00:00 - 00:02
With Thanksgiving and praise and worship.
00:03 - 00:05
We pray, Lord that you would bless us.
00:05 - 00:10
Um As we look into your word, we help ask that you imprint it on our hearts. Lord
00:11 - 00:13
and all, all God's people said,
00:14 - 00:15
man,
00:16 - 00:17
Amen.
00:18 - 00:22
Does anyone have an idea what Amen means in the Bible
00:23 - 00:26
when we finish our prayers? Why do we say Amen
00:27 - 00:28
in some churches?
00:28 - 00:32
When a pastor sits up here, he says anything that the congregation likes,
00:32 - 00:34
they shout out Amen.
00:34 - 00:38
It's such a simple word and I think we've gotten so accustomed to it.
00:39 - 00:41
It's lost its meaning in a lot of ways.
00:42 - 00:45
It's just kind of what you say in certain situations.
00:45 - 00:49
It's like if you pass somebody in the street, you say, how are you?
00:50 - 00:54
Standard response? Oh, I'm good. I'm doing well. Thanks. How are you?
00:55 - 00:55
That's
00:55 - 00:58
not really what we mean, is it maybe sometimes,
00:58 - 01:02
but a lot of times it has nothing to do with whether we're actually good or not.
01:02 - 01:03
We just say we're good.
01:04 - 01:06
Do you actually care about the random stri stranger
01:06 - 01:08
in the street that you cross when you say,
01:08 - 01:10
how are you, are you really wanting to hear how they are.
01:13 - 01:14
Do we actually care how they're doing?
01:15 - 01:16
I think most of the time
01:17 - 01:20
we don't. It's just what you say in that moment. It's what we've been taught.
01:20 - 01:25
It's how we learn what is rude or not rude. What good manners are?
01:25 - 01:30
Amen can kind of turn into that. It's just what you say at the appropriate time
01:31 - 01:33
as I was starting to do this,
01:34 - 01:38
I was looking at all these different kind of cool pictures of the word Amen.
01:39 - 01:41
I even had Julie looking at a few of them.
01:41 - 01:46
And after thinking about it, of what one to kind of put up there. That would be cool.
01:46 - 01:51
I thought this one was maybe the most appropriate for how we treat this word dull,
01:51 - 01:55
pointless, so plain that you might just pass it over.
01:56 - 01:57
So what is Amen?
01:58 - 02:00
Does it deserve to be talked about? Even
02:01 - 02:03
if you noticed last week that where I
02:03 - 02:07
finished up wasn't actually where verse six ends.
02:07 - 02:09
We ended with this
02:09 - 02:12
to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his
02:12 - 02:16
blood and made us a kingdom priest to his God and father to him,
02:17 - 02:20
be glory and Dominion forever and ever.
02:20 - 02:22
That's where we left it
02:22 - 02:27
according to I think basically all translations though verse six ends
02:27 - 02:30
with one more word that I didn't include last week,
02:30 - 02:32
the word Amen.
02:33 - 02:33
But
02:33 - 02:35
the reason I didn't include it is because it
02:35 - 02:38
really should be at the beginning of verse seven.
02:40 - 02:42
So that's where we're gonna start today.
02:42 - 02:45
What should be the start of Revelation one verse seven?
02:46 - 02:47
And that is
02:47 - 02:48
Amen.
02:50 - 02:55
I'm sure when you read Revelation One you probably just skimmed right over the Amens
02:56 - 02:58
to get to the kind of more meteor parts, right?
02:59 - 03:02
It's OK. Every commentary I read even did the same thing.
03:02 - 03:08
None of them that I looked at talked about. Amen at all, but God puts it there.
03:08 - 03:09
So it must mean something,
03:10 - 03:12
maybe it's just something small
03:12 - 03:16
even then it would be important. But I think it means more than that.
03:16 - 03:18
So what does Amen mean?
03:19 - 03:23
Many of us have been taught? I think that it simply means so be it.
03:24 - 03:27
But I think if we dig in it's actually more than that,
03:27 - 03:30
it means it's firm or true,
03:30 - 03:33
but we will learn today. It's deeper even than that.
03:34 - 03:35
So first off,
03:36 - 03:39
guess how many Amens there are in revelation?
03:41 - 03:42
Anybody wanna take a guess
03:44 - 03:45
you'd think seven, right?
