  1. Hi everybody. My name is Rachel Auerbach and this is my environmental design final.
  2. Just a quick introduction. Hi, I'm Rachel.
  3. This is a picture of me. My camera was not working so I figured I'd
  4. give you guys a picture at least.
  5. Um I chose the science center as my interest area for the preschool classroom.
  6. First thing we're going to talk about is the preschool classroom.
  7. So here is the sketch that I made of the preschool classroom.
  8. Um a few things that I have inside my preschool classroom is a block center,
  9. a science center, a reading corner,
  10. a music area,
  11. math center,
  12. art center, dramatic play center,
  13. group table, work area
  14. and a sensory center.
  15. And these are all
  16. in different places in the classroom.
  17. The next thing we're going to talk about is the science center.
  18. So here is a quick overview of the science center that I have made.
  19. Um Yeah, we have the table work area, the book area,
  20. the place that I have a little rug down so kids can sit if they want.
  21. And over to the left, there is
  22. a place where people could,
  23. I put little seasons, they have, can make a plant in the end.
  24. Um So here are things that are in my science area that I wanted to really focus on.
  25. Um I have a five senses discovery table which is pretty much a
  26. place where Children can all focus on all different senses of touch,
  27. taste, sound, smell, those things.
  28. Um
  29. and here's a quick picture of it.
  30. So you can kind of get an idea of what I'm talking about.
  31. Um Next thing is magnets.
  32. I think Children find magnets very interesting to
  33. see you know what does stick together?
  34. What doesn't that kind of thing? Um Next is Mirror play.
  35. Mirror play is the way that Children
  36. can just kind of understand how mirrors work.
  37. They can kind of play with the ideas themselves in the
  38. mirror and see different things they're playing with in the mirror.
  39. Here are materials that you would find inside my science center.
  40. You'd find magnets, mirrors, items that are found in nature.
  41. Children can go find these themselves with the teacher. Honey paint
  42. books and songs that are science oriented
  43. test tubes containers to put these things in
  44. things of that sort
  45. some examples of themes that I have found are
  46. um my body theme, it bugs and insects theme,
  47. pets theme and the nature around me theme.
  48. So I have some activities that kind of go with these things. So the first activity is
  49. called my Foot.
  50. And this is where you can have Children trace their own
  51. foot or have a teacher help them trace their foot.
  52. And they can use UNIX cubes or something to measure the foot.
  53. And then kids can be like oh my foot is seven cubes long. So
  54. I don't know it's something that you can focus on math and science at the same time.
  55. Um
  56. the next one is a beehive theme so Children
  57. can kind of explore an old beehive. The teacher can bring in
  58. old beehive that they found or
  59. and just kind of have the kids explore it and ask questions.
  60. Um For the pets theme,
  61. I was thinking we could visit a pet store obviously with parental permission,
  62. but that way they can see all sorts of kind of
  63. animals because I know a lot of the time they have um
  64. kind of a class pet,
  65. but this way they can see all sorts of kind of animals if this is not able to happen
  66. you can bring in animals or you just show pictures of animals, that kind of thing.
  67. And then for the nature around me theme I have
  68. a nature scavenger hunt which I have personally done at
  69. the daycare I work at and Children absolutely love it.
  70. If you go around you give them a
  71. kind of outline of all the different
  72. things they're looking for nature, whether this be pine cones, leaves, houses,
  73. any, anything that's kind of around the area that you're at.
  74. Um
  75. and you can just you find them,
  76. you can either take a picture of them or you can bring them back if you're able
  77. and it's a great way that kids can learn what's around
  78. them and how to use the things around them as well.
  79. Um Some things that are really great ways that
  80. you can have good relationships with the families of
  81. the Children you're working with is to make sure
  82. that you're in constant communication with the guardians.
  83. Um this can be done in many ways. Text,
  84. email, all sorts of things just to make sure
  85. that they understand what you're doing and you understand
  86. what's going on in the child's life as well.
  87. Um A great way to this is monthly preschool plans sent home.
  88. So every month you send out a little newsletter of what they did last month.
  89. So pictures and also what will be happening for the months to come
  90. just so the parents can be more involved.
  91. And then another great thing to do is weekly folders that are sent home. So this is
  92. just a folder that you have. The kids bring on Mondays and take home on Fridays.
  93. And this just as their daily work worksheets, crafts things of that sort.
  94. And so this is my quick parents Welcome to the science center.
  95. Um here Children will learn about what they play with,
  96. learn and play about the nature around them,
  97. Casey kids care. This is the daycare I work with. This is
  98. just what I used.
  99. Children will learn about the human body, bugs, insects, pets nature.
  100. And I found this quote, the important thing is to not stop questioning.
  101. Thank you. This is um, my whole presentation. I hope you guys enjoyed
