00:01 - 00:05
I created this Prezi presentation because I wanted to dispel
00:07 - 00:10
some myths that I've been hearing about sewing.
00:11 - 00:14
So the number one thing that I've heard is that
00:14 - 00:16
sewing is a dying hobby.
00:17 - 00:22
However, with the um invention of the internet, you've got
00:22 - 00:26
Pinterest and all these um ways to get different ideas,
00:27 - 00:31
hobby sewing is making a big comeback with sores.
00:31 - 00:35
Young Soares who whose parents did not teach them how
00:35 - 00:38
to sew and young mothers, you're seeing that a lot.
00:39 - 00:43
Um when I was in my college class, some of
00:43 - 00:47
the best sewers in my classes, we're guys.
00:47 - 00:50
Um and they were showing, I'll actually show you some
00:51 - 00:52
in just a second, some examples.
00:53 - 00:58
Um I created using this because I think it's very,
00:59 - 01:00
very important on the surface.
01:01 - 01:03
This is kind of what you see the dying hobby,
01:05 - 01:05
but a little bit below.
01:06 - 01:09
We started to see that it is a useful skill.
01:10 - 01:14
Um It helps our students, I'm a teacher to junior
01:14 - 01:18
high, it helps our students to learn so many useful
01:18 - 01:21
skills that will help them in life.
01:21 - 01:24
Um one thing is that it is a money saver
01:24 - 01:29
because it helps us to repair broken things rather than
01:29 - 01:35
just replacing them, whether it's clothing backpacks, furniture, if we
01:35 - 01:39
want to update our furniture that's old or if we
01:39 - 01:42
want to buy used furniture and update it um up
01:43 - 01:48
cycling unused items to meet current needs, uh, fitting clothing
01:48 - 01:49
for you and your family.
01:50 - 01:52
Um there's a lot of ways that saves money.
01:52 - 01:57
It also is a really great opportunity to provide service.
01:57 - 02:01
I've seen people so toys for kids in hospitals, sewing
02:01 - 02:05
sanitary napkins for women in third world countries, uh, sewing
02:06 - 02:07
blankets for refugees.
02:08 - 02:10
Um, there's lots of lots of ways we can apply
02:11 - 02:13
this to better our community.
02:14 - 02:20
Um below this, um, is student development, there's a lot
02:20 - 02:23
more going on with sewing than just sewing.
02:24 - 02:27
Um, when you learn a lot of soft skills with
02:27 - 02:31
this, so you're they're gaining hand, eye coordination, Being able
02:31 - 02:37
to visualize things, process thinking, uh self efficacy k being
02:37 - 02:43
creative that patients that um even interpersonal skills, problem solving.
02:43 - 02:46
A lot of these skills are occurring as you saw
02:47 - 02:49
as you figure out how to do things, learn new
02:49 - 02:56
things. Um It's really really great um project to work
02:56 - 02:58
on if you want to develop a lot of these
02:59 - 03:02
skills that are so useful for our students in no
03:02 - 03:04
matter what they decide to do.
03:05 - 03:09
Um And of course last but not least are some
03:09 - 03:13
careers. Yes there are a lot of fields involving um
03:14 - 03:15
sewing. So I'm just going to point out a few
03:16 - 03:20
um One is an industrial design, Okay these are just
03:20 - 03:25
a few items that need for a person to create
03:26 - 03:28
these two completely design.
03:28 - 03:33
They have to have an understanding of how sewing works,
03:33 - 03:35
they need to know how to sell.
03:35 - 03:42
Um And even with um the machines that end up
03:42 - 03:45
selling a lot of these things together, somebody has to
03:45 - 03:48
set that machine up to do certain things and they
03:48 - 03:51
have to know how sewing works in order to make
03:52 - 03:53
the machine do that.
03:53 - 03:55
Um Of course fashion.
03:55 - 03:58
There are so many things k it's not just designing
03:59 - 04:03
um like clothes, okay you can have a tailor, you
04:03 - 04:07
can have someone who just alters clothing, you have the
04:07 - 04:12
actual manufacturers and the actual workers um shoe and leather
04:13 - 04:17
workers. Somebody has to design the shoe that you are
04:17 - 04:22
wearing. Um Somebody's making patterns, somebody is operating these machines
04:22 - 04:26
that are creating um all this all these items of
04:27 - 04:30
clothing you can go to target and by um So
04:31 - 04:33
there's a lot of different fields within fashion.
04:34 - 04:37
Um, One of the ones that I most love is
04:37 - 04:38
the outdoor recreational design.
04:39 - 04:43
Um, I'm in Utah and one of our universities, I
04:43 - 04:47
had a meeting with um, someone from their outdoor recreational
04:47 - 04:51
design program and they were telling us how a lot
04:51 - 04:54
of their students didn't complete the program because they got
04:55 - 04:58
jobs in that field because they already knew how to
04:58 - 05:02
sell. These companies want people who know how to sell,
05:02 - 05:07
um, even like sails for boats, require somebody to know
05:07 - 05:07
how to.
05:07 - 05:12
So, um, all of these camping gear, somebody needs to
05:12 - 05:18
know how to, so that, yeah, so these are just
05:18 - 05:20
some of the reasons that showing is such an important
05:21 - 05:23
skill and should be in our schools.
05:24 - 05:26
We need more sewing teachers.
05:26 - 05:30
We need more students learning how to, So thank you.
05:30 - 05:30
Thank you for your time.
