00:01 - 00:06
Hi everyone, my name is Jacob and this is my snapshot presentation.
00:10 - 00:13
So my mentor is my brother,
00:13 - 00:16
he had an interesting path through college and I think you'll
00:16 - 00:16
see why.
00:20 - 00:21
So
00:23 - 00:29
he majored in art history at Swarthmore, down by media pennsylvania.
00:29 - 00:33
Um He's always been interested
00:33 - 00:36
in art and he could always basically
00:38 - 00:41
never draw or paint or anything
00:42 - 00:43
and
00:43 - 00:46
so it was interesting for me to see him get
00:46 - 00:51
into art history but he loved knowing all the facts
00:52 - 00:56
and history behind art and he studied abroad in Italy,
00:56 - 00:58
which is something he really enjoyed.
00:59 - 01:04
Um While he was in school though he started fixing people's computers
01:04 - 01:09
for cash and kind of made it his way of having pocket money
01:09 - 01:13
while also like hanging around the computer lab. He's always been tech savvy
01:15 - 01:15
um
01:16 - 01:21
which to his benefit because we would do stuff like fix people's computers
01:21 - 01:22
to even
01:23 - 01:25
uh you know,
01:25 - 01:30
do it, he did a little micro brewery at one point to make money.
01:32 - 01:33
He's a very smart kid.
01:33 - 01:34
My older brother,
01:54 - 02:00
he graduated with a bachelor's in our history and started to work
02:01 - 02:02
at the Chicago Museum of Art.
02:04 - 02:05
Uh
02:06 - 02:10
He had a change of heart midway through because he didn't enjoy
02:10 - 02:11
the
02:12 - 02:14
culture of working in museums
02:15 - 02:18
and this kind of disheartened him because his whole major
02:19 - 02:20
was
02:21 - 02:26
basically relating of working in museums and he just didn't realize he hated it
02:27 - 02:28
until he got into the job field
02:30 - 02:31
now
02:31 - 02:35
just remember he had been fixing everyone's computers
02:35 - 02:36
in college
02:37 - 02:39
um and networking
02:40 - 02:42
with people while he was fixing
02:43 - 02:44
computers. Um
02:47 - 02:51
So that's something that's gonna be helpful for him in this next part.
02:54 - 02:55
He actually
02:56 - 02:57
had to
02:58 - 03:01
after graduating and realizing that he went into the wrong field
03:02 - 03:03
kind of like me,
03:04 - 03:05
he uh
03:06 - 03:10
decided to start working at the Apple store
03:11 - 03:11
and
03:13 - 03:18
he was just fixing phones and eventually he was fixing laptops and eventually
03:18 - 03:19
he was
03:20 - 03:25
fixing phones and laptops and running the floor and being a manager and then
03:26 - 03:27
he went back to,
03:27 - 03:33
he went and he took a few more courses through his college on how to write
03:33 - 03:34
apps.
03:34 - 03:37
And he started developing games
03:37 - 03:39
and things like that for fun
03:40 - 03:41
little
03:41 - 03:43
uh like the
03:44 - 03:49
little like fun little cliquey strategy games for phones which
03:49 - 03:51
is something he still likes to do to this day
03:52 - 03:54
and because
03:54 - 03:58
it wasn't so much his degree that got him to where
03:58 - 04:03
he was, it was more of him kind of using college resources kind of like networking
04:04 - 04:09
um That kind of helped him become what he is now and now he actually
04:10 - 04:11
follow his passion
04:13 - 04:16
and now he's writing apps for
04:17 - 04:19
legal companies or health companies.
04:20 - 04:22
So he's kind of creating
04:23 - 04:27
doing this whole different thing that has nothing to do with his major
04:28 - 04:32
but he did utilize school and very like minute li
04:33 - 04:34
kind of
04:34 - 04:38
he didn't have to go and go for another four years. Like he just
04:39 - 04:41
was working at Apple and then
04:42 - 04:43
I started working for another company and
04:43 - 04:45
then started taking some classes so you could
04:45 - 04:52
take on a few more things just like a certificate in in programming and uh
04:53 - 04:53
he was able to
04:54 - 04:57
change his whole career and he makes a ton of money and he travels
04:57 - 04:58
and
04:59 - 05:01
he has great benefits and it's kind of
05:02 - 05:05
My mentor and what I kind of want to do with my life because for the
05:05 - 05:11
last 10 years I've been cooking and I want benefits and I want to travel and
05:11 - 05:18
um I think my big brother is is pretty smart, so I'm not going into his field, but
05:19 - 05:21
I'm going back to school for a better life,
05:22 - 05:23
um
05:24 - 05:27
more money and benefits and all that stuff.
05:28 - 05:29
Um
05:29 - 05:32
so little info about me,
05:35 - 05:36
I'm sorry.
05:40 - 05:43
So I graduated high school at a public school
05:43 - 05:46
and did a few
05:47 - 05:48
months
05:49 - 05:52
uh William Paterson University
05:53 - 05:58
before I dropped out and decided to take a break and I ended up cooking
06:00 - 06:04
and then I cooked, cooked, cooked and I cooked my way up to being a sous chef.
