00:02 - 00:03
Good evening.
00:03 - 00:08
My name is Laurie Hollis, and I'm here to speak to you today on the behalf of dream team
00:09 - 00:11
for the Excelsior College
00:11 - 00:14
grant proposal for the Shogun's disease,
00:22 - 00:26
I graduated in 2011 with my associates degree
00:26 - 00:30
in medical assisting from Cleveland State Community College.
00:30 - 00:33
And I have been working as a medical assistant every since.
00:33 - 00:37
So I do have a lot to do with the medical field.
00:37 - 00:40
I also had a small hiatus where I taught
00:40 - 00:42
for three years in the medical assisting field.
00:43 - 00:47
So I do know a lot about patients and how they feel and what they do need.
00:47 - 00:49
This is why I have special,
00:49 - 00:55
such a special communication with the patients and why I took a special interest
00:55 - 00:59
in wanting to help the patients with different things that they have going on
01:03 - 01:04
our agenda today
01:04 - 01:05
is one
01:06 - 01:08
to tell you what show grins diseases,
01:09 - 01:14
to to focus more on the more severe parts of what
01:14 - 01:18
Shogun's diseases because most people will tell you it's just oh,
01:18 - 01:20
dry eyes and a dry mouth and it's not.
01:20 - 01:25
So we're going to focus on how it can truly affect a person's life.
01:26 - 01:31
Um three, we're gonna give examples of how the dream team can help these individuals
01:31 - 01:37
and for how can excelsior College help us help those patients
01:37 - 01:39
with their lives and have a better life in the future
01:43 - 01:48
as an overview. Um I want to cover some of the symptoms that
01:48 - 01:50
shogun's disease has
01:51 - 01:56
shogun's diseases accompanied by um dry eyes as we know, fatigue,
01:56 - 01:59
dizziness, migraines,
01:59 - 02:01
ulcers in your mouth because when you start thinking
02:01 - 02:04
about your mouth and just a dry mouth.
02:04 - 02:06
It's not just a dry mouth.
02:06 - 02:10
So if you have a dry mouth that's gonna affect your eating,
02:10 - 02:11
you're drinking
02:12 - 02:13
your ability to chew
02:14 - 02:16
your ability to speak,
02:17 - 02:18
um your ability to breathe
02:19 - 02:23
in necessity as far as that your your throat can swell.
02:23 - 02:26
Um as I mentioned, you can have problems with eating.
02:27 - 02:30
There's also other symptoms you can have that are many,
02:30 - 02:33
many more than I can mention in this
02:33 - 02:35
even um, one
02:40 - 02:41
presentation that we're happy.
02:42 - 02:44
So outside of this presentation,
02:44 - 02:48
I will also give you some websites that you can go to.
02:48 - 02:50
One of the major ones is the show grins
02:51 - 02:55
foundation website. I've got it listed below right here
02:55 - 02:58
and you can go to that. It has a wealth of information on it.
02:59 - 03:01
Um they also do urge you to become a member.
03:01 - 03:03
So that's one thing I want to try to get away
03:03 - 03:08
from for our um future members of the dream team,
03:08 - 03:11
I would like our members to have a free website that they can
03:11 - 03:15
go to and not be urged to join or become a member of,
03:15 - 03:19
but like I said, there is a wealth of information on the show grounds
03:19 - 03:20
dot org website. So
03:20 - 03:23
don't get me wrong, they do give a lot of information there,
03:24 - 03:26
but then they urge you to give money
03:26 - 03:27
um
03:27 - 03:33
to them as well, which is great. That's a great foundation. Um another couple of
03:35 - 03:39
um symptoms that there are, there's as I mentioned dizziness, migraines.
03:39 - 03:41
There can be uh
03:42 - 03:44
ulcers in your eyes due to the dry eyes.
03:44 - 03:48
You can have vision problems, you can have blurred vision.
03:48 - 03:50
Um It can lead to blindness.
03:51 - 03:54
So just to think from somebody saying, oh, you can have dry eyes
03:55 - 03:56
and it actually lead to blindness.
03:56 - 04:01
So I mean that's that's a big take away that people just
04:01 - 04:04
leave out there that they don't, they don't tell you.
04:04 - 04:07
Yeah. Oh by the way, it can lead to blindness.
04:08 - 04:12
My mother has this disease and she has to have her vision checked every
04:12 - 04:15
six months just to make sure that her vision is still in check.
04:15 - 04:18
So it's a major deal to have this um
04:19 - 04:23
this disease and have to deal with it. She takes medication for her dry mouth.
04:23 - 04:25
She takes medic medication for her eyes.
