00:45 - 00:48
The students live in residence halls at texas A and
00:48 - 00:51
M. And will graduate with the certificate and interdisciplinary studies

01:17 - 01:20
M. Is charged with assistant assisting the achieve students in
01:20 - 01:23
a multitude of ways, including on a social academic and
01:23 - 01:24
overall mentorship level.
01:25 - 01:27
There are currently over 140 members in the organization.
01:29 - 01:33
The chief mates runs office circle model centered around an
01:33 - 01:34
individual student in the achieve program.
01:35 - 01:39
Each circle has 10 to 15 members with each serving
01:39 - 01:45
in different roles, the parent roles and achieve mates are
01:45 - 01:49
planning partners, wellness partners, academic mentors, lunch and dinner buddies
01:50 - 01:51
and members at large.
01:52 - 01:54
The planning partners meet with their respective student once a
01:54 - 01:57
week and help them organize and plan their week with
01:57 - 02:00
whatever they have upcoming and especially making sure that they
02:00 - 02:02
have proper transportation to everything they need to go to.
02:03 - 02:05
They're usually the second in command in the circle.
02:06 - 02:08
The wellness partners meet with their student at least once
02:09 - 02:10
a week for a workout or wellness activity.
02:11 - 02:14
Another part of their duties includes taking the achieve student
02:15 - 02:17
grocery shopping once a week on Sundays to make sure
02:17 - 02:18
they are eating healthy.
02:19 - 02:22
The academic mentors are responsible for making sure that the
02:22 - 02:26
chief student um they are paired with is properly studying
02:27 - 02:28
and staying on top of their grades.
02:29 - 02:31
They also helped their parents didn't find tutors if necessary,
02:34 - 02:36
lunch and dinner buddies pretty much do what's in their
02:36 - 02:39
name. They got to eat with their achieve student using
02:39 - 02:42
on a set date and time every single week, usually
02:43 - 02:43
on campus.
02:43 - 02:46
That way that achieves it into using their dining dollars
02:46 - 02:49
and meal swipes members at large or since you the
02:50 - 02:52
free agents of the circle and fill in wherever needed,
02:53 - 02:56
especially if somebody in their payroll is unable to make
02:56 - 02:57
their uh, weekly responsibilities.
03:00 - 03:04
Finally, the circle is overseen by a circulator who is
03:04 - 03:05
usually also the planning partner.
03:06 - 03:12
As the roles are pretty much similar My time and
03:12 - 03:13
achieve mates.
03:13 - 03:15
I joined a G achievements in the spring of 2020.
03:16 - 03:18
I had originally joined because my future roommate was already
03:19 - 03:21
a member and I've always had a passion for serving
03:21 - 03:22
those with special needs.
03:23 - 03:25
Originally, I was not put into a circular paired role
03:26 - 03:28
because I was still trying to decide how I could
03:28 - 03:30
impact the organization in the most beneficial way.
03:31 - 03:34
I immediately jumped in head first and went on a
03:34 - 03:36
trip to Brownsville in that february with some of the
03:36 - 03:40
achieved students in the uh staff members to participate in
03:40 - 03:42
the charro days fiesta and ride on the float celebrating
03:43 - 03:44
the aga chief program.
03:45 - 03:48
It was an awesome introduction to the program as I
03:48 - 03:50
got to know all the students on an intimate level
03:50 - 03:50
right from the start.
03:51 - 03:55
Unfortunately, only a month later, the COVID-19 pandemic made the
03:55 - 03:58
world come to a halt in Texas A&M.
03:58 - 04:01
Went virtual for the rest of the semester Upon coming
04:02 - 04:04
back in the fall of 2020 always placed into Matthew
04:05 - 04:06
C Circle as you can.
04:06 - 04:10
He's the guy in the picture on the right with
04:10 - 04:15
me. Um, as a lunch and dinner buddy, I had
04:15 - 04:17
chosen matt circle because he was someone that I had
04:17 - 04:19
really connected with over the trip to Brownsville and we
04:19 - 04:22
had a ton of shared interest, namely heavy metal in
04:22 - 04:23
the Houston Astros.
04:26 - 04:29
Well, I love my role in the organization where I
04:29 - 04:31
was, I decided I really wanted to step it up
04:31 - 04:33
in the spring of 2021 and take on more responsibility.
04:34 - 04:37
There was an unexpected vacancy in the website chair position
04:38 - 04:41
on the achievements executive board And I immediately applied for
04:41 - 04:42
the role.
04:43 - 04:46
I have always loved writing and had previous experience as
04:46 - 04:48
a VP of public relations for the University of Alberta
04:49 - 04:51
Interfraternity Council, the I.
04:51 - 04:51
F. C.
04:52 - 04:54
Where I was charged with redesigning their website.
04:56 - 04:59
I won the position in December 2020 and immediately went
04:59 - 05:03
to work redesigning and streamlining the website while making it
05:03 - 05:05
look pretty, was all fun and stuff.
05:06 - 05:08
My main focus, one of the blog section of the
05:08 - 05:12
website. Over the semester, I wrote over 25 blogs that
05:12 - 05:15
were shared throughout the organization and on our social media
05:15 - 05:19
pages. My focus is my focus is ranged from good
05:19 - 05:22
things, um, that are members reported that had happened to
05:22 - 05:25
them in the last week, a re occurring section called
05:25 - 05:26
Good Things friday.
05:28 - 05:31
A feature of each circle getting uh, their own uh
05:32 - 05:36
circle blog where I would highlight each member in the
05:36 - 05:38
circle and also the student that aligned in their circle
05:39 - 05:41
in some other interests in the organization.
05:42 - 05:45
While I probably annoyed most of the other members constantly
05:45 - 05:48
asking them for information to put in the post or
05:48 - 05:51
asking them to share the pieces on social media, it
05:51 - 05:52
was surely my passion for this semester.
05:53 - 05:56
I also upgraded my position in Matthew circle in two
05:56 - 05:59
ways, becoming his planning partner and then his circle leader
05:59 - 06:00
as well.
06:01 - 06:06
Also in order to become boat in order to meet
06:06 - 06:08
both more achieve students and more achievements.
06:08 - 06:10
I took over roles that have not been covered yet,
06:11 - 06:13
such as intramurals chair in a couple of fake positions
06:14 - 06:17
like bachelor chair, like the Tv show in fantasy Football
06:17 - 06:18
commissioner. Right.
06:20 - 06:21
Yeah. Yeah.
06:22 - 06:24
Throughout my short time and again chief mates I've learned
06:25 - 06:27
a ton and I think everyone involved can too.
06:28 - 06:29
I think having a program like A G.
06:29 - 06:32
Achieve at a top tier institution like texas A.
06:32 - 06:32
And M.
06:32 - 06:35
Is so important because it promotes the inclusion of those
06:35 - 06:40
with intellectual and developmental disabilities, not only providing opportunities for
06:40 - 06:43
those with special needs but especially providing equal opportunities as
06:43 - 06:46
they are taking classes alongside neuro typical students.
06:47 - 06:50
This provides the opportunity for not only pier ship but
06:51 - 06:52
also friendship my own life.
06:53 - 06:54
I hang out with several members of the A.
06:54 - 06:57
G. Chief program in my free time and I've never
06:57 - 07:00
considered them anything but just another one of my friends.
07:01 - 07:09
Overall my experience with the idea chief program, overall my
07:09 - 07:12
experience with the Aga chief program as a part of
07:13 - 07:13
the A.
07:13 - 07:15
G. Chief mates has been life changing and I want
07:15 - 07:16
to trade it for the world
