00:01 - 00:09
Hello everyone welcome to unit one identities for life. This as our first unit in I.
00:09 - 00:12
B. D. P. English be higher level.
00:12 - 00:16
Now today we will be looking at a quick overview of the unit.
00:16 - 00:21
This unit is based off of our oxford textbook.
00:21 - 00:25
Inside the textbook you'll find the name of this unit along with
00:25 - 00:31
the subtitles of the smaller sections that we will be going over
00:34 - 00:35
throughout this unit.
00:35 - 00:40
We'll be looking at the following topics lifestyle, health and well being.
00:40 - 00:42
The main research question that we will be
00:42 - 00:45
focusing on and discussing throughout our lessons in
00:45 - 00:51
this unit will be what ideas and images do we associate with a healthy lifestyle.
00:51 - 00:53
This brings us in
00:54 - 01:00
to really consider how a healthy lifestyle defines us and our identities?
01:00 - 01:06
What aspects of a healthy lifestyle matter to us? What do we choose on a daily basis?
01:06 - 01:09
Both physically and mentally to embrace.
01:09 - 01:14
This is a picture again about the textbook that you should have and be using
01:14 - 01:21
throughout our course sessions and at home before you review for the external exam.
01:21 - 01:23
It's crucial that you have this textbook.
01:27 - 01:31
Some of the additional questions that will be exploring in this unit
01:31 - 01:35
will be how can physical exercise contribute to our well being?
01:35 - 01:39
How do young adults deal with the stress in their lives?
01:39 - 01:42
How do we become healthy adults
01:45 - 01:50
forming and reflecting on these questions will be relating them to our theory
01:50 - 01:56
of knowledge classes and different subjects across the spectrum that we take?
01:56 - 01:59
Um through our high school years
02:04 - 02:07
throughout the unit will be creating and looking at a
02:07 - 02:12
photo gallery of what kind of constitutes a healthy lifestyles.
02:12 - 02:15
Um sometimes we might have a different,
02:15 - 02:20
different opinion on certain aspects of a healthy lifestyle um
02:20 - 02:23
or what we choose to do on a daily basis.
02:23 - 02:28
Some of us may do it, some of us may not, some of us may be striving to vial of,
02:28 - 02:30
I have tried it and replaced it with
02:30 - 02:33
something else that can still constitute as healthy,
02:33 - 02:40
but something that kind of fits their own schedules and own needs um and interests.
02:40 - 02:41
So we'll be looking at that both in the
02:41 - 02:46
textbook and creating our own along with people bringing
02:46 - 02:49
um certain posters or certain ads that you see
02:49 - 02:52
that we can also analyze and take a look at
02:54 - 02:55
here are some examples.
02:55 - 02:56
I just want to bring attention to the
02:56 - 02:59
fact that a healthy lifestyle isn't only physical,
02:59 - 03:00
it's also mental.
03:00 - 03:03
We'll be talking about mental health and looking
03:03 - 03:06
at the texts that discuss it as well.
03:10 - 03:15
So throughout this unit we'll be working a lot on our communication skills.
03:17 - 03:20
Under these communication skills fall categories
03:20 - 03:22
um called listening skills for instance,
03:22 - 03:27
we're gonna be working on our receptive and productive listening skills.
03:27 - 03:31
Second is oral and interactive skills will be working on this
03:31 - 03:36
through the presentations in the class discussions that will be conducting.
03:36 - 03:40
Um you'll be engaging in writing of course in this unit. Right?
03:40 - 03:44
So that will be in the form of journal entries, personal letters, emails.
03:44 - 03:50
Some of us may even want to challenge ourselves and create our own advertisements
03:50 - 03:59
or flyers or different ways of expressing non of writing nonfiction texts right?
03:59 - 04:02
Um to present the theme of healthy lifestyles. So
04:03 - 04:07
there will be different ways and categories and genres
04:07 - 04:11
that fit this underlying theme of a healthy lifestyle.
04:13 - 04:17
You will also use research skills for your practice presentations.
04:17 - 04:22
For instance in the first couple of lessons will actually be reading a part of a
04:22 - 04:25
newspaper article and using that as a basis
04:25 - 04:29
to research more articles that are credible.
04:29 - 04:33
Um And we'll be talking about credibility to create a power
04:33 - 04:39
point presentation about healthy lifestyles and work on our presentation skills
04:39 - 04:45
right through that creation that we are showing our classmates and
04:45 - 04:50
teacher templates will also be provided for drafting and planning stages.
04:50 - 04:53
So you'll find that in your textbook in on B. C.
04:53 - 04:58
And throughout our class sessions I'll be showing you those in those frameworks.
04:58 - 05:03
So this unit really requires you to think outside the box
05:03 - 05:08
since you are considering things about your own daily life.
05:08 - 05:14
Looking at texts that present opinions where they justify their claims and
05:14 - 05:16
you're being really creative especially when
05:16 - 05:18
you're practicing these paper one responses.
05:18 - 05:22
So when we're creating emails um for a certain theme
05:22 - 05:25
or under a certain prompt or writing the letter.
05:25 - 05:29
All of these are paper one practices for your external exam.
05:29 - 05:35
You need to be creative because you put in your own thoughts and your own details to
05:35 - 05:39
create something in this genre or in this framework
05:39 - 05:42
that they're requiring you to become proficient in.
05:42 - 05:48
Um, I also want to encourage you to really um come out, you know,
05:48 - 05:53
read a lot of a lot of material that has to do with these things so that you can be
05:53 - 05:57
able to um include and incorporate a lot of facts
05:57 - 06:02
in details in your presentations and in your written responses.
06:02 - 06:03
Um,
06:03 - 06:07
one of the biggest things to remember in this unit is to always justify your claims.
06:07 - 06:11
Um, this is just the first step into later on developing, you know,
06:11 - 06:15
bigger arguments and literary arguments where you always
06:16 - 06:20
have to find evidence for your claims in the text and even in your, you know,
06:20 - 06:26
even in in in the emails and letters that you might
06:26 - 06:29
kind of find to be simple and straight to the point,
06:29 - 06:31
there always has to be a justification.
06:31 - 06:33
It always has to your reason if you're, you know,
06:33 - 06:35
arguing or trying to convince someone to do something
06:35 - 06:38
or kind of educate them about a matter.
06:38 - 06:43
So that's what I encourage you guys to do a lot is to always be, you know,
06:43 - 06:48
um kind of aware of the fact that
06:48 - 06:51
you not only also have to justify your claims,
06:51 - 06:56
but when it comes to literary evidence later on, you have to say how it functions,
06:56 - 07:00
why it's important why certain authors make those choices.
07:00 - 07:03
So you look at the bigger picture and you really think outside
07:03 - 07:08
the box rather than being so limited and kind of constricted to,
07:08 - 07:11
you know, a certain way.
07:11 - 07:12
Um
07:13 - 07:19
that's pretty much it for what will be kind of doing in unit one.
07:19 - 07:24
Just a quick synopsis of it, of course, will be going into greater detail again.
07:24 - 07:24
Again,
07:24 - 07:28
please make sure you have your textbook and you're making um
07:28 - 07:33
use of the BC lessons that are posted along with the videos
07:33 - 07:37
that are also posted for you guys to review um after class
07:37 - 07:39
or before class if you want to get a head start,
07:40 - 07:46
thank you. And I look forward to having a good time as we engage in this unit.
