00:00 - 00:01
Hello,
00:01 - 00:02
my name is Gabriella Castro and this will
00:02 - 00:05
be my multimedia presentation for my math project.
00:07 - 00:09
The first thing to go through was the goals that I had in mind.
00:09 - 00:12
My main goal was to improve self advocacy
00:12 - 00:15
and motivation for my students with learning disabilities.
00:15 - 00:17
I wanted to increase their self motivation and
00:17 - 00:20
advocacy by involving them in the assessment process.
00:20 - 00:23
Give them the ability to help shape their goals to motivate them
00:23 - 00:26
to work through their adversities and help with what they need.
00:27 - 00:29
I also wanted to create strategies for students through a 10
00:30 - 00:33
scaffold math lesson that is designed to help the student.
00:35 - 00:37
I worked with three students for this project.
00:37 - 00:40
My first one student m is an eighth grade male.
00:41 - 00:45
He was quiet, reserved, no real negative behaviors and was not disruptive.
00:46 - 00:48
He lived with his grandmother and had a low attendance rate.
00:49 - 00:53
But I noticed that he loved to draw in his free time and was constantly doodling
00:54 - 00:55
when comfortable with the material.
00:55 - 00:58
He stayed on task and completed assignments in a timely manner.
01:00 - 01:03
The areas of growth was I wanted to replace it,
01:03 - 01:06
adverse behavior of doodling and not focusing to
01:06 - 01:09
challenging material to be a more productive one.
01:10 - 01:12
And I also wanted to improve his collaboration with peers.
01:15 - 01:18
My second student student h is an eighth grade female.
01:18 - 01:20
She is eccentric and a bubbly personality.
01:20 - 01:23
Someone that'll run up to you across the hall to give you a hug.
01:23 - 01:27
She lives with her father who works night shifts and with her stepmother,
01:27 - 01:32
she lacks certain social cues which causes issues with her teachers and peers.
01:32 - 01:35
And sometimes she is bullied and sometimes she speaks out
01:35 - 01:38
when she's not supposed to and runs around the classroom.
01:38 - 01:39
If she gets distracted,
01:39 - 01:42
her strength, she is able to help when confused
01:43 - 01:44
and ask for help,
01:44 - 01:48
when needed and she does work good when assigned to collaborate with others.
01:48 - 01:51
I want to improve the patience that she has ne she needs
01:51 - 01:56
to attempt her tasks and to the issues of fidgeting and walking around
01:56 - 01:58
when she has difficulties.
02:01 - 02:05
My third student is student a she is an eighth grade female.
02:05 - 02:07
She's very soft spoken and quiet.
02:07 - 02:12
She does have a good job of staying on tasks though she does get easily distracted.
02:12 - 02:17
She loves to read and sometimes while that is good in some instances,
02:17 - 02:21
she does have the tendency to read at inappropriate times such
02:21 - 02:23
as note taking and when we're supposed to do assignments,
02:24 - 02:28
I want to improve her self advocacy skills and help her work with her
02:28 - 02:32
teacher and peer and peers more often and to help with note taking.
02:36 - 02:37
My reasoning for the assessment,
02:38 - 02:40
I put the assessment into three parts.
02:40 - 02:43
The first thing I wanted to focus on was the students self assessment.
02:44 - 02:47
I wanted their viewpoint and opinions on both how they see
02:47 - 02:50
education and the support system is already currently in place.
02:51 - 02:53
I also wanted to track their behaviors.
02:53 - 02:56
I tracked their behaviors during lessons and independent work
02:57 - 02:58
because I felt like
02:58 - 03:03
the way they saw what was going on in class would also affect their behavior.
03:03 - 03:06
And I wanted to assess their knowledge on the material at hand.
03:07 - 03:09
The reason I wanted to do this was I wanted to build
03:09 - 03:13
a mentality of self advocacy by involving them in the assessment process.
03:14 - 03:15
Behavior
03:15 - 03:18
I believe is a non verbal reflection of their opinion of academia
03:18 - 03:20
and understand their current knowledge.
03:24 - 03:28
This was the first of three pre assessments that I did with the students.
03:28 - 03:32
The first one was their self assessment where I asked them questions.
03:32 - 03:35
Like, what do you think of math? Do you like to have difficult problems?
03:35 - 03:37
Do you like word problems?
03:37 - 03:41
And how do you feel you're meeting your current goals and
03:41 - 03:45
how you feel your teachers and peers are helping you?
03:50 - 03:52
The second one I would track was their behavior.
03:52 - 03:57
I track these during lessons and when the teacher was presenting and
03:57 - 04:01
when we were working on assignments in a tutoring setting as well,
04:01 - 04:04
I used an average to get these results.
04:07 - 04:09
This was the relation I had between the two
04:09 - 04:13
I noticed that they scored a little bit lower on their self reflection.
04:14 - 04:17
But the the ones that scored lower had a higher behavior issues.
04:23 - 04:25
This was the assessment on their knowledge of the
04:25 - 04:28
material and was the foundation of how I can
04:28 - 04:32
see how the, what we implement affects them in the future.
04:35 - 04:37
The lesson plan that I did was I did,
04:37 - 04:41
I started first with the scaffolding of modeling starting with I DOS
04:42 - 04:44
I explicitly modeled what the students were expected to do.
04:45 - 04:48
And I conducted think alongs while they were modeling
04:48 - 04:50
the steps to complete and perform the activity.