03:46 - 03:47
And there might be.
03:47 - 03:52
But actually there's a lot of debate about the Amens in the Bible in, in
03:52 - 03:57
revelation here as to how many there actually are different manuscripts,
03:57 - 03:58
say different things.
03:58 - 04:01
Some have as many as 10 in there.
04:01 - 04:04
Many of the modern day Bibles that we have.
04:04 - 04:06
They say that there's nine in there,
04:08 - 04:11
there's even a few other more obscure translations
04:11 - 04:13
that have seven or eight in there.
04:14 - 04:15
So
04:15 - 04:19
if you get rid of the ones that have a lot of textual manuscript
04:20 - 04:22
uh questions about them,
04:22 - 04:24
there are most likely
04:24 - 04:25
seven
04:26 - 04:30
which based on all the other sevens in the book that we keep seeing would make sense.
04:31 - 04:35
And even if there are more, they're used differently than these core seven,
04:35 - 04:38
I'll give you a little example of kind of what's going on here
04:39 - 04:40
to show what I mean.
04:40 - 04:44
So I'll tell you a sentence, say something like this.
04:44 - 04:47
The shepherd took care of lots of cattle and
04:47 - 04:50
one cow one night figured out how to escape
04:51 - 04:53
or another sentence,
04:53 - 04:57
one teenage cow was trying to jump out the window of
04:57 - 05:00
his parents' house to go hang out with all his cattle friends
05:01 - 05:01
or
05:02 - 05:06
one cow was extra angry with Deborah for not leaving him alone.
05:06 - 05:10
So he gently tried to show her the way to the rest of the cattle
05:10 - 05:11
or
05:11 - 05:12
one more.
05:12 - 05:16
Bessie. The cow was so tired of the rest of the cattles moving.
05:16 - 05:19
He jumped over the gate and was never seen from him again.
05:20 - 05:22
Ok? I have one last one here.
05:23 - 05:28
I was driving down the street when the car in front of me, hit a tire and flew in the air
05:28 - 05:33
and crashed right down in front of me. And I yelled holy cow.
05:35 - 05:40
Every one of these sentences that I just read has the word cow in them.
05:41 - 05:44
So they must all belong to the same category, right?
05:44 - 05:49
Are they all talking about a large animal that produces milk and gives us juicy steak
05:50 - 05:55
or is one here despite being the exact same word cow that's used,
05:55 - 05:57
not talking about an animal at all.
05:57 - 06:00
The word cow is used in all of these sentences,
06:00 - 06:03
but they're not all talking about cows in the same way.
06:03 - 06:06
This is how the amens in revelation are.
06:08 - 06:11
There are seven for sure supposed to be in the tax amens
06:11 - 06:15
that all are in the same specific context that we're gonna get to.
06:15 - 06:17
We're gonna talk about in a little bit
06:17 - 06:20
the rest, even if they are supposed to be in the text,
06:20 - 06:22
which like I said is debatable to begin with
06:23 - 06:25
the seven that are there for sure.
06:25 - 06:26
They're just,
06:26 - 06:28
these other extra ones are descriptive
06:28 - 06:31
rather than interjections or exclamations.
06:31 - 06:36
So they're used completely differently like the word cow was in that last sentence.
06:38 - 06:43
So if we look ahead to verse 18, what do most of your Bibles say in revelation? One?
06:44 - 06:49
If we read the King James, it says this revelation 1, 18, I am he that liveth
06:49 - 06:53
and was dead and behold, I am alive forever more. Amen
06:53 - 06:56
and have the keys of hell and hate and of death.
06:56 - 07:00
If we look at the ESB or many other modern translations,
07:00 - 07:06
we get this same exact verse says and the living one I died and behold,
07:06 - 07:09
I am alive forevermore and I have the keys of death and Hades.
07:10 - 07:11
No. Amen.
07:11 - 07:14
It doesn't seem to belong in this verse both in context and
07:14 - 07:17
repeated patterns of how this word is used in the Bible.
07:17 - 07:19
That again, we're gonna look at shortly
07:19 - 07:21
is specifically in revelation.
07:22 - 07:24
So the ESB for example, leaves it out here.
07:25 - 07:26
So
07:26 - 07:28
erase it from your memories completely
07:29 - 07:30
because I don't think it should be there in that one.
