00:15 - 00:17
So as you guys know, blog posts have become our
00:17 - 00:18
communications bread and butter.
00:18 - 00:21
And as I've already mentioned, we published over 110 original
00:22 - 00:23
pieces on our two websites this year.
00:24 - 00:26
So even though we're moving the digest to a quarterly
00:26 - 00:29
schedule, the need for this kind of original content doesn't
00:29 - 00:32
dissipate. Um, we'll be continuing with the monthly brainstorming sessions
00:33 - 00:35
and Monica is going to remain available to anybody who
00:35 - 00:37
needs support in writing and publishing their pieces.
00:39 - 00:43
Staff produced a number of original videos this year, including
00:44 - 00:45
this one, which is an interview with the mayor of
00:46 - 00:50
Melbourne pennsylvania, who championed for a land value tax in
00:50 - 00:52
his town, talks about that experience and then talks about
00:53 - 00:55
the on the ground effects that happened after it was
00:55 - 00:57
implemented. Uh looking forward.
00:57 - 00:59
I actually think that videos are going to become a
00:59 - 01:01
more significant part of the work that we're doing.
01:01 - 01:05
They allow us to reach different audiences who might not
01:06 - 01:08
take the time to read a longer written piece, but
01:08 - 01:10
will read a, you know, or will watch a short
01:10 - 01:12
video so we're probably going to be doing more videos
01:13 - 01:14
in the coming year.
01:15 - 01:18
Okay. The final area of focus in our plan is
01:18 - 01:19
research and education.
01:21 - 01:24
So our in house research is conducted through the center
01:25 - 01:27
um and a lot of it is visible to the
01:27 - 01:27
public through our G.
01:28 - 01:28
I. S.
01:28 - 01:30
Tools, the tax shift explorer and the new york city
01:30 - 01:31
vacant land maps.
01:31 - 01:34
Um We've also, as I mentioned, recently hired our first
01:34 - 01:35
part time researcher.
01:35 - 01:37
And what that position is going to let us do
01:38 - 01:41
is really to expand our focus beyond the sort of
01:41 - 01:45
applied uh notions of land value tax to some of
01:45 - 01:49
the more related but peripheral issues like racial equity and
01:49 - 01:52
assessment. So I think that that's a big step forward
01:52 - 01:56
for us and I'm excited about it mm in fiscal
01:56 - 02:00
20 and 21 so sort of spanning the change of
02:00 - 02:03
fiscal years, we support pro jesus christ.
02:06 - 02:08
So at the end of fiscal 20 and beginning of
02:09 - 02:12
fiscal 21, we granted some grants to uh three.
02:17 - 02:19
So at the end of fiscal 20 we made some
02:19 - 02:22
research grants um to three individuals, Michael guten tag allure
02:23 - 02:24
Raymond and Rocco rue Bellini.
02:24 - 02:28
Um and their work was actually probably not surprisingly delayed
02:29 - 02:29
by the pandemic.
02:30 - 02:32
So we were hoping to get their deliverables which are,
02:33 - 02:35
uh, each of them will host a virtual event about
02:36 - 02:38
their research and also provide us with a blog post.
02:38 - 02:39
We hope to get those this year.
02:40 - 02:42
Everything was delayed, which I guess is understandable.
02:43 - 02:45
Um, and so we're now anticipating getting all of that
02:46 - 02:46
next year.
02:46 - 02:50
Um, the program committee in the past year didn't make
02:50 - 02:53
a huge number of new grants, but they did make
02:53 - 02:56
a very important decision which is to move our grant
02:56 - 03:00
making activities from a relatively um sort of unstructured Approach
03:01 - 03:04
to one that relies on twice a year RFP processes.
03:05 - 03:08
And so our hope is that that is going to
03:08 - 03:11
allow us to attract a wide variety of researchers because
03:11 - 03:13
we'll be able to better promote these opportunities.
03:14 - 03:17
Um and we really are looking at the Prosper Australia
03:17 - 03:22
model um to potentially um replicate here, which is essentially
03:23 - 03:27
bringing in external researchers and then um presenting their findings
03:28 - 03:32
in a sort of um branded and promoted by the
03:32 - 03:33
Foundation kind of way.
03:33 - 03:36
So I think that's gonna in addition to our new
03:37 - 03:38
research position, that's going to help us to really expand
03:39 - 03:40
what we're doing in the area of new research.
03:42 - 03:45
Okay, so this year we did a lot of prep
03:45 - 03:47
work related to the new scholarship program that we're building.
03:48 - 03:51
Um We actually expect that the first beneficiaries, meaning the
03:51 - 03:54
first recipients are going to be in the fall of
03:55 - 03:58
2022 which is actually fiscal 23 for us.
03:59 - 04:00
So if you look at our budget, you'll see that
04:01 - 04:03
the funds that are allocated really are for this planning
04:03 - 04:05
phase. Um We also have to get I.
04:05 - 04:05
R. S.
04:05 - 04:06
Approval to make these grants.
04:07 - 04:09
Um and I know that matt's already spoken about this,
04:09 - 04:11
so I'm just going to leave it at that.
04:11 - 04:14
But scholarships are exciting new area for us and something
04:14 - 04:17
we're going to be focused a lot on in the
04:17 - 04:17
coming years.
04:19 - 04:21
All right, so looking forward, I think that this coming
04:22 - 04:24
year is going to be a really interesting one for
04:24 - 04:26
us and hopefully a really successful one.
04:26 - 04:28
Um Some of our efforts are really going to start
04:29 - 04:31
to bear fruit for the first time as we have
04:31 - 04:34
been in the process of sort of retooling what the
04:34 - 04:37
foundation does and we're now at a moment where we're
04:37 - 04:39
doing that work and we're going to start seeing the
04:39 - 04:42
results. Um I think it's very opportune that we've changed
04:43 - 04:46
to a project based budget structure again, because that allows
04:46 - 04:50
all of us myself included to really understand where our
04:51 - 04:52
resources are going in support of our priorities.
04:53 - 04:55
And I think that that's important and I think the
04:55 - 04:58
sort of companion piece of looking at our policies and
04:59 - 05:02
um trying to make sure that they're appropriately flexible is
05:03 - 05:05
going to just help us do even more in this
05:05 - 05:10
coming year and then the years ahead, I also want
05:10 - 05:13
to say that just like last year where um June
05:13 - 05:16
of 2020, we didn't really know where we'd be in
05:16 - 05:18
June of 21, which is right now.
05:18 - 05:22
Um we're probably looking at a really exciting and somewhat
05:22 - 05:23
unpredictable year to come.
05:24 - 05:27
Um, so when we come back for the next board
05:27 - 05:30
meeting and I do a presentation like this again, um
05:30 - 05:32
I'm I'm looking forward to seeing all the good things
05:33 - 05:34
that I'll be able to talk to you about that
05:35 - 05:35
we've accomplished.
05:38 - 05:40
So when I thank you all for a really wonderful
05:40 - 05:43
year, um this board has been extremely dedicated to the
05:44 - 05:44
work of the Foundation.
05:45 - 05:48
Um each of you has spent your own time and
05:48 - 05:51
talents to make sure that we're realizing our mission and
05:51 - 05:53
the staff and I greatly appreciate that.
05:53 - 05:56
Um I also really appreciate the opportunity to lead this
05:56 - 05:58
organization. It's a lot of fun.
05:58 - 06:01
It's a big challenge, um, but overall it's a great
06:02 - 06:03
experience. So thank you.
