00:00 - 00:00
Hello.
00:00 - 00:04
My name is Maria bahama and I'm going to be talking about adults with
00:04 - 00:09
disabilities focusing on autism here in this city of pretty much south florida.
00:09 - 00:10
Um
00:12 - 00:15
the first topic is going to be on education
00:15 - 00:18
and um as we know,
00:18 - 00:20
there is an increasing number of people
00:20 - 00:23
with autism who are actually attending college.
00:23 - 00:25
Some of them will require
00:25 - 00:27
more um
00:28 - 00:29
a special support
00:30 - 00:31
than others.
00:31 - 00:36
Um However, I did found out that on best colleges online dot com,
00:37 - 00:43
They tell you pretty much there's about 10 programs um in college programs that work
00:44 - 00:45
with people
00:46 - 00:47
that have
00:47 - 00:54
autism. Um and then I found this website called r brower dot com.
00:54 - 00:58
That's here in Broward County where I live in pompano Beach.
00:58 - 01:04
And they offer a cornerstone program where they do
01:04 - 01:07
not only teach you the regular classes at college,
01:07 - 01:10
but they also talk about life skills.
01:11 - 01:12
Um for example,
01:12 - 01:15
they can teach them um increased
01:15 - 01:21
self sufficiency how to volunteer community participation
01:22 - 01:23
and
01:23 - 01:25
I thought I was pretty great.
01:25 - 01:31
Also in this particular website, they do have an instant culinary institution,
01:32 - 01:35
which I found awesome because before I
01:36 - 01:40
attended UCF I actually
01:41 - 01:42
you still
01:43 - 01:45
be a chef and I went to le cordon bleu.
01:45 - 01:52
So I found it really amazing that they have that program for people there and
01:52 - 01:56
I got to talk to
01:57 - 02:04
chef Andres Marine who works at the culinary school.
02:04 - 02:07
And he mentioned to me that he looks working
02:07 - 02:09
with this type of students and making a difference.
02:10 - 02:12
Um once again I found great
02:13 - 02:14
and
02:14 - 02:15
also,
02:16 - 02:16
um
02:17 - 02:20
I talked to one of the students who told me that
02:20 - 02:23
this is a really organized facility that takes care of,
02:23 - 02:25
not only Children, but adults.
02:25 - 02:29
And I did find that it is very hard to find
02:29 - 02:34
places that offer education or any type of program for adult with autism.
02:35 - 02:39
Um, it's a lot of focus on the Children,
02:39 - 02:43
which is not the greatest because you know,
02:44 - 02:45
adults,
02:45 - 02:48
they need these types of programs as well.
02:48 - 02:49
Um,
02:49 - 02:52
and then to be an eligible participant,
02:52 - 02:58
uh, these are funded through the state developmental disability,
02:58 - 03:00
Medicaid waiver program
03:00 - 03:04
and you can either try to apply at the art power
03:04 - 03:09
through that or they can also attend on a private basis.
03:09 - 03:13
So I found that pretty interesting. Nice. Well,
03:14 - 03:15
that's all
03:15 - 03:16
I put, um,
03:16 - 03:21
the best colleges online dot com for they can find the
03:21 - 03:24
college programs on there And then art brower dot com has
03:24 - 03:31
all type of information and then art educates at 9545774119 where
03:31 - 03:34
they can give you more information on the different types of classes
03:34 - 03:39
that they offer for anyone that wants to join that school
03:40 - 03:45
as far as employment with for anyone with a disability autism.
03:47 - 03:48
I know for a fact here in florida,
03:48 - 03:52
we have publix who hires anyone with that is special needs and
03:53 - 03:54
I find that great.
03:55 - 03:57
I have a God's son who
03:58 - 04:05
has autism. He is on the spectrum. You can't really
04:05 - 04:07
tell he has it I guess.
04:08 - 04:09
Um, but
04:09 - 04:10
he,
04:11 - 04:15
yeah, I mean it's, I think it's great that he can get a job here.
04:15 - 04:17
Like this is one of the few companies that
04:17 - 04:20
I'm aware of that actually offers type of job.
04:20 - 04:23
This type that offers jobs to people like this.
