00:01 - 00:02
Hi everyone.
00:03 - 00:08
So last week the main topic of discussion for us
00:09 - 00:11
was social science and its disciplines.
00:13 - 00:16
This week we begin a new topic, a new unit
00:16 - 00:20
of studies and what we're going to be focusing on
00:20 - 00:23
next is social science research in practice.
00:24 - 00:27
And in this video I'll go over a few of
00:27 - 00:31
the key uh topics in terms that you are going
00:31 - 00:32
to be learning.
00:33 - 00:35
So yeah.
00:36 - 00:41
What does social science research look like in real life
00:42 - 00:44
or in other words, how is it done?
00:47 - 00:48
I mean it can look like a lot of different
00:49 - 00:53
things that can look like this um or for someone
00:53 - 00:55
else, it could maybe look like this.
00:56 - 01:00
Although a lot of the time it actually looks more
01:00 - 01:04
like this with quite a bit of confusion and going
01:04 - 01:07
back and uh back and forth from theory to the
01:08 - 01:08
actual research.
01:09 - 01:13
And I'll explain why that mini joke is funny in
01:14 - 01:14
in a moment.
01:15 - 01:21
So there's a few terms um that are going to
01:21 - 01:27
help you understand what social science research um looks like
01:27 - 01:28
in real life.
01:29 - 01:32
And the first one to know is methods.
01:33 - 01:36
So I'll give you a quick definition that hopefully is
01:36 - 01:37
going to help you understand this better.
01:37 - 01:41
So methods are the techniques and procedures that are used
01:41 - 01:43
to gather and analyze data, right?
01:44 - 01:47
So data can come in different shapes and forms.
01:47 - 01:49
That's why I'm showing you these three little videos.
01:50 - 01:54
You can get information from existing research in books.
01:54 - 01:56
You can go out and look for it in real
01:56 - 02:00
life uh and then uh in whichever way you've gathered
02:00 - 02:02
that you then have to analyze it.
02:02 - 02:04
Okay, so these are the these are going to be
02:04 - 02:08
the main stages of research that you will um, you
02:08 - 02:10
will become familiar with this week.
02:12 - 02:14
Okay, so that's the first term that you have to
02:14 - 02:19
remember. The second one is methodology and notice that methodology
02:20 - 02:23
and methods are not the same two different things.
02:24 - 02:28
So methodology is your strategy or your plan of action,
02:30 - 02:35
and it it determines and explains how you're choosing the
02:35 - 02:36
methods and how you're carrying out your research.
02:37 - 02:41
So basically, it's your research plan, it tells you what
02:42 - 02:45
you're gonna be doing where and when, and also gives
02:45 - 02:48
some justification for those choices.
02:51 - 02:55
There's also gonna be a room for discussion on theoretical
02:56 - 03:01
perspectives, because it isn't always just about the data and
03:02 - 03:04
the information that you can gather in the in the
03:04 - 03:07
real world, so to speak, you will also need to
03:07 - 03:10
have some theory to support your hypothesis.
03:11 - 03:12
And that's another term that we're going to be coming
03:13 - 03:13
back too.
03:13 - 03:15
So what is a theoretical perspective?
03:17 - 03:21
It is a philosophical status that informs your methodology.
03:22 - 03:27
Okay, so you don't just big methodology, uh, you know,
03:27 - 03:31
randomly or or by luck or, you know, you don't
03:31 - 03:32
block it up out of thin air.
03:33 - 03:40
You root it in existing literature theories and the the
03:40 - 03:42
research that has been done before you.
03:45 - 03:53
So once you have your theoretical perspective clearly defined.
03:53 - 03:55
Once you've thought about your research plan.
03:56 - 03:59
Once you've selected your methods, how do you then gather
04:00 - 04:00
the data?
04:02 - 04:06
Well, there are three main categories of methods that you
04:06 - 04:07
should be familiar with.
04:09 - 04:12
The first one is qualitative methods and you will learn
04:12 - 04:15
more about what that entails this week.
04:16 - 04:22
But in short qualitative methods focused mostly on uh narratives,
04:24 - 04:26
uh subjective experiences of people.
04:27 - 04:31
Um and often it's described as something that you can
04:31 - 04:32
put into words.
04:34 - 04:37
And the often uh the approach that has put us
04:37 - 04:41
an opposite to qualitative methods is quantitative methods.
04:41 - 04:46
And here the focus is more on uh data numbers,
04:47 - 04:48
statistical analysis.
04:48 - 04:52
So you say the qualitative methods are expressed through words
04:53 - 04:54
than quantitative methods.
04:55 - 04:56
We're focusing more on numbers.
04:57 - 04:59
Of course this is a very general description and you
05:00 - 05:02
will get more detail on this this week.
05:02 - 05:06
But that's the that's the very core description of what
05:06 - 05:06
these methods entails.
05:08 - 05:10
And then you also have something that's called mixed methods.
05:11 - 05:13
And in this kind of research you could have elements
05:13 - 05:14
of both in different combinations.
05:15 - 05:20
So you could be focused on numbers, but also in
05:20 - 05:24
the narratives and stories and uh a subjective lived experiences
05:26 - 05:32
people. So very briefly, these were the main main topics
05:32 - 05:34
and main terms that you will be looking at this
05:35 - 05:35
week and your readings.
05:36 - 05:40
Um it may sound complicated and like it's a lot,
05:41 - 05:44
but we will be going through them one by one
05:44 - 05:46
and discussing them in our classes.
05:47 - 05:51
So, uh please make sure you read your your readings
05:52 - 05:56
for the week carefully, take notes, not anything that might
05:56 - 05:57
be difficult or unclear.
05:57 - 06:00
And we will be discussing it with you in classes.
06:02 - 06:03
That's all for me today.
06:04 - 06:06
And I will speak to you soon for now.
