  1. Hello everyone. My name is dan buoy and welcome to my presentation for S. A. M. 700.
  2. The caps on course for american University.
  3. So today I wanted to speak on the issue that's
  4. important to me and I believe important to society in general
  5. and it is specifically on
  6. the N. B. A.
  7. And how it goes about um spreading awareness for social justice issues and
  8. whether that benefits the league or is a disadvantage to league overall.
  9. So just to go ahead and get started,
  10. we're going to provide a little bit of background on the issue itself.
  11. So again,
  12. should then be have messages of social justice and
  13. racial inequality on television broadcasts or should they not?
  14. Because some believe that woke free programming could
  15. benefit the league short term or long term.
  16. So we're going to ask ourselves the question whether
  17. we should argue the point that
  18. we continue
  19. um using
  20. pushing the social justice platform
  21. and using the N. B. A. And W. N. B. A.
  22. Two
  23. set the standard for leagues moving forward
  24. and whether that will benefit the league overall
  25. or whether that would be a detriment
  26. for viewership considering love the older demographic,
  27. do not enjoy
  28. those messages and
  29. rather watch basketball by itself. And a lot have gone away from the dealership
  30. itself giving up their own fandom because of political discourse. What have it.
  31. So
  32. to give context and a little bit of history,
  33. 2020 was a very tumultuous year obviously um with the pandemic and specifically the
  34. murder of George Floyd uh Briana Taylor and the shooting of Jacob Blake,
  35. many many more on top of that.
  36. And it very rings, it rings echoes of 2016 with the protests for Eric Gardner as well.
  37. Who oddly enough is very reminiscent
  38. Um of 2020 considering Eric Gardner
  39. uhh his final words were
  40. I can't breathe before he was killed by the police
  41. in the similar chokehold to George Floyd.
  42. But
  43. overall what these messages and the argument for um
  44. these messages is to create a sense of support
  45. and awareness and just to show that a little bit
  46. of humanity and a sign of caring about the community
  47. and that's what the NBA is hoping to do with
  48. you know these messages and allowing athletes use their platform.
  49. So it also can influence a lot in the United States.
  50. And a good example was specifically in the bubble with the W. N. B. A.
  51. In their own protests against one of their owners. Uh Atlanta dream
  52. owner kelly Lefler
  53. because they were specifically supporting
  54. her opponent Raphael Warnock
  55. in leading to his win in the Georgia election.
  56. Other points controversy also include vaccinations over the last year or so.
  57. Um W NBA and NBA have
  58. lead most leaks in vaccinations which is
  59. phenomenal but also the spreading of awareness
  60. can be triggering to some and that's why we're going to
  61. speak on that and how it affects the league overall.
  62. Yeah.
  63. So
  64. What did this impact overall. So television ratings dropped tremendously in 2020.
  65. Um but we do believe TV overall was dropping as
  66. well due to the pandemic and sports in general,
  67. um you know, we're always rescheduled.
  68. Yeah.
  69. And we also see that, you know, from 2016 to 2020,
  70. some people say that these messages didn't really work considering
  71. they were protesting for almost the same thing again.
  72. Um
  73. of course,
  74. A lot of these people didn't understand in 2016 what specifically was going on
  75. but we we we move forward from that and we kind of like
  76. gain some understanding.
  77. It's certain viewers say messages were the divisive.
  78. So,
  79. so what do we propose for gaining back specifically the fans that
  80. leave because of the political discourse.
  81. So we have multiple solutions and our first solution is education for the public.
  82. And this promotes continuing
  83. um the fight and spreading messages of racial inequality
  84. in the United States and globally as well.
  85. And of course it's not this isn't exactly the easiest option, you know,
  86. because if it was easy, it would be done already.
  87. But this is simply to
  88. help with the understanding on specific issues for viewers.
  89. And
  90. if it was that simple, then we would already have,
  91. you know,
  92. consistent change
  93. for human rights.
  94. But this education is a very long term solution,
  95. but it gets others to listen about um set issues,
  96. other solutions include
  97. having a separate broadcast,
  98. but that also creates the idea that you have to spend money and
  99. manpower to create said broadcast for just a certain demographic of viewers.
  100. Um The other option is for
  101. skipping on commentary when world issues arise.
  102. So it's very much like the previous method,
  103. but many spark TVs gift option to skip introductions for your netflix hulu shows.
  104. So why not give them the option to skip
  105. when a controversial moment arises to their attention?
  106. And
  107. this could be difficult to reach certain fans that don't have
  108. to have more traditional TVs or viewing from their computer,
  109. for example.
  110. Yeah,
  111. but this
  112. definitely would benefit league short term uh to
  113. gain back that viewership of those who leave
  114. because of the political discourse and uh image that is set from like the NBA.
  115. So we have to consider
  116. that um the first opportunity for no racial context in broadcast.
  117. So what do we gain from this? It prioritizes viewers
  118. to regain um
  119. those viewers who forfeit fandom because the political discourse.
