00:01 - 00:02
Hey everyone.
00:02 - 00:05
So I wanted to talk to you all about digital citizenship
00:05 - 00:08
and before I get into some different components about digital citizenship,
00:09 - 00:11
I just want to let you guys know what it is. So
00:11 - 00:14
the digital citizenship is the interactions and the
00:14 - 00:16
roles that we take into a digital environment.
00:17 - 00:18
So when we go into the web,
00:19 - 00:22
what do we do there? How do we interact with others around the world?
00:23 - 00:24
That is digital citizenship?
00:24 - 00:30
Um It is for the safety of ourselves and others and we want to start promoting that
00:31 - 00:34
to adolescents and teens as early as possible um
00:35 - 00:38
to build an environment that is full of equality,
00:38 - 00:43
respect and tolerance of others um because technology is going to continue to grow
00:44 - 00:45
um and build,
00:45 - 00:48
we do want to make sure that you're aware that this is gonna be a lifelong process
00:49 - 00:52
um as new inventions and breakthroughs come through
00:53 - 00:58
um it'll be something that you will be required to kind of navigate in that new space.
00:58 - 01:01
So up first I want to talk about Ecuador access.
01:01 - 01:04
So anyone who accesses the opportunity for everyone
01:04 - 01:06
to have the same access to technology,
01:06 - 01:10
um we know what people are from different parts of the world.
01:10 - 01:12
Um There are also people who have different
01:12 - 01:17
socioeconomic status is and so they may not have the same access to
01:17 - 01:21
the internet or to technological devices that
01:22 - 01:24
you may have access to. So you want to be aware of that
01:25 - 01:28
because accessing the internet is essential
01:29 - 01:30
to being a good digital citizens
01:31 - 01:34
because you can't access even if you don't have the technology to do so.
01:34 - 01:38
and so that's why we as educators want to make sure that you're taking advantage
01:38 - 01:44
of what we provide so that you can have the ability to access different technology.
01:44 - 01:45
Um
01:46 - 01:49
and we know that technology isn't a one size fits all types of situations. So
01:50 - 01:53
um as you realize you need different things,
01:53 - 01:55
you never get the web please just let us know
01:55 - 01:57
um or whoever it may be in charge.
01:57 - 02:00
No because there are different things to make technology
02:00 - 02:02
use a little bit more accessible for you,
02:02 - 02:03
whether it's being
02:03 - 02:04
oh
02:04 - 02:09
reading assistance, visual assistance um or economic equipment.
02:09 - 02:12
Um there's a variety of things that can be done to make
02:12 - 02:13
um
02:13 - 02:15
your experience will be more user friendly
02:17 - 02:20
up next appropriate communication. So
02:20 - 02:23
one of the big functions of technology and
02:23 - 02:25
has been to make communication a little bit
02:25 - 02:29
easier um and a lot more effective um you
02:29 - 02:31
know you send a text message goes through instantly
02:31 - 02:32
and so
02:33 - 02:36
technology has revolution really revolutionized the way
02:36 - 02:38
that we have communicated with each other
02:39 - 02:40
um with that being said a lot of
02:40 - 02:43
more institutions and different organizations are moving to
02:44 - 02:45
really
02:45 - 02:49
um digitally, heavily heavily digital communities.
02:49 - 02:53
Um and so with that we're seeing a lot more people of different ages
02:54 - 02:55
access to the internet.
02:55 - 02:58
We're also seeing people from different areas
02:58 - 03:00
around the world access to the internet.
03:00 - 03:02
So as you're engaging with these individuals,
03:02 - 03:03
you want to make sure that you remember to
03:04 - 03:06
um remember that you are talking to real people.
03:06 - 03:09
Um These are real people with real feelings um
03:10 - 03:13
just like you just have to be in different locations and you can't see them.
03:13 - 03:16
Um So we want to be aware of that and we also want to
03:16 - 03:20
be careful of what we post because we never know who that may offend.
03:20 - 03:21
We never know
03:21 - 03:23
what message you may say
03:23 - 03:27
about us and we never know what effect it may have because once it's put out there
03:27 - 03:30
you can never really completely take it back even though you delete it.
