00:01 - 00:03
Hello Michael Shellenberger, one of the managing partners over here
00:03 - 00:03
at Synergy.
00:04 - 00:06
And this is the weekly market update video for the
00:06 - 00:09
week of May 10th through May 14th 2021.
00:10 - 00:13
While the markets had one of the more volatile and
00:13 - 00:16
downward moving weeks and months, uh The S and P.
00:16 - 00:21
500 posted a negative 1.3% return last week, Bringing the
00:21 - 00:23
year to date right around 11.7%.
00:25 - 00:29
There have now been 25 daily market moves in which
00:29 - 00:29
the S.
00:29 - 00:29
And P.
00:30 - 00:33
500 moved 1% 1 way or the other.
00:33 - 00:35
Although most of those have been in the positive direction
00:36 - 00:41
so far this year, we have seen relatively modest volatility,
00:42 - 00:44
although last week was certainly not the case.
00:45 - 00:50
The Barkley us aggregate Bond index dropped by .4 last
00:50 - 00:53
week, Bringing that year to date down to a negative
00:53 - 00:58
2.7 Russell 2000 also down two last week, but it
00:59 - 01:01
remains up 13 for the year.
01:01 - 01:05
So far, The energy sector remains the strongest performing sector
01:05 - 01:05
of the year.
01:06 - 01:10
Still, it was down .4 last week, but it is
01:10 - 01:14
up 43.4 so far this year.
01:15 - 01:17
The back and forth between growth and value continues.
01:18 - 01:21
The Russell 1000 value up about 1.4%.
01:22 - 01:25
In comparison to the 1000 growth.
01:25 - 01:28
That brings the difference between the 2 to 13.6%.
01:30 - 01:35
In the favor of value Inflation numbers were expected to
01:35 - 01:38
start moving upward and the field from people is that
01:38 - 01:39
inflation is already here.
01:40 - 01:40
It's already present.
01:41 - 01:46
But that CPI rose in April .8%, that's up .6
01:48 - 01:49
from month over month in March.
01:50 - 01:54
That's the largest monthly increase since June of 2009.
01:56 - 01:56
That c.
01:56 - 01:57
p. I.
01:57 - 02:00
is now up 4.2 for the year over year.
02:01 - 02:05
Uh that is compared to 2.6 for the year, over
02:05 - 02:06
year, prior month.
02:07 - 02:07
The C.
02:07 - 02:07
P. I.
02:08 - 02:12
E, which looks at inflation for seniors, has also been
02:12 - 02:14
rising steadily for months.
02:14 - 02:18
However, in 2021 the cola for Social Security is only
02:18 - 02:22
1.6%. Now, there have been calls to have higher inflations
02:22 - 02:26
on Social Security, but nothing has been passed into law
02:26 - 02:31
yet retail sales relatively flat last month from March to
02:31 - 02:34
april, there was expected rise of 0.9% but that didn't
02:34 - 02:34
come in.
02:35 - 02:38
Stimulus checks seem to have flattened for at least a
02:39 - 02:43
month. Electronics, cars, food and services, they also gains in
02:43 - 02:48
april, but clothing, sporting goods and general merchandise, they also
02:48 - 02:52
declines. Uh now, what we see here is jobless claims
02:53 - 02:57
fell another 34,000 and economists believe that the heightened unemployment
02:58 - 03:00
benefits are now starting to impact recovery.
03:01 - 03:06
Job openings surged to 8.1 million with a majority into
03:06 - 03:08
hospitality, manufacturing and construction.
03:09 - 03:11
This kind of highlights the dual nature of the economy
03:12 - 03:14
today, where we have millions of people uh that have
03:15 - 03:17
open jobs and we have millions out of work at
03:17 - 03:18
the same time.
03:19 - 03:23
Well with everything and all the complexity going on the
03:23 - 03:25
world, it's really easy to get distracted or caught up
03:25 - 03:27
in what we call the emotion commotion.
03:27 - 03:30
Of course, creating written plans will always help you keep
03:31 - 03:33
your focus and keep towards your long term goals.
03:34 - 03:34
Uh, and objectives.
03:35 - 03:39
Remember, you can't control any specific investment outcome, but you
03:39 - 03:42
can't help manage your expectation by creating guidelines and rules,
03:43 - 03:47
monitoring those and inspecting them before something doesn't behave the
03:48 - 03:49
way you want it to remember.
03:49 - 03:52
If you aren't testing ahead of time, you're guessing and
03:53 - 03:58
the outcome of awareness creates a lot more reliability than
03:58 - 03:59
the outcome of assumption.
04:00 - 04:03
If there are any specific areas of concern you want
04:03 - 04:06
to discuss, please make a virtual appointment to do so.
04:06 - 04:09
Nothing in this recap is intended to be specific advice,
04:09 - 04:12
as it obviously doesn't take into account your unique situation
04:13 - 04:14
until next week.
04:15 - 04:18
Stay safe, stay ahead of the curve and please let
04:19 - 04:20
us know what we can do to help.
