00:03 - 00:06
So my name is Cassie Gang in and I decided
00:06 - 00:09
to look at Chapter one um in the book lessons
00:10 - 00:18
learned. So this chapter really focuses on the fact that
00:18 - 00:21
recreational therapy is not diverge in therapy.
00:22 - 00:26
Um Our goal is yes to create positive emotions but
00:26 - 00:30
also help people heal physically emotionally mentally.
00:32 - 00:36
Um And we provide symptom reduction but we're way more
00:37 - 00:37
than that.
00:43 - 00:48
Okay, so positive emotions really allow people to embrace their
00:48 - 00:52
recreational plans from us um and if they're feeling a
00:52 - 00:56
little discouraged, it really opens them up more to new
00:56 - 00:59
experiences and trying new things.
00:59 - 01:03
Um So our aim is really to create those positive
01:03 - 01:07
emotions that lead to building of positive traits and abilities
01:08 - 01:15
and thus increasing um There are overall positive emotions and
01:15 - 01:20
feelings towards the recreational activities because a lot of the
01:20 - 01:23
people that we will work with are struggling with things
01:23 - 01:28
that may create them to have negative emotions and so
01:28 - 01:31
we want them to want to better themselves.
01:37 - 01:40
Okay, so what can they do in order to build
01:40 - 01:41
those positive emotions?
01:42 - 01:47
Well, if we get them to have more positive emotions
01:47 - 01:55
towards the therapy, they're more apt two want to change
01:55 - 01:59
and make these physical emotional mental changes that will improve
02:00 - 02:00
upon their lives.
02:01 - 02:06
Um so for us, the most important thing is that
02:06 - 02:09
we try to build a relationship with them enough that
02:09 - 02:14
they trust us and can be positive towards their therapy
02:14 - 02:16
and want to make those differences.
02:20 - 02:22
So, as I said before, the book, and the author
02:23 - 02:26
really focus on the fact that when people are just
02:27 - 02:31
positive, they're more apt to try new things and there's
02:31 - 02:34
not a lot holding them back so they will push
02:34 - 02:37
themselves. So if they come in and say they get
02:38 - 02:40
in a car accident and they're doing therapy for that,
02:41 - 02:42
they're probably not happy.
02:43 - 02:47
And so it's our job to really make them push
02:48 - 02:52
themselves and build those positive emotions towards us, that they
02:52 - 02:54
trust us enough to try new things.
02:55 - 02:57
And that's really the goal.
02:57 - 02:58
Positive emotions.
03:03 - 03:03
All right.
03:03 - 03:05
So, the next thing I decided to look at from
03:05 - 03:09
this chapter um was the difference between her ability, Haitian
03:09 - 03:10
and rehabilitation.
03:12 - 03:20
Um So rehabilitation is really regaining skills or abilities um
03:20 - 03:24
that we have lost based on an injury or an
03:24 - 03:27
illness. So we use this with stroke patients.
03:27 - 03:31
We use this with like athletes to get her um
03:31 - 03:33
during their sport, that kind of thing.
03:36 - 03:41
Huh? Ability Ation is a process that's aimed at helping
03:41 - 03:46
individuals with disabilities um gain or keep or improve on
03:47 - 03:48
their skills of daily living.
03:49 - 03:53
So that be things like going to the bathroom or
03:53 - 03:56
changing themselves or just standing up even.
03:57 - 04:01
Um So there are a bit different um based on
04:01 - 04:02
where we use this therapy.
04:10 - 04:15
Um So to get back into the real point of
04:15 - 04:19
this chapter, it was what really is the difference between
04:19 - 04:22
diversion therapists in recreational therapists?
04:23 - 04:28
Um So diversion therapy really works with everybody and they
04:29 - 04:31
make recreation and leisure programs.
04:33 - 04:39
They are designed to really get their mental space back.
04:40 - 04:48
Um It works on psychologically spiritually socially and emotionally game
04:49 - 04:50
like improving on their well being.
04:51 - 04:55
Um So their whole goal is to really distract them
04:55 - 04:58
from maybe the negative things in their lives or say
04:59 - 04:59
they can't walk.
05:00 - 05:03
They distract them from that fact because maybe they just
05:03 - 05:04
won't ever get it back.
05:05 - 05:09
Um recreational therapists, we want to restore that function.
05:10 - 05:13
So our goal is to really take their positive emotions
05:14 - 05:19
and help them restore all the things that they lost
05:19 - 05:21
from an illness injury, anything like that.
05:22 - 05:24
We don't just want to distract them.
05:24 - 05:27
We want to actually see if we can help them
05:27 - 05:29
improve on things that they may have lost.
05:31 - 05:34
So as I come to an end here, I think
05:35 - 05:37
the main thing that everybody should take out of this
05:38 - 05:40
and out of chapter one from the book, lessons learned
05:40 - 05:47
is that we are so much more than providing distractions
05:48 - 05:48
for people.
05:48 - 05:52
We want to see them improve on their life more
05:53 - 05:54
than they thought that they could.
05:55 - 05:57
So it is really our job to make sure that
05:57 - 06:01
they don't give up on themselves and they do put
06:01 - 06:06
in the effort that they can, and so positive emotions,
06:07 - 06:11
knowing the difference between diversion and recreational therapy is so
06:11 - 06:12
important to our job.
06:14 - 06:14
Thanks for listening.
