00:01 - 00:03
to begin my story. I should tell you a little about me.
00:04 - 00:05
My name is Sarah Engel.
00:05 - 00:09
I'm 20 years old and I'm a student at Loyola University Maryland.
00:09 - 00:12
I was born and raised in the small town of Ocean City Maryland.
00:13 - 00:15
Growing up by the beach was such a blessing
00:15 - 00:16
as a child.
00:16 - 00:18
My family and I spent most of our weekends on a
00:18 - 00:21
stick island which is home to hundreds of domestic ponies.
00:22 - 00:25
This is our camper which I like to call my second home.
00:25 - 00:28
I spent my younger days playing in the sand and eventually
00:28 - 00:30
learned to surf and would spend all day in the ocean.
00:31 - 00:33
The picture on the right is me driving our boat which
00:33 - 00:36
my family drove for years until it couldn't be driven anymore.
00:37 - 00:39
I'm lucky to have experienced my early life by the ocean
00:39 - 00:41
and the beach will always feel like home to me.
00:42 - 00:43
Yeah,
00:44 - 00:48
I have a very small family with no aunts, uncles or cousins.
00:48 - 00:50
So my immediate family is very close.
00:50 - 00:55
I have an older sister named Caroline who was 22 and a younger sister named Gracie,
00:55 - 00:55
who is 17.
00:56 - 00:59
My sisters are my best friends and because our family is so small
01:00 - 01:02
we have become very close throughout the years.
01:02 - 01:05
My mom Kathy and dad Matt are also pictured,
01:06 - 01:08
they made sure to do a lot of family oriented activities when I
01:08 - 01:12
was a child and I owe them for the unconditional love and support.
01:12 - 01:13
They have given me
01:16 - 01:19
Growing up in a resort town meant getting a job at a young age.
01:19 - 01:21
I was 14 when I got my first job
01:21 - 01:24
selling donuts and carry out at Layton's family restaurant.
01:24 - 01:26
Two years later I got a different job
01:26 - 01:29
at waterman seafood restaurant running and preparing food.
01:30 - 01:33
All the kids in my hometown work during the summers to help local restaurants.
01:34 - 01:37
It certainly was rewarding having an income at such a young age,
01:37 - 01:40
but it also taught me how to become independent very quickly,
01:40 - 01:43
having the responsibility of helping run a restaurant.
01:43 - 01:46
So young developed my work ethic and independence and
01:46 - 01:48
has helped me succeed in academics and sports.
01:51 - 01:52
Speaking of sports
01:52 - 01:55
across has been a passion of mine since I was four
01:55 - 01:58
years old and I dreamed of playing at Loyola since 8th grade
01:58 - 02:01
across has also shaped me into who I am today.
02:01 - 02:03
Not only for the competitive aspect,
02:03 - 02:05
but because of the friendships and memories I have created.
02:06 - 02:08
I thank my parents for the achievements I have made
02:08 - 02:10
and for giving me the love and support they did.
02:10 - 02:14
And I thank my hometown for teaching me that hard work does pay off.
02:14 - 02:17
Although Baltimore is much different from the small town I am used to
02:17 - 02:21
my hometown has taught me how to thrive by working hard and having fun
02:21 - 02:24
and I always carry the town. I grew up with me
02:25 - 02:27
now, I am playing the sport I love at my dream school
02:27 - 02:29
and this summer I will continue to give back
02:29 - 02:32
to my hometown by working for a local restaurant