07:32 - 07:37
At the end of revelation. We have another questionable amen. In the text.
07:37 - 07:40
In revelation 22 we read this.
07:40 - 07:46
He who testifies to these things says Shirly I coming soon, amen called Lord Jesus.
07:46 - 07:47
So we have an Amen there.
07:47 - 07:50
Then we read the next verse and it says the
07:50 - 07:54
grace of the Lord Jesus be with all amen again.
07:54 - 07:55
Why is it repeated?
07:55 - 07:57
What does it mean there?
07:57 - 08:03
It doesn't seem to have much meaning in that place and it is almost never found in any
08:03 - 08:07
of the end of the letters of any epistles that you see in the New Testament Galatians,
08:07 - 08:10
I think is the only one that actually ends in Amen.
08:10 - 08:11
All the other ones don't do that.
08:12 - 08:15
Um Normally the letters in the New Testament.
08:15 - 08:19
If we had revelation here as just another letter in the New Testament,
08:19 - 08:24
it would end like the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all period.
08:25 - 08:30
So here at the end of a revelation, some translations have this amen and in the book,
08:30 - 08:32
but this doesn't seem to belong.
08:32 - 08:37
It may and I'm not gonna fight anybody about it. It, but it doesn't seem to fit
08:37 - 08:38
and then when you take into account,
08:38 - 08:41
the original manuscript evidence that I mentioned,
08:41 - 08:43
it's dicey at best that the Amen should be there.
08:43 - 08:46
I'm not gonna bore you with that. I should have done a fire hose here.
08:46 - 08:48
I'm not gonna turn on the fire hoses again, but
08:49 - 08:51
it doesn't seem to belong there.
08:51 - 08:53
So those two that we just looked at don't seem to belong and
08:53 - 08:58
that leaves us in most translations with seven that do seem to belong.
08:58 - 09:01
These don't have any textual questions about them.
09:01 - 09:05
So I'd like to look at those seven now real quick and see how they're used.
09:05 - 09:09
So the first two are in our verse today. Revelation 17,
09:10 - 09:15
it says, Amen, behold, he is coming with the clouds and every eye will see him,
09:15 - 09:20
even those who pierce him, all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him even so.
09:20 - 09:21
Amen.
09:23 - 09:25
So this says, it is a sure thing
09:26 - 09:27
that Jesus is coming.
09:27 - 09:32
The Amen is associated with the coming of Christ.
09:32 - 09:36
So what does Amen mean in the Bible? And especially in revelation?
09:37 - 09:41
The answer to that is actually in revelation 3 14,
09:42 - 09:46
revelation 3 14 says and to the angel of the church in Leo de,
09:46 - 09:49
right? The words of the Amen,
09:49 - 09:53
the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.
09:53 - 09:58
Amen means it is faithful and true. You can count on it. It's firm.
09:59 - 10:05
Jesus is the Amen because he is the faithful and true witness.
10:05 - 10:10
A lot of time churches yell out amen when they like something or it feels good,
10:10 - 10:12
but that's not what it means in Hebrew.
10:12 - 10:16
In the original Hebrew. It's more like an oath. I swear.
10:16 - 10:20
This is so what I'm telling you, I promise is the truth
10:21 - 10:25
to me. This connects us with the name of God that we talked about. Last week.
10:25 - 10:27
I am that I am
10:27 - 10:32
or like we saw it translated in a way in the Greek last week, he is who was,
10:32 - 10:34
who is and who is to come
10:34 - 10:38
because of who God is. Everything he says
10:38 - 10:43
that will happen must because I am that I am.
10:43 - 10:47
The Amen here is similar, Jesus is faithful and true.
10:47 - 10:51
So in revelation, it has to come to be amen.
10:51 - 10:56
I attest to it being true, it will come to pass. Amen.
10:58 - 11:00
This occurrence in revelation three here,
11:01 - 11:06
the word Amen is actually not one of the seven because no one is actually saying Amen.
11:06 - 11:11
It's not an exclamation here. They're attributing it to Jesus almost like a name.
11:12 - 11:15
Like when we said holy cow before,
11:15 - 11:18
it's not in the same context even though it's the same word.
11:19 - 11:20
So
11:21 - 11:22
it is important though.