04:25 - 04:29
So she she has both of those um going with with that
04:32 - 04:34
Children's diseases, affected
04:34 - 04:38
four million people currently that we know of. Those are just the ones we know of.
04:39 - 04:41
Can you imagine how many people are out there that
04:41 - 04:44
are suffering with a dry mouth or dry eyes that
04:44 - 04:46
just don't think anything about it
04:46 - 04:51
um or have migraines or have dizziness or have any of the other things
04:51 - 04:56
that might possibly go with this that just haven't placed it with something.
04:56 - 04:58
Um It takes a lot to
04:58 - 04:59
figure out what she
04:59 - 05:03
means is it's not just a simple blood test and oh you've got it.
05:03 - 05:05
30 to 40% of people
05:06 - 05:09
can have shotguns and it not show up on a blood test.
05:09 - 05:12
My mother's did not show up on her first three,
05:12 - 05:13
count them. Yeah.
05:13 - 05:17
123 blood tests she had, it didn't show up on her first three blood tests.
05:18 - 05:18
So
05:19 - 05:24
it's not something that just jumps out at you and says, hey, this is what you've got.
05:24 - 05:27
So you have to be very, very careful about that.
05:27 - 05:29
Um, the characteristics can lead to confusion
05:30 - 05:35
um, about this disease because people just don't understand exactly what it is.
05:36 - 05:40
And so they just kind of steer away from it and don't pay any attention to it.
05:42 - 05:43
As I said before,
05:43 - 05:46
you can become an ambassador on the show grounds foundation website
05:46 - 05:48
and spread the word about it.
05:48 - 05:51
Um, they just, basically by that they want you to just tell a friend,
05:52 - 05:56
tell a coworker, um, started thread on facebook or instagram
05:56 - 05:59
and just spread the word about Sjogren's disease and and
05:59 - 06:01
just get the word out there about what it is.
06:01 - 06:02
And just
06:02 - 06:04
if you can help one person
06:05 - 06:06
to know what she
06:06 - 06:07
means is and
06:08 - 06:10
and that if they know somebody down the road
06:11 - 06:12
and they say, oh,
06:12 - 06:15
you've got this symptom and this symptom and
06:15 - 06:17
this symptom you should have that checked out.
06:17 - 06:18
It might be show grins,
06:19 - 06:23
you may have changed his life. So that, that's a pretty big deal.
06:25 - 06:30
She grins is also a very complex um, invisible disease as I mentioned,
06:30 - 06:34
um this is all a direct quote from venus Williams right here.
06:34 - 06:37
I'm gonna read it directly because it is a direct quote
06:37 - 06:38
as a patient,
06:38 - 06:44
I was misdiagnosed many times and my symptoms got progressively worse to the point
06:44 - 06:47
where I could not play professional tennis anymore,
06:47 - 06:50
understood the daily struggles and the strength it takes to get up
06:51 - 06:55
about your journey. But I also know that support and education.
06:55 - 06:59
This is created by awareness, applaud the patients who shared their stories during
07:00 - 07:04
the show grounds awareness month and everyone who's living with this disease.
07:04 - 07:06
Your stories have inspired me and I encourage
07:06 - 07:09
all patients to continue to talk about this disease
07:09 - 07:11
and make their health a priority.
07:11 - 07:14
You are not alone, venus Williams.
07:14 - 07:17
So that to me says a lot about her as a person that she's
07:17 - 07:20
willing to get out there and tell the world that she has this disease.
07:21 - 07:26
Um and I know she's also a spokesperson for the Liberal V,
07:26 - 07:28
which is a migraine medication.
07:28 - 07:34
So that goes to show you that she probably gets her migraines from Shogun's disease.
07:34 - 07:37
So Shogun's has robbed her from her tennis career.
07:38 - 07:40
Her sister still gets to play tennis, but she does not,
07:40 - 07:42
she gets to watch from the sidelines.
07:43 - 07:47
So it's just, it's, it's very, very debilitating at times
07:48 - 07:50
and it's something that can take your livelihood
07:50 - 07:55
and people don't think about that. Um, it can take your teeth
07:55 - 07:59
if your mouth is so dry that it actually causes your teeth
07:59 - 08:00
to crumble
08:01 - 08:04
um and decay and you have to have your teeth rebuilt
08:05 - 08:07
if you can afford it. Some people can't afford it.
08:08 - 08:10
Um I know one patient who
08:11 - 08:15
recently came into my office and was wearing her mask and
08:15 - 08:17
I said we we don't have to wear the mask anymore.
