00:00 - 00:06
Hello. So for my research topic, I'll jump into the introduction.
00:06 - 00:10
So I decided to do the importance of diversity intelligence literature.
00:11 - 00:14
And I'll start with the quote of diversity is not about how we differ.
00:14 - 00:16
Diversity is about embracing one others
00:16 - 00:18
start uniqueness
00:18 - 00:19
and
00:19 - 00:22
how most Children literature books they do show challenges
00:22 - 00:25
and obstacles of all different kinds of people.
00:25 - 00:28
And this I believe is important because it allows other
00:28 - 00:31
people to know are the young readers to know that
00:31 - 00:34
we all don't come from the same background and we
00:34 - 00:36
all have our own obstacles and circumstances that we face,
00:36 - 00:38
but we all somehow overcome them.
00:39 - 00:39
And
00:40 - 00:42
I'll be talking about how it's
00:42 - 00:44
important to include diversity and Children's literature
00:44 - 00:48
because it grants young Children to gain knowledge of the differences around the
00:48 - 00:54
world and especially how it allows them to identify their own cultures and
00:54 - 00:57
how they gain tolerance towards the differences that they see all around them.
00:57 - 01:00
And that can help them develop empathy towards others and their struggles
01:02 - 01:02
so called
01:03 - 01:05
Evidence. one Topic 1.
01:06 - 01:09
So having Children see other races and cultures and books make them aware of
01:09 - 01:14
others in their background and I can give them an insight into people's history.
01:14 - 01:17
So in one my first evidence that I found was how a teacher
01:17 - 01:21
did an assignment where she focused on africa and the different cultures there.
01:21 - 01:25
And the second evidence I found was how in the study that
01:25 - 01:28
I found spread that they found in the difference of the literature
01:28 - 01:33
that is connected to african asian hispanic and native literature and how
01:33 - 01:37
that that shows how they differ from one another one another,
01:37 - 01:40
but they do have their commonalities.
01:40 - 01:47
So I added an immature from 2019 and it talks about, sorry, it shows how
01:48 - 01:49
some
01:49 - 01:55
percentages are way larger than others, sadly, like even animals have more
01:55 - 01:59
character, main character roles than other races.
01:59 - 02:06
So I'll move on to my analysis and both of my evidence. So the first analysis was
02:06 - 02:09
the assignment that the teacher created was a
02:09 - 02:11
way of making others aware of cultures,
02:11 - 02:12
something a little about.
02:12 - 02:13
So
02:13 - 02:16
this teacher allowing Children to read
02:16 - 02:19
and see different literatures about
02:19 - 02:23
different cultures in africa and how there's not just maybe one there
02:23 - 02:24
lot. Maybe
02:25 - 02:28
this allows people or the young readers that
02:29 - 02:33
maybe they see themselves in these books or they feel like they can connect to it,
02:33 - 02:36
that they know that it's okay to be different and that you don't
02:36 - 02:39
have to just be one way and this allows them to feel like,
02:39 - 02:40
you know, their culture,
02:40 - 02:43
what they believe in it matters and then they're being represented.
02:43 - 02:44
So they feel proud.
02:45 - 02:48
And then my second analysis was how learning of more than one
02:48 - 02:52
country's race and culture is what we should all have Children doing.
02:52 - 02:52
Because
02:53 - 02:56
this allows them to learn all the struggles and obstacles others had to face.
02:57 - 03:00
And that's very important because we all should know
03:00 - 03:01
that
03:01 - 03:05
we don't come from the same. We all don't come from the same place.
03:05 - 03:08
We all have our own challenges that we face and
03:08 - 03:12
showing this in Children's literature allows Children to know that
03:12 - 03:14
their diversity matters,
03:14 - 03:17
that their struggles matters and their obstacles matter.
03:17 - 03:18
And the way they overcome it matters.
03:18 - 03:21
You know, that it's important that, you know,
03:21 - 03:23
you can overcome these things that you're facing,
03:24 - 03:25
don't feel like you're trapped in just
03:25 - 03:28
one moment just because everything feels hard,
03:28 - 03:29
they'll find their way to overcome it.
