00:00 - 00:02
Hello, my name is Haley
00:02 - 00:02
Leibman
00:03 - 00:06
and today I'm going to be discussing assistive technology
00:06 - 00:09
in the context of um education.
00:11 - 00:12
So first of all,
00:12 - 00:18
what is assistive technology um and its relationship with accommodations.
00:18 - 00:23
So accommodations provide changes to educational curriculum for students
00:23 - 00:26
that may need extra help in specific areas.
00:26 - 00:27
Accommodations are
00:27 - 00:32
widely available and commonly used with assistive technology. Um
00:32 - 00:32
As
00:32 - 00:38
some of these examples can include speech to text special lighting, visual cues, um
00:39 - 00:42
different seating, all of these are assistive
00:42 - 00:47
or accommodations in terms of assistive technology. Um assistive technology
00:47 - 00:50
is used to help students who need
00:50 - 00:54
extra help in certain areas to help progress their learning skills.
00:56 - 00:56
Um
00:57 - 00:59
Now we'll discuss devices and services.
00:59 - 01:05
These are the two interdependent aspects that make up assistive technology
01:05 - 01:11
devices are the equipment and technology needed. So it could be ipads
01:11 - 01:15
um speech to text features, certain applications
01:15 - 01:19
um and then services include the support
01:19 - 01:21
um or services
01:21 - 01:24
necessary to use devices. So
01:24 - 01:27
teacher trainings, parent trainings um
01:27 - 01:28
meetings with the student,
01:28 - 01:32
anything to help support the use of the assistive technology.
01:33 - 01:38
So now we're going to take a little bit to look at um an example of a
01:38 - 01:41
high school sophomore
01:41 - 01:41
um
01:42 - 01:43
and her experience with
01:44 - 01:45
assistive technology.
01:45 - 01:49
So Jade is a high school sophomore and she struggles academically.
01:49 - 01:50
Um
01:50 - 01:53
This has been going on since elementary school. She has a
01:53 - 01:56
learning disability and a DH D which
01:56 - 01:59
causes her trouble when processing information,
01:59 - 02:02
retaining and recalling information as well as
02:02 - 02:05
selecting monitoring and using strategies.
02:06 - 02:08
Um So, although she's very smart,
02:08 - 02:13
uh she does have trouble getting her thoughts on paper in a cohesive manner.
02:13 - 02:14
Um
02:15 - 02:18
And even with tutoring sessions, homework,
02:19 - 02:23
nothing is seeming to fix this issue. So her IEP team
02:23 - 02:26
needs some help determining what to do. Um
02:27 - 02:31
And the two options would be remediation and compensation.
02:32 - 02:35
Um From my knowledge in assistive technology,
02:35 - 02:37
I do believe that Jade needs compensation.
02:38 - 02:42
So this would be adaptions to help Jade reach certain skills.
02:42 - 02:44
Um In her certain case,
02:44 - 02:47
I believe these would be different seating or
02:47 - 02:51
frequent breaks as these would help to accommodate the
02:51 - 02:55
um A DH D and LD that Shakespeare is experiencing.
02:56 - 03:02
Um remediation focuses more on skills and functions like vision.
03:02 - 03:08
While compensation focuses on using adaptions to help certain skills
03:09 - 03:09
um
03:10 - 03:12
using these adoptions,
03:12 - 03:15
she just may be able to better express her learning and get
03:15 - 03:20
her ideas on paper in that more cohesive manner that the teachers are
03:20 - 03:21
looking for.
03:21 - 03:22
Um
03:23 - 03:24
So some next steps
03:25 - 03:26
would be
03:26 - 03:30
creating the plan um and implementing the plan.
03:30 - 03:32
So within creating the plan, we could look at
03:32 - 03:36
identifying individuals, identifying devices and services
03:37 - 03:39
and then training and monitoring.
03:39 - 03:41
Um for implementing the plan,
03:41 - 03:46
we would want to implement assistive technology, not only at school,
03:46 - 03:48
but also at home,
03:48 - 03:51
we would want to train parents and guardians. Um
03:51 - 03:56
and then give Jade and those involved practice with the devices and services.
