  1. Mhm. There's actually an activity that I do what I
  2. have done in the past with educators that might really
  3. be stuck in this.
  4. I just don't have time.
  5. And I call it my losing time activity.
  6. And it's a series of questions that I lead them
  7. through that helps them recognize how much time they're actually
  8. spending on dealing with the challenges already and how far
  9. is it getting them to where they want to be.
  10. And so it's more about reframing you're spending the time
  11. already and you're not getting results from it versus let's
  12. look at things that might work better than what you're
  13. working on now that might take about the same amount
  14. of time.
  15. So that's something that we can talk about in one
  16. of the classes surgery consultation if that's so interesting, anybody.
  17. Um The other piece I want to mention is our
  18. priorities. If after a conversation with an educator, what I
  19. recognize is that what they want was different than what
  20. I wanted.
  21. I have to shift, I have to shift my priorities.
  22. Let me give you an example of this.
  23. Um if there's an educator that needs support in one
  24. area because it feels important to them, but I wanted
  25. to go in and uh huh Okay, that might not
  26. feel very good and you might be thinking to yourself,
  27. but wait, I have a job to do too and
  28. I can't just let go of everything that I need
  29. to get done because of where they are and what
  30. feels important to them.
  31. And what I would ask you to think about is
  32. just like we're asking the educators to understand that they
  33. might have different goals and different roles in the moment,
  34. the same is true for us and it might be
  35. that I have some very clear goals and priorities in
  36. my mind For an educator or four classroom and in
  37. that moment I might have to let go of that,
  38. which doesn't mean I have to let go of it
  39. forever. I hopefully can come back around to it.
  40. But just like I'm asking them to do with the
  41. students. I have to be willing to consider my own
  42. priorities and shifting my goals in my rolls and the
  43. skills I'm using to be able to meet them where
  44. they are and to speak in their values and to
  45. support their priorities.
  46. Okay, let's look at the next challenge.
  47. I don't have enough support.
  48. What and this might be feeling like they don't have
  49. support from their own team members or other teachers or
  50. administrators or district, we don't know.
  51. Well what's the set up here?
  52. Uh overwhelmed.
  53. So if the setup is overwhelmed, this is an example
  54. of me having to let go of my goal in
  55. the moment because if I'm sitting with someone who is
  56. sharing their overwhelmed with me, that's where I need to
  57. start uh huh So let's go back to the developmental
  58. model. If they are sharing their overwhelmed with me, I'm
  59. going to start co regulating first off but I'm going
  60. to be using the kinds of clues that we learned
  61. about in the developmental model to determine where they are
  62. in the process and then I'm gonna know where to
  63. start with them.
  64. So for example if there's somebody who is in the
  65. whose past the wondering stage and is wanting to employment
  66. things but they don't know what questions to ask and
  67. they don't know what to do next as I'm co
  68. regulating with them, I am going to start to be
  69. explicit about that I'm going to start to talk about
  70. oh man that just feels like so much I can
  71. just feel my heart beating really fast as you're talking
  72. about that.
  73. Okay, how did you just notice that?
  74. I just noticed when I took a deep breath you
  75. did too.
  76. Now I'm not going to do that.
  77. If they're in the wondering stage, I'm not going to
  78. be as explicit about it because that's not where they
  79. are in the process.
  80. But with somebody that is I would start being explicit
  81. because I want the focus here to be on their
  82. regulation, and that's where I'm going to start.
  83. I'm going to start by supporting them in their regulations.
  84. Yeah, Yeah.
  85. And with it, with this educator, I would ask them,
  86. What kind of support do you want?
  87. What kind of support do you feel like you need?
  88. And again, whatever other questions I might ask, I'm going
  89. to then use that to create a backwards design plan
  90. for us to be able to get to where they
  91. say they want to be.
  92. And one of the things that we're going to go
  93. over in classes, just to all these different kinds of
  94. questions that we can pull from.
  95. Oh, okay.
  96. Next question for next, next challenge.
  97. I don't know how to do this.
  98. This might sound like I don't have the skills.
  99. This is too hard.
  100. I hope you guys can see this quote, I'm gonna.
  101. Mhm. Yeah.
  102. When things are shaky and nothing is working, we might
  103. realize that we are on the verge of something.
  104. Uh huh.
  105. What's this other peer?
  106. I don't have the skills.
  107. I'm incompetent.
  108. I can't do this.
  109. I'm not good enough.
  110. Think about this from developmental age, developmental task.
  111. Am I okay.
  112. That's going to impact where I start because I have
  113. to deal with that first.
  114. I have to deal with the dis regulation that's in
  115. front of me first.
