00:01 - 00:03
Hello. My name is Alexis Stinnett and I'm the Spanish
00:03 - 00:05
one teacher at the high school.
00:06 - 00:07
Thank you so much for watching this video.
00:08 - 00:10
And I hope you get to learn a little bit
00:10 - 00:11
more about me.
00:14 - 00:16
So here are some things about me.
00:16 - 00:19
First I teach manage one and two at the high
00:19 - 00:20
school. I didn't mention that before.
00:22 - 00:24
I only have one section of Spanish, one students.
00:24 - 00:27
A majority of the students take Spanish, won the junior
00:27 - 00:29
high. Eso I only have one section.
00:30 - 00:34
We usually have about 10 to 20 kids in each
00:34 - 00:35
Spanish one class.
00:35 - 00:38
So this year we have a group of about 14
00:40 - 00:41
which is a really good class size.
00:42 - 00:45
I got my undergrad and Spanish education from NK You
00:46 - 00:49
and I have my master's degree in educational technology from
00:49 - 00:49
Miami University.
00:51 - 00:53
I studied in Spain for a semester when I was
00:53 - 00:57
getting my undergrad, and I am also the student council
00:57 - 00:59
adviser here at the high school.
00:59 - 01:02
So I have about 20 students that I work with
01:03 - 01:08
that help make decisions for different events and any decisions
01:08 - 01:09
that need to be made that needs to be the
01:09 - 01:10
student input.
01:10 - 01:13
They help make those decisions, so I am their advisor
01:13 - 01:14
for them.
01:16 - 01:21
So for class, curriculum and supplements, we use the so
01:21 - 01:26
most curriculum, which is a wonderful curriculum that uses storytelling
01:27 - 01:28
in cultural exploration.
01:29 - 01:32
Um, each unit that we do has a story that
01:32 - 01:35
relates Thio whatever topic or theme that we're doing.
01:36 - 01:39
And then we also each unit will have some type
01:40 - 01:41
of cultural component as well.
01:42 - 01:45
We will focus on a lot of different countries this
01:45 - 01:49
year. We're currently focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month, so we
01:49 - 01:49
do holidays.
01:51 - 01:54
Eso we just I like to teach a lot about
01:54 - 01:57
culture and different ways that people live around the world.
01:58 - 02:01
We also use garbanzo, which is an online reading platform,
02:02 - 02:05
and it has interactive lessons where it builds on the
02:05 - 02:08
vocabulary that we're using through so most so it's almost
02:08 - 02:09
like garbanzo are connected.
02:11 - 02:13
We also used in your Woolley as part of our
02:13 - 02:18
curriculum. So he is a former teacher who creates curriculum
02:18 - 02:24
for for teachers and for students, and hey creates songs
02:25 - 02:30
and music videos and has a interactive digital platform that
02:31 - 02:32
the students really enjoy.
02:32 - 02:36
That ends up being one of the favorites for the
02:36 - 02:37
students every year.
02:38 - 02:42
Each class eso, Spanish one and Spanish, too, but Spanish
02:42 - 02:47
one specifically will read to fluency comprehension based readers.
02:48 - 02:51
And so these are short books that were made for
02:52 - 02:56
Spanish learners by people who are native Spanish speakers, and
02:56 - 02:59
we usually devote about a month to each book.
02:59 - 03:02
So coming up in October, who will read our first
03:02 - 03:07
one called El Copy, and then we'll read another one
03:07 - 03:11
around April, and that one is called Brendan Brown, Pero
03:12 - 03:16
so with these readers, it's a really it's a big
03:16 - 03:20
confidence builder for the Spanish one students, especially because they
03:20 - 03:22
can say that they read an entire book in Spanish,
03:23 - 03:26
and the students really like them.
03:26 - 03:29
It includes a lot of culture and a lot of
03:30 - 03:32
different themes that are relevant to today's kids.
03:33 - 03:37
And then also we use comprehensible, input based activities, which
03:38 - 03:41
essentially means that I am speaking to them in Spanish,
03:42 - 03:44
asking for their input.
03:44 - 03:47
They're receiving the language, and then as they get better
03:48 - 03:50
with receiving the language, we start to push for the
03:50 - 03:52
output, meaning that they're able to speak.