08:17 - 08:18
And she said,
08:18 - 08:21
oh no, I'm wearing my mask because I don't have my teeth.
08:22 - 08:23
And
08:23 - 08:26
I said, well you you can put them in if you want to.
08:26 - 08:31
And she said no, I don't have my teeth, I haven't had the money to have them replaced.
08:32 - 08:37
So she was still wearing a mask to cover up her face
08:38 - 08:40
even though the covid scare was gone
08:40 - 08:43
because it covered up her teeth or her missing teeth.
08:44 - 08:45
So she was very
08:45 - 08:48
grateful for the mask because she could get out. And about.
08:48 - 08:50
A lot of people will not leave their house once they lose their teeth.
08:51 - 08:54
Um Just think about how embarrassed you would be if you didn't have your teeth.
08:55 - 08:57
If your teeth were missing, it would be very embarrassing.
08:57 - 09:00
So that's that's a decline in help.
09:00 - 09:04
Once you don't have your teeth and your health starts to decline
09:05 - 09:05
you,
09:05 - 09:08
it will go down fast if you're not leaving
09:08 - 09:09
your house to go to your health appointments.
09:09 - 09:12
So that's what we want to help these patients do,
09:12 - 09:15
we want to help them um with their dental bills,
09:15 - 09:18
help them with their um dental implants.
09:18 - 09:20
If we can help them with their eye symptoms,
09:20 - 09:22
help them to recognize their symptoms.
09:23 - 09:26
The proposal that we have for you today is just currently to work
09:26 - 09:30
on a project for this disease that not many people have heard of
09:31 - 09:33
to get the word of shogun's out.
09:33 - 09:35
We would like to go to healthcare
09:36 - 09:36
fares
09:37 - 09:39
Every weekend or every other weekend as we can
09:39 - 09:43
find them locally within a 200 mile radius.
09:43 - 09:45
And to get the word out
09:45 - 09:47
I will get brochures
09:48 - 09:52
and I will get business cards. I will set up a booth and I will just have a health fair
09:53 - 09:58
um there at these um local health fairs and spread the news. Um I will
09:59 - 10:02
help them understand where they can go for more help
10:03 - 10:05
and get their their information.
10:05 - 10:08
I will, I will show them our website, We're going to design a website
10:08 - 10:11
that will have a phone number that they can get in contact with people.
10:11 - 10:14
For more help as far as shogun.
10:14 - 10:16
Um The 1 800 number
10:17 - 10:20
and there'll be just more information that they can get to all
10:20 - 10:24
this depends on how much help I can get from Excelsior College.
10:24 - 10:29
So the more help I can get from Excelsior College, the more people that we can help.
10:29 - 10:33
I do have a another slide that shows
10:33 - 10:36
how much are brochures will cost.
10:36 - 10:42
The brochures will be $233 for the 1st 1000 business cards are $22.50
10:42 - 10:43
for the 1st 1000.
10:44 - 10:46
That's just the business cards and brochures.
10:46 - 10:50
Of course there is mileage that we would have driving back and forth
10:51 - 10:52
um, to these health fairs
10:53 - 10:57
and we would of course assume all responsibility for our food.
10:57 - 11:01
We would never ask you to pay for our food, but um, we would ask for the mileage
11:01 - 11:05
and then we would just need a table and a backdrop
11:05 - 11:08
Which would not be over another $200 or so dollars,
11:08 - 11:11
but any amount of money that you can give us,
11:11 - 11:14
I promise you every penny will go towards this foundation.
11:16 - 11:18
So, um, in conclusion,
11:19 - 11:22
we, we wanted to inform you about Sjogren's disease.
11:22 - 11:25
We wanted to focus on the more severe symptoms.
11:25 - 11:28
We wanted to explain how shogren sufferers
11:28 - 11:33
suffer in various ways and we wanted to give some examples of how the dream team
11:33 - 11:38
that we have formed can help these patients with their individual medical bills,
11:38 - 11:41
medications and mental health if needed.
11:41 - 11:43
Um, and get them some support.
11:44 - 11:44
Um,
11:44 - 11:47
or point them in the right direction to get some
11:47 - 11:51
mental health if that's what they need because it can be
11:51 - 11:51
um,
11:51 - 11:54
a little depressing if you have this and you can't get out
11:54 - 11:58
of the house and you might need some some mental after affirmation
11:59 - 12:02
um, as well, and we will be glad to help them with that as well.
12:02 - 12:05
Um, I thank you for letting us present our proposal today
12:06 - 12:11
and if you have any questions, I will be here to answer any of those. Thank you again.
12:11 - 12:13
My name is Laurie Hollis.
