  1. Hi, I have a book.
  2. It is called The Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson.
  3. It has won the Newbery Award, the Coretta Scott King
  4. Award, and was also picked to be part of President
  5. Obama. Oh, book club Brown Girl.
  6. Dreaming is about her being raised in South Carolina and
  7. New York in the 19 sixties 19 seventies during the
  8. Jim Crow and the growing awareness of the civil rights
  9. movement. I have a pawn.
  10. That's how she tells her stories is through poems, and
  11. this poem is called The Candy Lady.
  12. On Fridays, our grandfather takes us to the candy lady
  13. house, even though our grandmother worries he's going to be
  14. the cause of our teeth writing right out of our
  15. heads. But my grandfather just laughs, makes us open our
  16. mouths to show the strong Urbi teeth we have inherited
  17. from his side of the family, the three of us
  18. stand there are mouths open wide, strong white teeth inside,
  19. and my grandmother has to nod, has to say they're
  20. lucky before sending us on our way.
  21. The candy ladies small living room is filled with shells
  22. and shells of chocolate bars and gumdrops, good and plenty
  23. and Ju Ju B's moon pies and necked away first
  24. lollipops and long red liquid strings.
  25. So much candy that it's hard to choose until our
  26. grandfather says Yeah, what you want, but I'm getting myself
  27. some ice cream.
  28. Then the candy lady, who is gray hair and never
  29. smiles, disappears into another room and returns a few minutes
  30. later with a wafer cone.
  31. Pale yell, lemon chiffon ice cream dripping from it outside.
  32. Even this late in the afternoon, the sun is beating
  33. down, and the idea of lemon chiffon ice cream cooling
  34. us even for a few minutes makes us all start
  35. saying that wants me to Daddy.
  36. Me too, Daddy.
  37. Me, too.
  38. The walk home from the cannula A house is a
  39. quiet one, except for the sound of melting ice cream
  40. being slurped up fast before it slides past service and
  41. on down our arms and onto the hot, dry rope.
  42. That point is from Jacqueline Woodson.
  43. Thank you for listening to me.
  44. If you want to read a good book, please pick
  45. up Jacqueline Woodson at your local bookstore or your local
