
  92. conform or conforming and self control
  93. as well.
  94. Um so that's why she's up there,
  95. but she's the first born and also an only born and she was very poised
  96. and very self control.
  97. Um
  98. Mental health was another advantage,
  99. I won't go into this too in too much detail just because
  100. we are short on time and
  101. but I just wanted to state
  102. that
  103. typically first born Children, If this is a trigger warning, I apologize. Um
  104. First born Children
  105. have or show less signs of suicide or contemplation of suicide
  106. acting on suicide
  107. or signs of it.
  108. Um,
  109. and this could be due to the fact that first
  110. born siblings are less likely to turn to alcohol,
  111. so they are more likely to be able to cope with their mental health issues other
  112. rather than their other symptoms.
  113. Um,
  114. and this is the
  115. difficulty of being a firstborn,
  116. which is not an advantage.
  117. Um, so first born Children are more likely to suffer from eating disorders.
  118. Sorry, again, that's a trigger.
  119. Um, but first born Children are more likely to suffer from eating disorders.
  120. And this is because a study was done to prove sib
  121. ship sib sib ship size birth order and family structure.
  122. Um,
  123. and they just found that
  124. due to a study from Alder,
  125. that in social psychology that first born Children are
  126. more likely to have a problem with their eating.
  127. Um
  128. and when it comes to their emotion of jealousy, if it's regarding a parent
  129. siblings share the same amount of jealousy,
  130. there's
  131. really no advantage for the older sibling
  132. and many more,
  133. but those are just the big two
  134. that weren't an advantage for being a firstborn.
  135. Um, So why is it, why is being a, why being a firstborn matters?
  136. Um, I am not a firstborn. I have
  137. an older brother and I've realized that my whole life has been better at everything.
  138. He has coped with many,
  139. many traumas. He's coped with many
  140. other situations. He's talented in sports, academics, athletics, everything.
  141. And I've always wondered why.
  142. And so because of this, I was able to learn that
  143. first born Children are given more resources and
  144. advantages in life and it is important.
  145. And I wanted to spread awareness for this um to parents or future parents
  146. so that they are able to give the same opportunity to their child,
  147. their second child.
  148. Yeah.
  149. Other Children,
  150. um as equivalent to their firstborn,
  151. so that we can level out the playing field and have
  152. more of a diversity within sub ships and their advantages.
  153. Um Here is my work cited.
  154. Yeah.
  155. Okay,
  156. Thank you all for listening.
