00:01 - 00:06
Hi all my name is Ruth peddicord and I am here today to introduce myself and tell you
00:06 - 00:10
about a literacy coaches purpose and why I'm currently
00:10 - 00:12
taking up some of your most valuable time.
00:14 - 00:19
I think at some point in all of our careers, we've had to ask ourselves why are we here?
00:19 - 00:22
We want to make a change, we want to make a difference.
00:22 - 00:25
But at the end of the day, are we really meeting our goals?
00:27 - 00:30
How are we going to help our students become successful when
00:30 - 00:34
our district is huge and only growing bigger each year.
00:34 - 00:37
Orange County public schools is the ninth largest school district
00:37 - 00:41
in the nation and the fourth largest district in Florida.
00:41 - 00:46
In 2021 we had an enrollment access of 200,000 students.
00:46 - 00:49
We now have over 200 k to 12 schools,
00:49 - 00:54
including 127 elementary schools, nine k to eight schools,
00:55 - 01:01
38 middle schools, 20 high schools and eight exceptional student centers,
01:07 - 01:12
oh CPS official vision and mission teachers and staff are here to support
01:12 - 01:17
a common vision and to set out objectives to complete our goals.
01:17 - 01:19
We are here because we want to see
01:19 - 01:23
our students and community flourish and be successful.
01:23 - 01:26
I have my own literacy vision
01:26 - 01:27
statement,
01:28 - 01:30
my own personal goal
01:31 - 01:33
as a literacy coach is to ensure that all my
01:33 - 01:37
students love to read and learn that they are curious and
01:37 - 01:42
excited about reading and writing and have the opportunity to reach
01:42 - 01:46
their full potential by becoming a successful reader and thinker.
01:46 - 01:51
Students will have a better access to more opportunities in life by
01:51 - 01:54
becoming a better reader and I want that chance for my kids,
02:01 - 02:03
we obtain these goals
02:04 - 02:06
by having certain
02:07 - 02:11
mission objectives and we can follow these steps.
02:23 - 02:26
This sounds like a lot of work and it is,
02:26 - 02:32
and we're going to do all this by going through collaboration and working together
02:34 - 02:39
and to do that, we have to establish some team norms and to do
02:40 - 02:42
this, we need to remember
02:42 - 02:45
to keep our own commitments to be clearer
02:45 - 02:48
with each other and to be flexible
02:48 - 02:53
and always remember that each of us can be difficult at times.
03:00 - 03:03
How will you become part of a high performing team?
03:03 - 03:06
Your literacy coach can help you with reading planning,
03:06 - 03:08
problem solving and so much more
03:17 - 03:19
help me to help you
03:20 - 03:23
many of those things you may already do,
03:23 - 03:27
so that doesn't prove that you need me just yet,
03:27 - 03:32
but have you ever felt at a complete loss on how to teach something in reading?
03:32 - 03:38
Have you ever felt so run down and have no new writing ideas?
03:38 - 03:41
Have you ever had a live reading lesson that just didn't work out and
03:41 - 03:45
now your students are staring blankly at you at the end of the lesson?
03:45 - 03:49
Well, that's what a coach is for, that's where I come in,
03:52 - 03:55
there are a few types of coaches, a facilitated coach,
03:55 - 03:58
assumes that the teachers already know everything.
03:58 - 04:03
A directive coach assumes that teachers know absolutely nothing or die,
04:03 - 04:05
a logical coach, there's somewhere in the middle
04:11 - 04:14
geological coach is a guide for the teachers hopping along
04:15 - 04:18
their path, that they want to go professionally.
04:22 - 04:23
We are partners.
04:23 - 04:26
We need to work together to build and maintain
04:26 - 04:30
a good professional relationship based on trust and learning
04:30 - 04:32
and a few other key principles.
04:35 - 04:36
Remember we're
04:36 - 04:38
equal partners in this coaching venture.
04:38 - 04:44
You the teacher have a say in what you learn and what you do in your own classroom.
