  1. All right, Mr Jasinski.
  2. And this is the practice run Slash what?
  3. I'll probably send out if I need to.
  4. Um, case things don't go well.
  5. So the agenda we're gonna talk about how to get
  6. help. And where do you go for that?
  7. The fact that the courses air self paced.
  8. And what does that mean?
  9. Because they're kind of self paced.
  10. Um, we'll talk about grades and kind of how we
  11. go about that.
  12. We're gonna do that this year.
  13. And some expectations for the zoom ease on that.
  14. Any specifics about course specifics will leave at the end.
  15. Everything else is kind of true for every other course.
  16. So first and foremost, how do we get help when
  17. we're struggling with things?
  18. And that has been the most difficult thing this year.
  19. Because usually I can pick up on things more readily
  20. because I see you more often, right?
  21. So I can I see these students that I kind
  22. of pick up on things and I can notice kind
  23. of get the confused, confused face.
  24. Um, but I only see them once a week in
  25. person, so I don't get as much a chance toe
  26. get the body language.
  27. Um, even on zoom, I kind of get the zoom
  28. face where you kind of see the forehead, and they're
  29. kind of looking down like, uh okay.
  30. All right.
  31. I can't pick up a ZX.
  32. Well, what's clicking?
  33. What's not clicking?
  34. So I'm asking for their help to reach out to
  35. use the comments feature on Google classroom, because that is
  36. going to push out notifications to me.
  37. So if I'm in class working with the roomies and
  38. they're at home working on something at home and want
  39. to get a hold of me um, I have a
  40. question for something, but don't know that yet, but dont
  41. are not there they have.
  42. I have my phone with me.
  43. Yes, I'm in the class using my phone, but I'm
  44. tryingto stay connected.
  45. So, um, those comment notifications push out to my phone
  46. so I can see that.
  47. Oh, so until he's got a question about such and
  48. such on dykan pop in there real quick and respond
  49. on def not I have it Banks, So I know
  50. I need to respond to them soon.
  51. Eso comment feature is gonna be super helpful.
  52. I'm also gonna use comments a lot as I'm going
  53. through work and grading a lot of the stuff.
  54. A lot of the times I would be able to
  55. be here while they're working on something and could look
  56. over her shoulder and say, Hey, Oh, did you think
  57. about this?
  58. So don't forget to get out of a I'm not
  59. there now.
  60. They're not doing it in front of me.
  61. So I might add comments to an assignment that they've
  62. already turned in and return it without a grade.
  63. Justo, bounce it back to them and say, Hey, fix
  64. the thing.
  65. Because if you were here and I was doing this
  66. near you, I would have told you to fix the
  67. thing. And he would have fixed the thing s I
  68. might bounce stuff back to you and using the comments
  69. feature in that, um, lower the threshold that you would
  70. email me something over because I wanna be able to
  71. communicate with you and I check my email often.
  72. Eso that's gonna be a great way to get a
  73. hold of me, even if you're saying, Hey, I'm struggling
  74. with this assignment.
  75. I don't know where to start.
  76. Here's a screenshot of where I AM right now.
  77. I'm not even sure what question to ask, but like,
  78. yeah, that's enough.
  79. I can get the ball rolling and work with their.
  80. That's That's where I can come in, make a buddy
  81. in the class somebody to reach out to that, you
  82. know? Okay, I'm struggling with this.
  83. They're also doing the same thing.
  84. Can we connect on this and talk about that as
  85. we're doing this?
  86. We kind of lose so much collaborative nature of what
  87. we do by just the very format that we're in.
  88. So we have teams that we use breakout rooms somewhere,
  89. sometimes in class for stuff we're doing.
  90. That's been kind of difficult to get rolling to get
  91. comfortable with.
  92. Um, but the sooner you could make a buddy, even
  93. if they're in one of my other classes, they're still
  94. doing the same physics.