11:22 - 11:28
And this gives us partially a meaning and a framework to understand the other.
11:28 - 11:31
Amen because Jesus is the amen.
11:32 - 11:33
So if we go back
11:34 - 11:35
to our words
11:35 - 11:40
and we reread the first two amens in this context, now,
11:40 - 11:41
I think it makes even more sense.
11:42 - 11:45
Revelation 17 with the kind of
11:45 - 11:49
um meaning of Amen. It would say it is faithful and true.
11:49 - 11:52
Behold, he is coming with the clouds and every eye will see him,
11:52 - 11:55
even those who pierced him and all tribes of the earth will whale
11:55 - 12:00
or mourn on account of him even so it is faithful and true.
12:01 - 12:03
So those are the first two. Amen.
12:04 - 12:05
The next amen
12:05 - 12:08
is in revelation five. I have to skip ahead a few chapters.
12:08 - 12:12
It says, and the four living creatures said amen.
12:12 - 12:14
And the elders fell down and worshiped.
12:15 - 12:18
They keep saying it's faithful and true. Amen. Amen.
12:19 - 12:22
This is an amen to the rule of Jesus.
12:22 - 12:23
We have to back up a little bit,
12:23 - 12:27
a couple of verses in revelation five to see the context of what's going on.
12:27 - 12:28
But it becomes pretty clear.
12:28 - 12:31
I think revelations 5, 12 through 13 says,
12:31 - 12:34
saying with a loud voice worthy is the lamb who
12:34 - 12:37
is slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom and,
12:37 - 12:39
and honor and glory and blessing.
12:39 - 12:42
And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under
12:42 - 12:45
the earth and in the sea and all that is in them saying
12:45 - 12:47
to him who sits on the throne and to the lamb
12:47 - 12:51
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever.
12:51 - 12:55
And then we get to the verse 14 and the four living creatures said, amen.
12:56 - 12:59
This is an amen to the rule of Christ.
13:00 - 13:04
The first Amens. We read, it's faithful and true that he's coming on the clouds.
13:05 - 13:06
I'm jumping ahead,
13:06 - 13:07
but we're gonna find out in a few minutes that
13:07 - 13:11
Jesus is coming on the clouds to receive the kingdom
13:11 - 13:16
that coming on the clouds is the ascension of Jesus to the father.
13:16 - 13:18
Here in revelation five,
13:18 - 13:21
Jesus has come to the father and he's received that kingdom.
13:21 - 13:23
He rules, he has the kingdom.
13:24 - 13:26
So the elders are proclaiming
13:26 - 13:27
amen.
13:28 - 13:33
Next up for the Amens is the next one we see is revelation seven.
13:34 - 13:35
It says, saying, Amen,
13:35 - 13:38
blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and
13:38 - 13:42
power and might be to our God forever and ever.
13:42 - 13:43
Amen.
13:44 - 13:47
In this saying, we also have two amens.
13:47 - 13:50
These are the 4th and 5th ones, all in this verse
13:51 - 13:54
which also support our verse seven today that
13:54 - 13:56
we're talking about in chapter one that,
13:56 - 14:00
that should and can also contain both Amens in one verse,
14:00 - 14:04
not as the ending to verse six and then the ending to verse seven separately.
14:04 - 14:06
But they should be together in verse seven.
14:07 - 14:12
Here in revelation seven, we see these two amens bracketing once again,
14:12 - 14:17
seven things, blessing, glory, wisdom, thanks, giving honor, power and might.
14:18 - 14:22
These seven things are given to God on the throne with the lamb.
14:22 - 14:24
So what is this an amen of
14:24 - 14:26
in the context of chapter seven?
14:27 - 14:29
It's that Jesus rules again,
14:29 - 14:34
he comes to the father and he rules, that's what the faithful witness and amen.
14:34 - 14:36
Is all about in the Book of Revelation.
14:37 - 14:43
The next amen is towards the end of revelation revelation 19 4 and says,
14:43 - 14:45
and the 24 elders and the four living creatures
14:45 - 14:47
fell down and worshiped God who were see,
14:47 - 14:50
who was seated on the throne saying amen.
14:50 - 14:51
Hallelujah.
14:52 - 14:55
So this is right after the judgment of the Harlot.
14:57 - 14:59
So Jesus has come, he is judged.
