  1. Hello today we're going to be
  2. talking about positive behavior interventions and supports
  3. in the classroom.
  4. So as an educator, when a student is presenting challenging behavior,
  5. we must remember that that students use challenging behavior as
  6. a form of communication and in order for us to understand
  7. what the challenging behavior is trying to
  8. tell us.
  9. We must have a thorough understanding of the students and their social context
  10. and some interventions that can help us gain a thorough
  11. understanding and more knowledge of that student is an F.
  12. B. A. And A B. A. Pink.
  13. So an F. B.
  14. A focuses on gathering relevant data and information
  15. to determine the function of the behavior.
  16. And after NF B. A. Is conducted, educators can create a P. I. P.
  17. Which is a behavior intervention plan for that student.
  18. So a behavior intervention plan will focus
  19. the behavior intervention plan data will focus on
  20. when, where and why the challenging behavior is occurring.
  21. And it will also give us insight on the
  22. duration and the intensity of the challenging behavior.
  23. So after educators,
  24. after the BJP is conducted, educators can teach the students
  25. alternative positive alternative ways to behave that
  26. are appropriate and acceptable in the classroom.
  27. So some positive behavior support that can be included in the classroom
  28. to provide the most um positive behavior is
  29. creating a safe environment for your students,
  30. be
  31. the supportive person,
  32. being safe, being warm
  33. and being welcoming and engaging with your students. And in order to develop um
  34. to allow this we have we can establish routines that we students know what
  35. they are doing and what they're going to be doing next and they have
  36. a rough sketch of what their day is going to consist of,
  37. so they don't have anything getting thrown at them randomly.
  38. And also when you have a new class,
  39. it is important to establish rules and expectations early on that way,
  40. students know what they have to do and what is expected
  41. of them instead of just doing what they think is correct,
  42. but you're allowing them and telling them what there's, what's expected of them,
  43. so it's easier for them to, to behave and act in a positive way instead of acting.
  44. Now when they're not sure what they're supposed to be doing. So
  45. another way, another support is using um positive phrasing.
  46. So instead of saying don't do that or stop doing that or if you don't do this,
  47. I'm gonna take away this.
  48. Um, you should try stating things more positively. You can
  49. um so with that said, you can stay um the behavior that you want to see.
  50. So instead of entertaining or engaging in
  51. engaging with the student that is showing challenging behavior,
  52. you can look around the room and see which students is presenting
  53. positive behavior and instead of
  54. um regulating the challenging behavior,
  55. you can look at the positive behavior and say, hey, I really like that.
  56. So, and so is lining up quietly with their hands behind their back,
  57. waiting for us to waiting for everybody to line up.
  58. So we can head out instead of saying, hey, don't do that,
  59. you need to line up, or if now we're not going to lunch,
  60. that um
  61. positive phrasing is more effective than um
  62. talking negatively to a student.
  63. Um and also when we do see um positive behavior,
  64. it's best to reward them
  65. to keep um
  66. to keep
  67. having positive behavior in the classroom,
  68. and also when a student is having a hard time or it doesn't seem to focus,
  69. it's okay to give them brain breaks,
  70. um to allow them to refresh and come back and recollect their thoughts and come back.
  71. And these are a few supports and interventions um for the classroom.