04:51 - 04:53
I modeled the use of organizing content and
04:53 - 04:55
showcasing the steps to complete a problem.
04:56 - 04:58
And I used questioning techniques such as prompting,
04:58 - 05:00
giving a pause to allow students to answer
05:00 - 05:04
and redirecting incorrect answers toward correct answers.
05:05 - 05:07
I then moved on to the we do or the guided practice.
05:08 - 05:09
I directed them towards indirect,
05:09 - 05:12
which was the segue towards independent practice.
05:13 - 05:16
My goal was to bring the class into small groups to collaborate.
05:16 - 05:18
I promoted collaborative thinking and
05:18 - 05:21
communication and encouraged students to delegate
05:21 - 05:23
roles in the group that are tailored to each student's strength.
05:24 - 05:27
And then I while they did that, I performed checks for understanding.
05:29 - 05:31
I then went on for independent practice where
05:31 - 05:33
I signed them independent work for them to do
05:34 - 05:35
one on one
05:35 - 05:39
and use the materials that we had learned prior to class to implement now.
05:39 - 05:43
And I use this to, to provide one on one individual support
05:44 - 05:46
materials that I used to help with.
05:46 - 05:49
Scaffolding was visual aids such as charts and graphs that provided key
05:49 - 05:52
information to solve the problem assistive
05:52 - 05:55
technology such as calculators and manipulatives.
05:55 - 05:56
And by modeling,
06:00 - 06:02
another goal I wanted was to incorporate a diverse culture
06:03 - 06:04
and language.
06:04 - 06:08
I incorporated students in the planning process to increase involvement.
06:08 - 06:11
I created groups to build relationships between students
06:12 - 06:15
and I became more involved on one on one work with the students
06:16 - 06:20
and I worked on having a sense of community and teamwork with our goal
06:21 - 06:25
and also incorporating real world connections to materials
06:28 - 06:33
for Ells. How I would incorporate this teaching ways to simplify word problems.
06:34 - 06:38
So highlighting and focusing on what's important in
06:38 - 06:40
the word problem itself to answer the question.
06:41 - 06:43
Uh Focus on teaching math vocabulary
06:43 - 06:46
promote working alongside peers that are both ell and
06:46 - 06:50
non ell create study material that provides more visuals
06:50 - 06:53
to show the full breakdown of each step and
06:53 - 06:55
offer fill in the blank options with word banks.
07:00 - 07:01
Um
07:01 - 07:03
Through my reflection, I had the realization
07:04 - 07:08
of the students were missing core strategies such as note,
07:08 - 07:11
taking ways to focus and using the tools that they had
07:11 - 07:13
a lot of the times I would have to remind them
07:13 - 07:17
to use their calculator and remind them to use the manipulatives.
07:17 - 07:20
It's it wasn't intuitive to use the materials they already had.
07:21 - 07:21
Um
07:22 - 07:24
I realized the value of input
07:25 - 07:26
the students had
07:26 - 07:28
and able to challenge them
07:29 - 07:30
by modeling
07:31 - 07:34
the transition to guided practice and interpretive practice.
07:34 - 07:36
It boosted the student's confidence and
07:36 - 07:39
allowed control over the speed of transition
07:39 - 07:40
to each student.
07:41 - 07:45
So working in these groups and starting off as a guided practice to independent,
07:45 - 07:48
I liked the ability to
07:48 - 07:53
judge more from the students input than what just had to be done in a certain time.
07:54 - 07:57
And I feel everything improved collaboration
07:57 - 07:58
and communication skills to the students,
07:58 - 08:03
both with me as a, as an educator and them as peers.
08:06 - 08:09
This was the post assessment from the student.
08:09 - 08:14
I noticed there was a large increase in how they viewed math in a more positive light.
08:18 - 08:22
And this is the post assessment of their behavior.
08:22 - 08:25
There was a decrease in negative behaviors
08:29 - 08:31
and this is how it relates
08:31 - 08:32
on the chart
08:33 - 08:34
I noticed
08:40 - 08:43
and this is the assessment on their knowledge for student.
08:43 - 08:47
M there was an increase of three extra masteries along with student H who had
08:47 - 08:51
an increase of three masteries and student a had an increase of two masteries.
08:53 - 08:59
With this analysis. Student M I view was viewed self and support increase
08:59 - 09:02
the negative behaviors increase instead of being replaced with more peer
09:02 - 09:06
interaction and altogether higher rate of participation in the class.
09:06 - 09:10
Student h had a more moderate decrease in negative behaviors,
09:10 - 09:13
increasing in ability to focus and direct energy in more effective ways.
09:15 - 09:19
And student a hobbies and likes outside the classroom were used to
09:19 - 09:23
motivate current task and there is an increase in interacting with peers
09:28 - 09:29
altogether. My final thoughts,
09:30 - 09:32
engaging students in goal settings,
09:32 - 09:34
involving their opinions and feedback and learning process.
09:34 - 09:36
There was shown to be an increase in positive
09:36 - 09:39
relationship with math and an increase in involvement,
09:40 - 09:44
focusing on improving the ways kids learn and apply their information,
09:44 - 09:46
increases their mastery of the subject.
09:46 - 09:49
And I also learned that scaffolding is a valuable
09:49 - 09:52
tool that helps students who may have negative impressions
09:52 - 09:54
or fears of a certain subject while giving them
09:54 - 09:56
the tools they can use outside the classroom.
10:00 - 10:02
That was my presentation. Thank you for watching.