03:30 - 03:33
Um there's always that possibility that there is some lingering
03:33 - 03:37
data that maybe um store it in a service somewhere.
03:37 - 03:40
Um there's a possibility that it may be screenshot it. And so
03:40 - 03:43
you never really know um
03:43 - 03:45
what impact you may be having on
03:45 - 03:46
the world
03:48 - 03:48
up next.
03:48 - 03:51
We have safety and ethics and so this is the right
03:51 - 03:54
of the recognition of rights and the responsibility to others.
03:54 - 03:59
So there's a lot of content on the internet to that is the
03:59 - 04:04
that is for you to use um some of it is protected with copyright,
04:04 - 04:08
some of the things we can use due to fair use.
04:08 - 04:10
Um and there's also things that are public demand
04:10 - 04:13
who pretty much is just access for everyone.
04:13 - 04:15
And so we want to be aware of those different policies
04:15 - 04:19
and how they come into play because those are legal um
04:20 - 04:21
obligations
04:21 - 04:26
also when you are um navigating the internet anytime you have a password you
04:26 - 04:29
want to make sure that you create strong passwords and you protect those passwords.
04:29 - 04:32
So meaning that you don't write your passwords down and
04:32 - 04:34
having them in a place where it is easily accessible.
04:34 - 04:36
You wanna make sure that you keep that
04:36 - 04:38
safeguarded and you don't share that information.
04:39 - 04:39
Um
04:40 - 04:43
Also be aware of um hackers and scammers,
04:43 - 04:46
there are a variety of scams um that are in motion all the
04:46 - 04:51
time that will steal your information and use it for nefarious purposes.
04:51 - 04:52
So you do want to be aware of
04:53 - 04:53
um
04:54 - 04:56
those types of situations
04:57 - 04:57
up next
04:58 - 05:00
diversity and awareness and this really goes back
05:00 - 05:03
to the communication um and being appropriate there
05:04 - 05:06
but you'll be interacting with so many people from different cultures,
05:06 - 05:07
generations,
05:07 - 05:11
geographical locations um and you just want to be aware that
05:11 - 05:14
there are differences as far as like how you talk,
05:14 - 05:17
how you communicate, what is basically normal
05:17 - 05:20
um for those individuals and so we want to be make sure that
05:20 - 05:24
we're aware of our own prejudices and biases and so making sure that we
05:24 - 05:28
don't impose any of those onto other individuals who are not from me
05:28 - 05:31
for or were from or look like where we like what we do.
05:32 - 05:37
Um and we also want to be an understanding of how those differences in our
05:37 - 05:39
affect our interactions with technology.
05:40 - 05:43
Um So what does it look like when someone from another country is on the web,
05:43 - 05:45
What what access do they have?
05:45 - 05:48
What are some things that we do that they don't do vice versa?
05:48 - 05:49
And so we want to be aware of that.
05:52 - 05:52
Um
05:53 - 05:58
Up next, I wouldn't assess a trend in technology which is virtual reality.
05:58 - 06:02
Um it's something that's been around for a while, but it's really picking up more
06:02 - 06:03
um speed and so
06:04 - 06:08
it's being used a lot of technology to I mean a lot of education to create
06:08 - 06:12
um really immersive experiences for students and teachers
06:12 - 06:14
um instead of going on the actual field trips,
06:14 - 06:16
you have the ability to use the VR headset.
06:17 - 06:17
Um
06:18 - 06:19
two
06:20 - 06:22
really engage in that environment. And so
06:22 - 06:23
um
06:24 - 06:27
even with this new technology we experience it's still important to make
06:27 - 06:29
sure that we're being good to do a citizens in this environment
06:30 - 06:31
um
06:33 - 06:35
and so making sure that we're doing what we need to
06:35 - 06:40
do to protect to ourselves and the others who engage in
06:41 - 06:43
that type of environment.
06:43 - 06:44
And so
06:44 - 06:45
that is
06:45 - 06:47
I want I want to share with you all today on
06:47 - 06:50
digital citizenship and I hope you all have a great day