03:30 - 03:32
And having that in books is
03:33 - 03:37
a major thing, because at a young age, no matter how old young you are,
03:37 - 03:39
there's always a problem that you go through and
03:40 - 03:42
a lot of it can be with how you look or
03:42 - 03:45
how people view you and having that in Children's literature,
03:46 - 03:48
it's important because it shows that
03:48 - 03:50
you can overcome it and that you don't need to feel like you
03:50 - 03:54
need to back down or be scared of anything just because other people
03:54 - 03:58
don't believe in you, or just because you're one way you're not like them, that
03:58 - 04:00
you're not strong enough. That's not true.
04:01 - 04:03
So, I go into evidence to
04:04 - 04:07
and it's about how including diversity in Children's literature
04:08 - 04:12
can teach us about the differences and similarities we may share from people,
04:12 - 04:16
even though we are from the same place and how we create, create relationships.
04:16 - 04:20
So the first evidence I found was starting to read culturally
04:20 - 04:23
sensitive books at a young age can positively affect Children,
04:23 - 04:26
such as having them create and understand
04:27 - 04:32
of ideas and cultures, different cultures from different places around the world.
04:32 - 04:37
And then in the second article, another article I found how, um,
04:38 - 04:40
in countries they teach and read
04:40 - 04:44
about diversity and Children's literature especially,
04:44 - 04:48
and they mostly spoke about the four countries, um
04:49 - 04:52
Australia, India Hungary and Russia.
04:52 - 04:56
And so I also included a image here from 2020
04:56 - 05:01
and it shows again the percentage of Children representation,
05:01 - 05:04
not just Children, there's even animals that are being represented.
05:04 - 05:09
And again, you see, um, the big differences in some of these
05:10 - 05:13
categories here. Okay, so go on
05:14 - 05:15
to the analysis.
05:16 - 05:18
So for topic to um,
05:18 - 05:22
my analysis for my first evidence was that I believe that it's key and young
05:22 - 05:24
Children education that they learn about different
05:24 - 05:26
cultures because it can help them because,
05:27 - 05:30
sorry, it's become more understanding of others and
05:31 - 05:35
having that in books, teaches Children that
05:35 - 05:39
you have to learn to understand people when they come from different places,
05:39 - 05:44
especially somebody that comes to this country knew or even if you know,
05:44 - 05:45
you're struggling
05:46 - 05:46
that
05:47 - 05:50
if you're struggling to, you know, figure out what you,
05:50 - 05:52
where you come from or who you are.
05:52 - 05:53
You know,
05:53 - 05:54
it's okay that it's good to have those
05:54 - 05:57
lessons and books because it teaches Children that,
05:57 - 05:57
you know,
05:57 - 06:00
you're going to find who you are and you're going to figure it out sooner or later,
06:00 - 06:01
but you're going to do it.
06:02 - 06:06
And so my second analysis of my topic was having Children understand that the
06:06 - 06:09
world is not only one way and that we differ from each other,
06:09 - 06:12
but it's okay because we can find our similarities.
06:12 - 06:15
And I believe that's one of the strongest topics
06:15 - 06:18
because we need to know, you know,
06:18 - 06:22
instead of how they're being more hatred and love or acceptance that
06:23 - 06:25
nobody is going to be just the same as you and it's
06:25 - 06:27
okay and you need to learn how to be accepting of that.
06:27 - 06:31
And showing that in books teaches a great lesson because we see
06:31 - 06:35
a lot of that in literature how two characters aren't the same,
06:35 - 06:39
but look in the end, they end up being maybe the bestest friends.
06:39 - 06:42
And that's really important for young Children to see
06:42 - 06:44
at a young age especially so that they know
06:46 - 06:46
okay.
06:46 - 06:50
And my third topic was how showing diversity and young
06:50 - 06:54
reader little readers literature shows Children from all around the
06:54 - 06:56
world that tells Children that it's okay for people to
06:56 - 06:59
be who they are no matter where they come from.
07:00 - 07:04
And I read about a journal that speaks about the different levels of books that
07:04 - 07:07
include topics from different people and cultures that
07:07 - 07:10
are shared with kids and starting um,
07:10 - 07:12
all the way from preschool and so on.
07:13 - 07:17
And then my second one was these authors and illustrators share that Children who
07:17 - 07:20
read and view books often learn from that and find what they are.
07:21 - 07:21
And then
07:22 - 07:25
I included an image of all different kinds of Children,
07:26 - 07:29
all enjoying the same thing. And just having fun.
07:29 - 07:32
And I really love these three words that are included, diversity,
07:32 - 07:34
acceptance and inclusion.
07:34 - 07:37
I think that's really important for Children to know those meaning of that.