  95. Right? So find what you can connect thio on dhe.
  96. There's always flex block that h block on Tuesdays and
  97. Fridays that if you want to sign up for me,
  98. I have a mix of people coming in here.
  99. We do all kinds of physics and engineering and all
  100. kinds of things.
  101. So, um, that is always there available as well.
  102. So I want to keep the course self paced to
  103. appoint. Um, there are usually two deadlines either at the
  104. end of the unit or about halfway through a quarter.
  105. Kind of have to have caught up with all the
  106. things. But I'm not going to surprise you with that.
  107. I'll say Okay.
  108. At the end of Week six, you should have finished
  109. all the things up their week five.
  110. So you kind of have a window of making sure
  111. that's all cut up.
  112. Just you have gone too far behind.
  113. But the reality is you're here.
  114. You're not here.
  115. You're out a day.
  116. I'm out a day and all of a sudden to
  117. keep track of who was here when on what days
  118. and what times.
  119. I don't want to worry about that.
  120. So the due dates, they're they're they're flexible.
  121. They're they're form or pacing.
  122. Here's the due dates.
  123. There more for pacing.
  124. Usually it's on a Friday or a Tuesday just to
  125. kind of keep you moving along as to how quickly
  126. we should be going through things.
  127. But know that you could always go back and do
  128. things I'm not processing any late penalties or any of
  129. that. So it's worth going back and doing the work.
  130. Um, if you are getting overwhelmed and just bogged down
  131. by so many things, reach out.
  132. We can kind of triage.
  133. What's their set aside?
  134. What's most important?
  135. I could forgive stuff that's less important, like we can
  136. work through that if you're getting buried right, um, they
  137. won't leave you behind a couple of things to keep
  138. track of the progress tracker on, um, that's linking the
  139. classroom, which the It's basically a spreadsheet and parents if
  140. you haven't seen this yet.
  141. Um, it's every student and every assignment that we're doing
  142. and keeps track of.
  143. What are you done with?
  144. Where are you?
  145. Is it a complete or not complete?
  146. There's no grades on their, um, no information like that,
  147. but just kind of keeps track of progress.
  148. My hope is that on there for keeping track of
  149. that, you can see that.
  150. Okay, this person is also kind at the same point
  151. I am.
  152. That may be a person I can collaborate with and
  153. reach out to and say, Hey, how is this going?
  154. Are you working on this?
  155. Can I have some help with this, um, as we
  156. go there.
  157. Plus, if you just want a list of things to
  158. do, that is the list of things to Dio, um,
  159. also in Google Classroom.
  160. If you haven't tested this out already, the to do
  161. feature eyes super helpful because then that you can filter
  162. by class.
  163. But it gives you just the assignments that's left to
  164. do or is missing or is coming up.
  165. Um, might be a nicer format.
  166. For there.
  167. You can find that click the little three lines up
  168. on the top, and I believe there's a to do
  169. there and also in the classroom page.
  170. There's a few all on the left hand side.
  171. You can see a list that way that will become
  172. super handy grades.
  173. How do we approach grading?
  174. Um, from my perspective, I always think of it in
  175. three steps.
  176. When we first start something, you're learning it.
  177. It's brand new.
  178. I'm not going to throw a number grade at you
  179. when we're just learning things right.
  180. So those are very low stakes items as we try
  181. to kind of go through and wrap your head around
  182. stuff. Then we move into some practice, usually hopefully with
  183. somebody else whenever we can, because the more you can
  184. talk about these concepts, the better off it is for
  185. you. But we'll practice the material through some activities or
  186. something we're doing.
  187. And then, at the end, demonstrating that you know the
  188. thing, that you can do the skill or you know
  189. the information.
  190. Um, that's when the you'll have stuff that all grades
  191. so typically in the engineering courses, that's 20% for activities,
  192. 80% for the skills that we're doing.
  193. So it that be projects or our quizzes that come
  194. along the way.
  195. There's not usually a lot of tests, not really not
  196. testing the engineering courses.
  197. If we're in physics, I break that down a little
  198. further, 10% for the little daily activities that we do,
  199. The things that we're doing and all those things are
  200. completion. Have you done the thing?
