00:01 - 00:02
Hi, I'm Andy Schultz.
00:03 - 00:04
I'm in the math department here at Wellesley.
00:04 - 00:06
And for the next couple of minutes I'm going to
00:06 - 00:10
be talking to you about math placement at Wellesley here
00:10 - 00:10
at the college.
00:11 - 00:14
We teach six different courses in calculus, including classes in
00:14 - 00:18
differential calculus, integral calculus and multi variable in vector calculus.
00:19 - 00:21
Now the calculus course, that's right for you, depends both
00:21 - 00:24
on your mathematical experience before you get to Wellesley as
00:25 - 00:27
well as the goals that you want to achieve While
00:27 - 00:30
you're at Wellesley, the math placement questionnaire is one of
00:30 - 00:31
the tools that we use to help you find the
00:32 - 00:32
calculus course.
00:32 - 00:33
That's right for you.
00:35 - 00:38
The questionnaire itself is administered online is available in the
00:38 - 00:39
middle of the summer.
00:40 - 00:42
You'll be getting an email that includes logistical information about
00:42 - 00:43
the questionnaire.
00:43 - 00:48
Later on, the questionnaire runs the gamut of calculus.
00:49 - 00:51
It begins with questions from pre calculus.
00:52 - 00:55
It ask questions from differential and integral calculus and it
00:55 - 00:57
finishes off with a few questions from multi variable calculus.
00:58 - 01:00
The thing I want to emphasize at this point is
01:00 - 01:03
we know that everybody comes to Wellesley with a different
01:03 - 01:06
set of mathematical experiences and it's very likely that there
01:06 - 01:09
will be questions on the questionnaire that include mathematical topics
01:10 - 01:11
that you have never seen before.
01:11 - 01:13
If that happens, it is perfectly okay.
01:14 - 01:17
In fact on those questions, one of the options that
01:17 - 01:20
you have is to say, I don't know that's all
01:20 - 01:22
right. What we want to do with the questionnaire is
01:22 - 01:24
find the calculus course that's suited for you.
01:25 - 01:27
So if you run across questions that you have not
01:27 - 01:29
had prior exposure to, you can just get past them.
01:30 - 01:33
Instead spend your time working on the questions that involve
01:33 - 01:34
mathematics that you have seen before.
01:36 - 01:39
Now topics from the questionnaire are selected from pre calculus,
01:39 - 01:45
differential calculus, integral calculus and multi variable calculus in pre
01:46 - 01:51
calculus. The questionnaire ask questions that involve concepts like equations
01:52 - 01:58
of lines, algebraic simplification, basic Trigano metric functions and evaluation
01:59 - 02:03
of basic limits from differential calculus.
02:03 - 02:09
The questionnaire surveys concepts like derivative calculations involving familiar rules
02:09 - 02:13
like the chain rule or the quotient rule, Computation and
02:13 - 02:18
application of Tangent Lines, two equations and some standard applications
02:18 - 02:24
of differential calculus, things like optimization problems in integral calculus.
02:25 - 02:28
The questionnaire will ask questions about computations of anti derivatives
02:29 - 02:33
involving standard, anti derivative computational tools like u substitution and
02:33 - 02:38
integration by parts computations of definite integral, so called area
02:38 - 02:42
problem, as well as problems that involve series and taylor
02:42 - 02:47
series of familiar functions from multi variable calculus.
02:47 - 02:51
The questionnaire surveys concepts like line and path integral, directional
02:52 - 02:56
derivatives and concepts and applications related to directional derivatives and
02:57 - 02:59
computations involving iterated integral.
03:02 - 03:05
Again, the purpose of the questionnaire is for us to
03:05 - 03:08
find out the right calculus course for you.
03:08 - 03:10
So the objective that you should have on the questionnaire
03:10 - 03:12
is simply to do your best.
03:13 - 03:15
If you see questions that involve calculus that you have
03:15 - 03:17
not seen before, you don't need to be worried about
03:17 - 03:19
them and instead you should focus on the concept that
03:19 - 03:20
you have seen before.
03:21 - 03:22
Doing your best.
03:22 - 03:24
Also involves some sort of things that you might normally
03:25 - 03:27
expect. For example, don't start the questionnaire.
03:27 - 03:29
If you have an important appointment that begins 10 minutes
03:30 - 03:31
later, you want to make sure that you have the
03:31 - 03:33
appropriate amount of time to do your best work.
03:34 - 03:37
You also want to come into the questionnaire having reviewed
03:37 - 03:39
some of the concepts that you've seen before.
03:40 - 03:42
At the same time, it's not really worth spending a
03:42 - 03:45
full week reviewing all the mathematics that you've ever seen
03:45 - 03:45
in your life.
03:46 - 03:48
For fear that a certain kind of question might show
03:48 - 03:48
up on the questionnaire.
03:49 - 03:51
It's good to review things, but you don't need to
03:51 - 03:55
be cramming for this while I have your attention.
03:55 - 03:57
I'll also point out that calculus is not the only
03:58 - 03:59
thing that we teach in the math department.
03:59 - 04:01
So if you want to begin your math career at
04:01 - 04:05
Wellesley, doing classes that are not calculus classes, we have
04:05 - 04:06
options for you.
04:06 - 04:07
Every year.
04:07 - 04:10
We teach courses that are designed for first year students,
04:10 - 04:11
so called first year seminars.
04:12 - 04:15
And we also have a range of statistics courses, both
04:15 - 04:19
for students who have prior exposure to statistical concepts, as
04:19 - 04:22
well as students that want to begin statistics for the
04:22 - 04:22
first time.
04:24 - 04:27
Everybody at the math department is very excited for your
04:27 - 04:29
arrival on campus in the fall and we want to
04:29 - 04:31
do whatever we can do to make sure that you
04:31 - 04:34
are ready to begin your mathematical career at Wellesley on
04:35 - 04:35
the right foot.
04:36 - 04:37
I speak on behalf of all of my colleagues that
04:38 - 04:40
we are happy to talk with you whenever about any
04:40 - 04:42
questions that you have and we want to make sure
04:42 - 04:44
that you have a great experience here at Wellesley, both
04:45 - 04:48
in the math classroom and outside the math classroom, you
04:48 - 04:50
should feel free to contact any of us with questions
04:50 - 04:52
that you might have about how to get started.
04:53 - 04:56
My name again is Andy Schultz, My email address is
04:56 - 04:57
listed there if you would like to contact me personally.
04:58 - 05:00
But again, everybody in the math department is excited to
05:00 - 05:01
see you soon.
05:01 - 05:03
We hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer
05:03 - 05:05
and we're excited to see you in campus in the
05:05 - 05:05
fall.