03:53 - 03:55
They're able to write, read eso.
03:55 - 03:56
It was Spanish one.
03:56 - 04:00
We have a lot of newbies, so it's a lot
04:00 - 04:03
of just me talking and having them absorb it.
04:03 - 04:05
And then as we get through the year, they start
04:05 - 04:07
to produce a lot more of the language, which is
04:08 - 04:08
awesome to see.
04:11 - 04:13
So in class we'll talk a lot about the path,
04:13 - 04:13
the proficiency.
04:14 - 04:16
So this is a scale that we use.
04:17 - 04:21
Thio essentially base where the student is on their proficiency
04:21 - 04:22
in the language.
04:23 - 04:25
It starts at Novice Low, which is where the majority
04:25 - 04:28
of Spanish one students are and goes all the way
04:28 - 04:29
up to advanced high.
04:30 - 04:33
There is no expectation that within the heist, their high
04:33 - 04:35
school career that they will be within the advanced range,
04:36 - 04:37
each sub range.
04:38 - 04:40
So novice, low to novice and the novice madam novice
04:41 - 04:41
high so and so forth.
04:42 - 04:45
The higher you go up in the range, the harder
04:45 - 04:47
it is to go into that next level.
04:49 - 04:52
So we usually see a big jump from novice loaded
04:52 - 04:54
novice mid and then novice mid two novice high.
04:55 - 04:57
But once we start getting from novice high into intermediate
04:58 - 05:00
and into the advance, it's a lot harder to make
05:01 - 05:03
that jump, so it could take years to get there.
05:04 - 05:05
Um, so our goal for Spanish.
05:06 - 05:09
One is you have students within the novice mid two
05:09 - 05:10
novice high range.
05:11 - 05:15
Now that's not saying that, um, they get an A,
05:15 - 05:16
B, C, D or F.
05:16 - 05:20
I don't base it on their grade essentially, but it's
05:20 - 05:22
more based on what they're able to dio.
05:22 - 05:25
So these proficiency scales have.
05:25 - 05:28
I can statements, and we usually go through and have
05:28 - 05:33
the students decide if they can dio the ICANN statement.
05:34 - 05:36
Then that puts them into a certain range, and we
05:36 - 05:38
gauge that towards the end of the year.
05:42 - 05:43
Here's my contact information.
05:44 - 05:44
Emails Best.
05:44 - 05:47
It's a stint at Emory Mont schools Dot or GE.
05:47 - 05:50
I checked periodically throughout the day and then also will
05:50 - 05:51
check, usually at night time.
05:52 - 05:55
But I don't always get back to you until the
05:55 - 05:57
next morning, but I try.
05:57 - 05:59
Try to give me 24 hours to get back to
05:59 - 06:01
you. Um, I do have a phone in my room.
06:02 - 06:04
If females not working, you can call and leave a
06:05 - 06:06
voicemail, and I'll try to get back to at the
06:06 - 06:06
end of the day.
06:07 - 06:13
But number is 513272 of 7658 And if you are
06:14 - 06:15
for allowed in the building at some point.
06:16 - 06:18
Um, if you stop by on in room number 12
06:20 - 06:24
in the world language area, and I already touched based
06:25 - 06:27
on this but I just wanted to reiterate, since we
06:27 - 06:31
are in kind of an online platform slash hybrid slash
06:31 - 06:35
in class, we do use a lot of technology with
06:35 - 06:37
my background in ad tech.
06:37 - 06:39
We use a lot of technology as well just because
06:39 - 06:40
I'm very comfortable with it.
06:41 - 06:43
So some of the resource is that we'll use this
06:43 - 06:47
year school aji quiz lit garbanzo, which I already mentioned,
06:47 - 06:48
and then G suite.
06:48 - 06:52
We use a lot of Google based APS Thio complete
06:52 - 06:56
assignments. So again, I want Teoh.
06:56 - 06:59
Thank you for watching this video and I hope to
07:00 - 07:03
meet you all at some point during this year, face
07:03 - 07:03
to face.
07:04 - 07:05
But thanks so much and