03:58 - 03:58
Um
03:58 - 04:03
with assistive technology, there can be some adverse reactions.
04:03 - 04:05
So this is what we will talk about next.
04:06 - 04:06
Um
04:07 - 04:09
Jade ends up getting a speech to text
04:09 - 04:12
software that helps her with her learning disability.
04:12 - 04:16
But one of the classmates parents complains
04:16 - 04:17
um
04:17 - 04:21
that it is unfair that Jade gets to use this sophomore while other students
04:22 - 04:23
do not.
04:23 - 04:25
Um as a teacher,
04:26 - 04:28
it is important to educate
04:29 - 04:31
families on this and um
04:32 - 04:34
let them know about learning
04:34 - 04:37
disabilities going on in the classroom and that
04:38 - 04:41
this does not allow Jade to
04:41 - 04:42
get by in any way
04:43 - 04:48
way than the other students, but rather allows it allows um
04:48 - 04:51
the gap to be closed between her and the other
04:51 - 04:54
students and allows Jade to be competent in her learning
04:54 - 04:57
and reach the level that other students are learning
04:58 - 05:00
in the same way that they are.
05:00 - 05:03
Um So really this would just for me would
05:03 - 05:06
be a conversation with myself and that parent.
05:07 - 05:07
Um
05:09 - 05:11
then moving on
05:11 - 05:12
the third piece we're going to look at
05:12 - 05:18
today is kind of evaluation of assistive technology.
05:18 - 05:19
Um
05:20 - 05:23
So we have been given some data before
05:23 - 05:25
Jade started using the speech to text software.
05:25 - 05:28
And after she started using it,
05:28 - 05:32
she started at 55% at week one and then went to
05:33 - 05:36
all the way to 85% by week 10.
05:36 - 05:40
And this was a measurement of her performance on written assignments.
05:40 - 05:41
Um
05:41 - 05:43
So overall, we would
05:44 - 05:48
collect this data, um plot it on a graph which we did
05:48 - 05:53
and then kind of evaluate the data. Um And from this evaluation,
05:53 - 05:55
we can say that Jade's
05:55 - 05:59
use of assistive technology was effector effective.
05:59 - 06:04
Um She is at 85% rather than 55 which shows
06:04 - 06:06
she's much closer to mastery than she was before.
06:07 - 06:09
Um She is not 100% which is
06:10 - 06:11
totally fine. As
06:12 - 06:16
many kids are, if they were at 100% we would have nothing to teach them. So 80
06:16 - 06:19
85% is a good place to be.
06:20 - 06:20
Um
06:21 - 06:22
And then
06:23 - 06:26
we would also just want to look at the data pattern,
06:27 - 06:30
so continue to monitor it.
06:30 - 06:35
Um And kind of see what this pattern is um
06:35 - 06:37
indicating and
06:37 - 06:40
how the IEP teams should respond.
06:40 - 06:41
So
06:42 - 06:44
the data pattern that we see shows that she
06:44 - 06:47
does significantly better when she has a T.
06:47 - 06:52
Um And then she tends to plateau when she gets to the average um
06:52 - 06:53
exceeding level.
06:53 - 07:00
Um but without a T, she really cannot get past a certain level and that certain level
07:00 - 07:03
is not even as high as her lowest level
07:04 - 07:04
without
07:05 - 07:10
or with assistive technology. So overall, we are seeing that assistive technology
07:10 - 07:14
is really allowing her to be confident in her learning
07:14 - 07:16
um grow
07:16 - 07:18
and just exceed through
07:18 - 07:21
boundaries that she was not even capable
07:21 - 07:23
of reaching without the assistive technology.
07:24 - 07:25
Um
07:25 - 07:26
So, to finish it off
07:27 - 07:31
this presentation about assistive technology is just an example of how
07:31 - 07:34
it can be used in the classroom and
07:34 - 07:35
how it can really
07:35 - 07:41
sprout someone's growth and learning and help close the gap between our students.
07:41 - 07:42
Thank you.