  120. But also we have that
  121. opportunity to continue and restructure how we present racial
  122. context in the United States for um our commentary.
  123. And this continues pushing for the
  124. fight against those justice and societal pressures
  125. as well as adjusting to adhere to the
  126. younger demographic and prioritizing them long term.
  127. Considering that younger demographic obviously grows into the sport and
  128. watches over a longer period of time.
  129. Mhm.
  130. So our goals um is to increase viewership overall
  131. and to convey the branding of the NBA's image
  132. to several different markets um to speak to our stakeholders
  133. and green light water.
  134. Our idea to
  135. continue with
  136. the messaging
  137. of racial context or to have quote unquote woke free television
  138. and we do this with, we're going to survey the fan base to see the options,
  139. their opinions.
  140. I'm sorry on broadcasting for controversial topics.
  141. So goals short term
  142. if we
  143. continue
  144. with,
  145. you know, spreading the message, would this
  146. help viewership?
  147. Many would say like it decreases viewership and
  148. that work free television would increase viewership immediately.
  149. But also it also impacts our sponsorships.
  150. So of course you have less controversy
  151. with walk free television or television racial context,
  152. but we also have sponsors that,
  153. you know, may stay on board and some may
  154. leave also due to the fact that you ignore things
  155. such as education reform, such as community. Whereas
  156. the other case if you continue with the education, um, you may lose sponsors that
  157. are more traditional in the sense
  158. the long term goals, some would say this could continue to divide,
  159. but also you have a moral obligation to spread awareness on
  160. issues
  161. all over the world as well as the United States.
  162. Um having certain
  163. programs that give you the,
  164. the possibility to skip controversial topics does satisfy the older audience,
  165. but it does upset the younger demographic as well.
  166. So overall we have to believe
  167. what should we do,
  168. whether it's financially or doing the right thing
  169. and allowing athletes to use their platform,
  170. Excuse me,
  171. platform to continue.
  172. I'm spreading these messages.
  173. Total solution overall that we come up with is
  174. that
  175. is the opportunity worth the investment.
  176. And we say that
  177. having um television that ignores
  178. these issues
  179. is not exactly how we fix the issue long term.
  180. So continuing to restructure how we brand the N. B. A.
  181. And how we approach these issues of racial justice
  182. is actually what we decided to do and
  183. you know, short term it does hurt the NBA
  184. but long term not so much.
  185. Uh huh.
  186. We do value general respect for Amanda even if it does, you know,
  187. cost revenue and financial compensation,
  188. but simply we cannot push a rhetoric where we remain ignorant on human rights.
  189. Yeah.
  190. You know, it's not open for interpretation because human rights are not political
  191. and based on our cost benefit analysis,
  192. it's not worth pursuing um
  193. a television program that ignores
  194. uh or a separate television program for um certain demographic of viewers.
  195. And
  196. from our surveys, majority offends
  197. do believe that spreading awareness on social
  198. justice issues is not a problem and they
  199. believe that they prefer that NBA speaks on the community that it cares about.
  200. So moving on cost benefit analysis shows are pros and cons that long term.
  201. There will be less backlash against the quote unquote
  202. woke media. Um it sets a standard for other leagues.
  203. Um the NHL and NFL do have leaks about racial justice, but
  204. it is mostly just words
  205. rather than action and
  206. the NBA has shown that it can put action behind those words
  207. and athletes stand beside elite that cares about them.
  208. Yeah,
  209. the cons of course,
  210. certain donors showed her true colors and repeal their
  211. sponsorships while older demographic also continues to decrease leadership.
  212. But we see that viewership since 2000 something has decreased from
  213. About 20 million to 17
  214. 2, 15 and drastically 7.5 million in 2020.
  215. of course, all sports ratings were down that year. But we do notice since 20,
  216. Our 2002 that the numbers have been increasing.
  217. So in 2021 looks like a huge bounce back year
  218. implementing
  219. implementation. We will scale back the overarching theme of racial
  220. injustice in certain markets, but national television,
  221. nationally televised games will communicate what is necessary for um our messages
  222. and resources will be provided for those who wish to support.
  223. So we want to put action behind those words.
  224. Um, rather than just speaking on
  225. a dead horse about racial justice
  226. and communicating that is key.
  227. Um,
  228. jargon is super important when we want to use words that both parties understand.
  229. Uh, we want to focus on all ethnic backgrounds, not just one.
  230. We want to, you know, continue messaging on stop Asian hate.
  231. Um, COVID-19 and stereotypes as well.
  232. Education reform,
  233. uh more community outreach and providing support for small businesses
  234. that also help advertise for the team as well.
  235. It's our strategy
  236. and these are my references. Um, thank you so much for listening.
  237. And again, I repeat that the argument was for either side, but we do believe that
  238. the restructuring,
  239. social justice protests and messaging in the NBA
  240. will benefit the league overall. So thank you for listening
  241. and I hope you enjoyed.