07:39 - 07:41
So I'll go into my analysis and my third topic.
07:41 - 07:44
So that for the first evidence it was,
07:44 - 07:49
I believe that learning that it's okay to be who you are no matter where you are from
07:50 - 07:54
is something that all Children should hear and believe
07:55 - 08:01
one shouldn't feel scared or be in fear to be different just because they might think
08:02 - 08:07
or see people different from them or others may see them as different.
08:08 - 08:13
And showing that in books allows more people to learn how to be accepting of others.
08:13 - 08:16
You don't want to make people feel like that, especially at a young age.
08:16 - 08:18
It's good for Children to learn that.
08:19 - 08:21
And then for my 2nd 1
08:22 - 08:25
I said for my evidence for Children
08:25 - 08:28
for sorry for a child to see themselves in a book
08:28 - 08:30
can help them learn about themselves.
08:30 - 08:33
Sometimes there are Children who aren't told from their family
08:33 - 08:37
members that it's okay to have your your interests and maybe
08:38 - 08:39
somebody else will have the same interests as you or
08:39 - 08:42
maybe you don't like something that somebody else like something
08:42 - 08:45
and we can see that in books a lot how, you know,
08:46 - 08:49
not everybody is the same, but or, you know,
08:49 - 08:51
some people don't have those people to tell them in their life.
08:51 - 08:53
You know, it's okay to be
08:53 - 08:55
different. It's okay to have
08:56 - 09:00
your own interest likeness just like it's okay to be your own person
09:01 - 09:05
and having that, especially for diversity since there are many cultures,
09:05 - 09:10
races and beliefs in this country, it's important because
09:11 - 09:15
we have to learn how to be accepting of others. And despite how sometimes it
09:15 - 09:16
might, it might always be easy,
09:16 - 09:20
especially when some topics are harder to speak about than others.
09:21 - 09:23
It's important that Children at a young age that
09:24 - 09:27
they have to be able to hear different opinions,
09:27 - 09:31
see different people and be accepting of other people because you just can't
09:31 - 09:35
be stuck and used to one thing because not everything is the same and
09:35 - 09:37
and they need to know that it's okay.
09:38 - 09:40
I'm going to my conclusion.
09:41 - 09:42
So I said how
09:43 - 09:45
when we show diversity in Children's literature,
09:46 - 09:50
we're allowing these young readers to learn how to identify their cultures,
09:51 - 09:55
tolerance towards others and even develop empathy.
09:55 - 09:58
And that's very important for Children to know because
09:59 - 10:03
diversity is a big thing all in this country especially,
10:03 - 10:04
and there's diversity from all around the world.
10:05 - 10:09
And there's a saying that I found from john hume
10:09 - 10:14
that says difference is the essence of humanity, different is an accident of birth
10:14 - 10:15
finished.
10:15 - 10:19
It should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict.
10:19 - 10:21
The answer to difference is to respect it
10:21 - 10:24
there in lies the most fundamental principle of peace.
10:25 - 10:26
Respect for diversity.
10:27 - 10:32
And I think that's very strong. So I really wanted to include that because
10:33 - 10:34
it's sad to see
10:35 - 10:35
um
10:36 - 10:42
where our world has gone too today, sadly, and I think that
10:42 - 10:44
we need to keep promoting
10:45 - 10:48
how we should be accepting of diversity.
10:49 - 10:49
You know, like
10:50 - 10:53
you don't need to hate on somebody just because they are different than you,
10:53 - 10:57
or they look different than you, or they sound different than you.
10:57 - 10:58
We all
11:00 - 11:03
most of us do have the same goals in life and maybe not exactly the same,
11:03 - 11:05
but we want to be successful.
11:05 - 11:07
We want to be happy, we want to find love.
11:08 - 11:11
And I think it's important for Children to learn this at a young age, you know,
11:11 - 11:13
that you don't want to be
11:13 - 11:16
the cause of someone's sadness or fear.
11:17 - 11:20
So for these Children to learn this at a young age is important.
11:20 - 11:21
And having this in literature,
11:21 - 11:25
especially since so many relate to so many literature.
11:25 - 11:26
Stories is very important
11:28 - 11:29
to finish up
11:30 - 11:32
also. Um, I were excited.
11:32 - 11:36
These are just an image I included and a lot of my were excited.
11:37 - 11:40
And then I also did include for my images as well.
11:41 - 11:41
There we are.
11:44 - 11:46
And thank you for listening to my research project