06:05 - 06:06
Um
06:07 - 06:10
obviously now I want to change careers
06:10 - 06:11
or paths,
06:12 - 06:13
so
06:14 - 06:16
one of my
06:17 - 06:19
like benefits
06:20 - 06:21
or
06:21 - 06:28
advantages to schooling is that when I'm interested in something, I tend to
06:30 - 06:30
um
06:31 - 06:33
hyper focus on it and research it really
06:34 - 06:35
hard and try
06:36 - 06:38
really hard on it. And and
06:38 - 06:40
as of late I've been interested
06:41 - 06:42
and uh
06:44 - 06:51
You know, oysters and shellfish and marine biology when I dropped out 10 years ago,
06:51 - 06:53
I was actually,
06:54 - 06:58
the way I started cooking was I was interested in working on
06:58 - 07:00
a sailboat and I didn't think I needed a school for that.
07:00 - 07:02
So I went and I
07:02 - 07:04
started to work in the cell
07:04 - 07:05
sailboat up in Maine
07:06 - 07:07
and uh
07:09 - 07:12
I eventually needed to make extra money.
07:12 - 07:14
So I started dishwashing
07:14 - 07:15
at this
07:17 - 07:17
restaurant
07:18 - 07:20
and eventually I would
07:20 - 07:22
begging the cooks to teach me
07:22 - 07:25
recipe here or there if I could help chop an onion or something.
07:26 - 07:29
So I started cooking. It's kind of from my interest of
07:31 - 07:32
working by the sea.
07:32 - 07:35
And my first real, I mean besides five guys,
07:35 - 07:38
my first real restaurant job was the lobster shack in Maine.
07:38 - 07:39
And
07:39 - 07:46
I got to work with shellfish like clams and mussels and lobsters and crabs.
07:47 - 07:50
So it kind of makes sense that I
07:50 - 07:53
would be interested in being a marine biologist because
07:53 - 07:56
these things have always interested me even years
07:56 - 07:58
and years prior to me working in Maine and
07:59 - 08:01
thinking about working on the sofa.
08:03 - 08:06
So
08:07 - 08:08
con
08:08 - 08:09
would be
08:09 - 08:11
I do have a. D. H. D.
08:11 - 08:14
So paying attention to things that don't want to pay attention to stuff
08:15 - 08:18
it was never great at math. I never did good at math.
08:18 - 08:19
It was always
08:21 - 08:22
like
08:22 - 08:24
okay at science.
08:24 - 08:28
So because there's things I'm interested in things I'm just straight up not
08:28 - 08:33
when I'm interested in something I'll go out of my way to research but
08:33 - 08:34
We've got an 80 s. She is
08:35 - 08:37
one of my strengths and it's also one of my weaknesses.
08:38 - 08:38
Um
08:40 - 08:42
I did well on the S.
08:42 - 08:42
ATS,
08:42 - 08:45
which gave me a lot of confidence to think that I could
08:45 - 08:49
just skate through college when my first try 10 years ago.
08:49 - 08:51
That's kind of what made me take a break.
08:53 - 08:58
Um and things I'm worried about as far as college, going back to college now is
08:58 - 08:59
now
09:00 - 09:03
this is my money. So I'm nervous about
09:04 - 09:06
messing up the work school balance
09:07 - 09:11
because I'm working a full time job and I'm going to school
09:11 - 09:13
eventually. I'm gonna have to
09:13 - 09:16
see if I could work a part time job and get some government aid
09:17 - 09:18
if I'm going to do more classes
09:19 - 09:24
or just figure out a longer plan for getting classes done with a full time job
09:25 - 09:28
or maybe try to find a job that
09:28 - 09:31
I can make more and work less at,
09:32 - 09:32
you know,
09:33 - 09:34
one of those things,
09:35 - 09:38
college is different than high school for me because
09:39 - 09:44
I, if I miss a class or a skip school or
09:45 - 09:48
I'm late in the assignment, it's really me messing with my money.
09:48 - 09:51
So I am trying to take it serious.
09:57 - 09:58
The ways I'm going to combat
09:58 - 10:00
these pitfalls
10:01 - 10:02
with the college is
10:03 - 10:07
I'll use starfish connect, which I already have to talk to,
10:07 - 10:10
um guidance counselors and
10:10 - 10:16
and I'm gonna use office hours and try to talk to professors as much as possible.
10:16 - 10:20
I'm in a little stressful part of my life right now, but things will get better.
10:21 - 10:23
I'm going to start slow and not rush
10:23 - 10:26
into everything and they're gonna start taking more
10:27 - 10:28
classes as I'm able to
10:29 - 10:30
adjust my work life balance
10:31 - 10:33
And then I'm gonna make sure I'm constantly redefining
10:33 - 10:36
my goals because in the last 10 years I didn't
10:37 - 10:37
I didn't do that,
10:37 - 10:41
I just kept working and I didn't take time to think is this what I want?
10:41 - 10:46
Like like my brother, he, at the end of his graduation,
10:46 - 10:51
he redefined what he wanted in his goals and started working.
10:51 - 10:56
That's a lesson I can take from him, is to constantly think is this what I'm doing,
10:56 - 10:58
what I want because I can change um
10:59 - 11:02
a person who can change and and
11:03 - 11:03
and
11:04 - 11:05
for the better.
11:06 - 11:12
Um and it will motivate me to make sure to know that this is the path I do want to take.
11:12 - 11:15
So thank you, this is my snapshot presentation.