04:44 - 04:50
I as a coach will expect to learn as much from you as you can expect to hear from me.
04:59 - 05:02
Working with your literacy coach is vital for the
05:02 - 05:06
success of artie and your students intervention journey.
05:07 - 05:09
This is one of the key parts of my job reaching the
05:09 - 05:12
students who are having difficulties reading
05:12 - 05:15
with a systematic support using diagnosis,
05:15 - 05:18
intervention and using progress monitoring together.
05:18 - 05:20
We can make a difference
05:24 - 05:29
when we begin the RT I process, we begin with diagnosis.
05:29 - 05:32
Many teachers, especially newer teachers, including myself.
05:32 - 05:36
When I was a brand new teacher may be confused on where to begin.
05:37 - 05:40
This graphic is a wonderful layout on the key factors of
05:40 - 05:44
assessment and where the county suggests you begin your assessments.
05:44 - 05:47
Primary begins at the bottom of this graphic
05:47 - 05:49
with assessing the
05:50 - 05:54
phonological and anemic awareness skills while the intermediate grades begin at
05:54 - 05:56
the top of the comprehension and they work their way down.
06:04 - 06:04
Yeah.
06:05 - 06:07
RT tears
06:07 - 06:12
For intervention Tier one is for all students in the general classroom,
06:12 - 06:15
working with their teacher like in all the tears,
06:15 - 06:19
it has assessments that keep monitoring the students.
06:19 - 06:23
These are the most general monitoring non specific and are given
06:23 - 06:27
at a wider range to get the baselines for all students.
06:27 - 06:30
These assessments are given a few times a year.
06:30 - 06:33
We in this county typically used hieratic.
06:33 - 06:38
We use it for both reading and math in reading. We use it for the
06:38 - 06:42
for data for the students, reading levels for their phonological awareness,
06:42 - 06:44
phonics, high frequency words,
06:45 - 06:49
vocabulary and both their informational and literature comprehension.
06:49 - 06:55
It gives us great placement as well as low medium or high in a number score.
06:55 - 06:58
And in the case of the first three
06:58 - 07:02
it tells us if they're tested out and what would be their highest level.
07:04 - 07:06
Tier two is extra help for students who are
07:06 - 07:10
not meeting the instructional level during regular classroom time.
07:10 - 07:12
Typically 20% of the grade.
07:12 - 07:16
Cool heart might require this additional level of support
07:17 - 07:18
In Tier two.
07:18 - 07:22
Progress is progress monitoring becomes more important and we
07:22 - 07:25
need to collect more data as teachers are given extra
07:26 - 07:30
giving students extra time working on the skills. They need extra help.
07:30 - 07:32
Teachers need to be monitoring for
07:32 - 07:35
improvement stagnation or slips.
07:37 - 07:40
Tier three is going to be our most supported tier.
07:41 - 07:43
It has the most
07:43 - 07:46
data collection as well.
07:47 - 07:51
Gathering as much data on these current or potential students is important to find
07:51 - 07:56
out their base levels to help show what they need to know for future meetings
07:57 - 07:58
and to help
07:58 - 08:00
find out their base levels.
08:00 - 08:04
It also helps to set them up in case of needing any further assistance
08:05 - 08:10
To potentially set them up for an IEP or 504 meetings if necessary.
08:18 - 08:24
By working together, we can reach many more students than we can working alone
08:26 - 08:32
as a literacy literacy coach. I am an equal, I am here to share and to learn.
08:32 - 08:34
I am not working with admin,
08:34 - 08:37
I am not here to bore you or read from the power
08:37 - 08:41
point and I am not here to judge you the classroom teacher.
08:46 - 08:49
This is a brief outline of the OCP s coaching
08:49 - 08:52
cycle that we will be using together this year.
09:02 - 09:06
Thank you again for letting me explain the details of my job.
09:06 - 09:12
I hope you have a better idea of what I believe in and what my job description truly is.
09:12 - 09:16
What questions do you have for me at this time.
