  1. This is the We can do it poster.
  2. And I am Very So the original purpose of the
  3. poster was to motivate ah women working in the Westinghouse
  4. factory. But I struck factory, uh, was taken down by
  5. the bosses because they, after two weeks of the close
  6. and effective and was gonna do anything painted by J
  7. Hard Miller in 1942.
  8. Then later in 1943 it was, uh, Norman.
  9. And then in 1943 the is it another version of
  10. Rose. A visitor appeared on the Saturday Evening Post by
  11. Norman Rockwell.
  12. No. So then the forces behind the poster was made
  13. after the women's suffrage in 1920.
  14. So, uh, women had worked in the factories during World
  15. War? Well, ah, majority of the men were were, uh,
  16. hiding in the war.
  17. Hey, uh, they were fighting on the home front, working
  18. in factories and munitions, making stuff like that.
  19. And so they protesters have not voting rights.
  20. And, uh, and so the world had already seen the
  21. power of female work for war force.
  22. Um, so they saw how effective that was during World
  23. War one, and, uh, one of the main reasons that
  24. the U.
  25. S. Government, uh, spread the poster around and used it
  26. because they needed more workers.
  27. They already had workers from the lower costs, the working
  28. class, they middle class.
  29. And I need toe convince, uh, women to leave their
  30. like Children.
  31. Families could before 1940 a lot of women had solely
  32. worked in home.
  33. So, you know, toe leave their houses and go working.
  34. In fact, he was a big deal.
  35. So then the effects of the poster commencement many women
  36. to go work in factories day, huh?
  37. Had earn equal job opportunity from by proven how e
  38. how fast they could learn and, ah, efficient, they could
  39. work. And so after the war was over, a lot
  40. of the men came back home, and the women, some
  41. of the women, were laid off just because the men
  42. came back home into job back.
  43. But the men could no longer claim that they could
  44. do it faster and better because the women had proved
  45. that they could do the same as the men did,
  46. and if not better.
  47. So some of the working conditions, uh, the number of
  48. casualties that are in the factory was equal Oh, on
  49. nearly equal to that of the number of casualties from
  50. nine from 1941 Teoh 1944 on the invasion of D
  51. Day. And that's because many I even had to move
  52. Teoh temporary housing such a trailer parks because they could
  53. not commute to work by driving a car cause there's
  54. gas for actions and all of these limits to support
  55. the war effort.
  56. And so many of these temporary housings were, uh, I
  57. didn't have proper sewage, running water, electricity and proper like
  58. bathing stations.
  59. So that was, Ah, that made it dangerous for factory
  60. workers and so working women.
  61. And between 1940 1945 5 million women's heard are working
  62. in the factories, and that's because they needed so then
  63. you the they needed so many people just to fill
  64. the factories.
  65. All everyone was out Friday.
  66. All the men in her out find the war.
  67. And, uh, 350,000 women joined the military during World War
  68. Two for non combat roles such as nurses and ER,
  69. doctors and other positions like that.
  70. And 1943 the predominantly male aircraft industry fact of the
  71. aircraft factories were, uh, majority female.
  72. So that was a big swing.
  73. And, uh, in the beginning, the pilots used to joke
  74. that the plans were that it would be questionable if
  75. they even started shortly after, Like lesson six months, the
  76. planes were built faster and if not better than they
  77. were before by the men.
  78. So the last thing of facts of the poster So
  79. it has been used by many different people, and he
  80. probably seen it before.
  81. And just one example Hillary Clinton used in our 2016
  82. presidential campaign has been used in many ah protests for
  83. inequality. And so it it it has, uh, has a
  84. long lasting legacy.
  85. So the post war, and so women really thrived, uh,
  86. with financial freedom.
  87. So they have their own jobs.
  88. They weren't relying on their husbands or their boyfriends.
  89. Teoh pay for their lives and speak it, pay for
  90. what they want by what they want.
  91. Because it was their mind that they had earned and
  92. a lot of them we're not willing to give it
  93. up after the war is over.
  94. And so that sparked a long fight for freedom.
  95. And, uh, quality and marriage isn't, uh, jobs in the
  96. labor job world continued legacy that we can do it
  97. poster. So it's become like an icon for women's and
  98. minority rights protests throughout the US and some of the
  99. world. That top picture is an example of the, uh,
  100. Hillary Clinton's campaign ad.
  101. And then it's a photo from one of the women's
  102. marches where we can do it.
  103. Posters scene there, and so is question.
  104. Are arguably one of the I seems like one of
  105. the single posters that propaganda posters that the U.
  106. S has made that has the longest legacy and effect
  107. on the world that did and see that is it
  108. and that is we can do it poster.