  116. Again, just like the last challenge.
  117. I'm going to have to assess where they are in
  118. the process to know how do I start working with
  119. their dis regulations?
  120. And I'm also going to ask them, what would you
  121. like to try and I'm going to start supporting them
  122. in the area, but they're willing to step into it
  123. to try.
  124. So again, if we go back to what we learned
  125. from the developmental model, I might say, OK, pick one
  126. strategy from each of the categories and let's just focus
  127. on that and that's going to be what I'm modeling
  128. and I'm going to remind you of something that we
  129. talked about in our consultation groups that when I'm working
  130. with somebody that's earlier in the process, I am going
  131. to have to work very hard to not be the
  132. expert and that I was showing them because I think
  133. of this person in particular that's in the am I
  134. okay stage if I walk into a classroom to support
  135. them and I start modeling all the different strategies and
  136. they're focussed on one in each category and they're struggling
  137. with it.
  138. I just saved them.
  139. I've just shown them how great I am and you
  140. can't do it and they're already there.
  141. That's the last thing I want to do.
  142. My dogs barking.
  143. Uh huh.
  144. And I want to remind you about something we talked
  145. about in the console groups around developmental process.
  146. If this is an educator that's working on one strategy
  147. in each category, I want to make sure when I
  148. go into the classroom or when I'm working with them
  149. in any capacity, I'm only talking about modeling those strategies.
  150. This person in particular is already in the place of
  151. feeling incompetent if I start modeling all of the strategies
  152. and getting the students or other educators to regulate because
  153. of my ability to do all of these different things.
  154. I am just reinforcing their belief that they can't do
  155. it. And I'm allowing myself to be up here and
  156. them to be here, which is not what I want.
  157. I'm wanting to empower them and build their skills.
  158. So I'm only going to model and talk about the
  159. strategies they have said they want to work on, even
  160. though it's hard because so often, especially if we get
  161. to be in a classroom, we want to go in
  162. there and show them, look, look what's keep things can
  163. happen, look at what we can do because we want
  164. to go in and we want to show me look
  165. at the possibilities and I get that, I get that
  166. we want to do that.
  167. And yet we're doing it in a disempowering way, if
  168. we're The one doing it.
  169. So we want to support for them and doing it.
  170. Which can be hard.
  171. People think about where this might be coming from, their
  172. own fear, their own trauma, their lack of confidence.
  173. So that's what I want to be building.
  174. Okay, the other thing I want to be talking about
  175. is finding support.
  176. Where does support exist for this particular person, whether it's
  177. me or somebody else?
  178. So, we talked about this model being a teeming approach.
  179. So I'm going to start talking about teaming with this
  180. particular person where what I'm hearing is I don't have
  181. to do this.
  182. We're going to talk about ways to build support.
  183. All right.
  184. Mhm. And they do have an activity um again, that
  185. we can talk about in classes or concentrating that we
  186. talk about classes or consultation.
  187. Um That helps normalize this, that if I have a
  188. lot of educators that I feel like we're in the
  189. am I OK stage?
  190. Um I want to normalize it and try to build
  191. some some community around the fact that we're all feeling
  192. incompetent sometimes.
  193. So that's an activity that I can share with you
  194. as well.
  195. Okay. The final challenge.
  196. This won't work at my school.
  197. Uh huh.
  198. So in this case we might be dealing with school
  199. climate issue.
  200. We might be dealing with an educator that's feeling like
  201. it's just me and I'm an island in the school.
  202. How much can I really do on my own?
  203. And the other issue that might be there, which I've
  204. seen quite often is a lack of trust at the
  205. school. I don't want to put myself forward and do
  206. this because I'm gonna get knocked down.
  207. Other people aren't going to understand, I can't put myself
  208. out there because how is it going to come back
  209. at me?
  210. What's going to happen to me?
  211. Yeah. Try this.
  212. So sure we're going to be focused on finding support.
  213. We're gonna be talking about teaming and in the class
  214. where we talk specifically about teaming, we're gonna be working
  215. a lot on building into briefing strategies for teams because
  216. it takes time to build trust.
  217. Doing this work requires a lot of vulnerability.
  218. So we need to support people and moving through that.
  219. So we're going to spend time talking through how do
  220. I do that?
  221. How do I support people in learning how to breathe
  222. in these highly charged, highly intense situations that are occurring
  223. with students as we help them find support.
  224. We're going to do that in different ways.
  225. We're going to help them recognize clues of safety for
  226. themselves, in the classroom and in the school environment.
  227. The girl club.
  228. Yeah. Uh huh.
  229. First of all.