  201. That's the learning phase.
  202. Three quizzes and labs.
  203. Okay, We should know a little bit by now, so
  204. there's a little bit higher stakes for that on About
  205. 60% of it is Theus s mints at the ends.
  206. Okay. We should know the things you should be able
  207. to demonstrate the skill.
  208. At that point.
  209. That's where the assessment kicks in.
  210. That's worth a little bit more.
  211. Um, these points, these percentages are approximate.
  212. So I usually go by total points.
  213. We may do a little more of one, but I'm
  214. shooting for thes numbers at the end of the quarter.
  215. Have that breakdown okay for the zoom ease.
  216. Um, what do I expect of you?
  217. Definitely almost.
  218. Thus far, we've been checking in the beginning of class,
  219. we have a zoom together.
  220. We might go into breakout rooms.
  221. There might be a do now activity.
  222. It might be a para deck.
  223. It might be a form.
  224. It might be something that we're doing together.
  225. Um, there might be a piece where I say a
  226. spiel of what you're doing, where you're going after that,
  227. Um, ask questions.
  228. The silence is deafening.
  229. But I need you to ask some questions.
  230. Eso encourage students to do that.
  231. That's gonna make a big help.
  232. Throw him in the chat if you don't want to
  233. say them out loud.
  234. But I questions that would normally get asked if you
  235. were here.
  236. I don't think you're getting asked.
  237. I'm leaving the zoom open for the rest of class.
  238. You don't have to stay on for the rest of
  239. class, but I'm leaving it open so that you can
  240. come back and ask a question like you would normally
  241. raise your hand in class.
  242. You have an opportunity to do that s oh, no
  243. one has yet taken advantage of it.
  244. So what?
  245. I'm hoping that will happen soon as people get comfortable
  246. with that, knowing that they can come back and when
  247. they're working on something and they get stuck somewhere and
  248. scratching their head, this is an opportunity for that.
  249. So I'm hoping we can get some more interaction going,
  250. usually at the beginning of the year.
  251. Inevitably, it takes time for people to get comfortable and
  252. classes air quiet for the first two weeks.
  253. And then people start chatting once we kind of know
  254. each other, and it's a safe space and we're good
  255. to go.
  256. The problem is longer now because we don't see each
  257. other as much.
  258. So we're kind of a month in and still kind
  259. of feeling each other out like, is it OK to
  260. ask questions?
  261. It okay to put raise my hand to put myself
  262. out there on dhe.
  263. That's just gonna take time.
  264. I just want you to know that the mawr you
  265. ask, the better I can help you.
  266. I can't read your mind.
  267. I totally would want to be able to.
  268. Maybe I wouldn't want to be able to I don't
  269. know, at times it would make my job easier, but
  270. I can't.
  271. So help me help you, all right?
  272. I guess you being students kind of bounced around being
  273. talking to students talking to parents, but I imagine we'll
  274. put this out to anybody.
  275. Anyway, on dhe, that is the end of my spiel.
  276. So that's, um, hit me with any questions you need.
  277. I'm gonna be putting out of form on a fake
  278. page. As I gather in questions from people frequently asked
  279. questions. I'll put that on a document and put that
  280. both on classroom page of my website.
  281. But, um, please email Lee reach out to me with
  282. anything I can help with Any questions that you're struggling
  283. with and encourage your students.
  284. Parents just encourage students.
  285. Just you ask the question and I'm not sure what
  286. question to ask.
  287. Ask that, Mr.
  288. J. I'm not sure what question to ask, but I'm
  289. struggling with this.
  290. Cool. I'll help you get started.
  291. I'll help you get it rolling.
  292. Get the ball rolling.
  293. But Okay, that's 10 minutes.
  294. 50 seconds.
  295. I got to wrap this up, but thank you very
  296. much for watching this.
  297. If you couldn't make it tonight, hope we'll touch base
  298. soon and take care.
  299. Take care of each other and I'll see you later.