04:23 - 04:27
But then I found career soars brower
04:27 - 04:29
um they
04:30 - 04:33
I have something called the ticket to important program because a lot of
04:33 - 04:37
times people with disabilities they don't want to work or they're afraid to go
04:37 - 04:42
to work because they don't want to lose their social security um that they
04:42 - 04:45
get through the government or they don't want to lose their health coverage.
04:46 - 04:50
But so career source Brower has something called
04:50 - 04:53
a ticket to work program and its for ages
04:53 - 04:57
between 18 and full retirement they can join this
04:57 - 04:59
program and they will not lose their S.
04:59 - 05:03
S. I. Or their health coverage. Um and in this program
05:04 - 05:05
they
05:05 - 05:08
will help them with job placement assistance
05:08 - 05:12
training and education were consistent incentive counseling.
05:12 - 05:14
So there's a lot of things that they can do for them.
05:15 - 05:20
And I found out um I spoke with this woman Melanie McGill.
05:20 - 05:26
Uh if anyone is interested, they can call her directly. So her phone number is 954-2
05:27 - 05:35
3830 extension 3119. And she can tell anyone more about this program and hot words.
05:36 - 05:37
And then I also found
05:38 - 05:42
something called the job accommodation network or jen
05:42 - 05:48
and basically it's a website for people with disabilities where they can
05:48 - 05:52
find out more information about like if they get a
05:52 - 05:56
job like how to negotiate accommodations at the workplace or like
05:56 - 05:58
what is the disabilities act and
05:59 - 06:05
what people can and cannot do or deny them of whatever right in the job place.
06:05 - 06:09
So I found that pretty interesting and good because I'm sure there's
06:09 - 06:14
a lot of discrimination in the workforce for people with disabilities.
06:14 - 06:17
So I think this website um
06:17 - 06:21
can really help people in this job accommodation network is great.
06:24 - 06:30
Now the topic of housing, I did not find a lot of options for housing.
06:31 - 06:37
Um but again the art brower dot com in the city that a man has two options.
06:37 - 06:40
The group home or the intermediate care facility.
06:40 - 06:44
So the group home, they have five group homes.
06:44 - 06:47
They provide residents for six adults each.
06:47 - 06:52
And in this particular group from the residents take an active role
06:52 - 06:54
in the maintenance of the house and they do have nursing stuff
06:55 - 07:00
of course there to be helping the people that live there.
07:00 - 07:02
And then they have something called the bark
07:02 - 07:05
housing which is the intermediate care facility.
07:05 - 07:11
They offer a 36 bed intermediate care facility and it offers nursing,
07:11 - 07:14
dietary pharmacological, psychiatric,
07:14 - 07:17
psychological up on other services as well.
07:17 - 07:18
24 7.
07:19 - 07:20
Um
07:21 - 07:30
It was hard to reach anyone to talk about what how like how do they choose the 36 bed,
07:30 - 07:33
how long do people get to stay?
07:33 - 07:34
Um
07:34 - 07:39
any information on pretty much how to be able to join the housing, but I did
07:40 - 07:42
find someone's
07:43 - 07:47
conduct information. His name, her name is chris Ella
07:47 - 07:51
sen far. Um She's a social service specialist
07:52 - 07:59
and her email is C. S. I. N. F. A. R. At art brower dot com.
07:59 - 08:08
Or she does have a phone number 9544745 to 77 extinction for 432.
08:08 - 08:12
I did leave several messages. Unfortunately she has not replied to me.
08:12 - 08:17
I'm sure that she is very busy. And on their website they do not state
08:18 - 08:23
like what requirements or how do they pick the people that get to stay in the
08:23 - 08:28
group homes or even in the bark housing because I'm sure there's a lot of people
08:29 - 08:30
that need these
08:30 - 08:32
services. So
08:33 - 08:34
um But
08:35 - 08:36
again
08:36 - 08:38
I found a lot of
08:38 - 08:43
Children services but for adults it was a lot harder.
08:43 - 08:46
Um Sad actually.
08:47 - 08:49
Um But yeah moving on.
08:50 - 08:51
Um so
08:52 - 08:56
when we talk about the recreational part for anyone
08:57 - 09:01
that is an adult with disabilities, again I didn't have a hard time again,
09:01 - 09:03
sorry, I keep mentioning that, but
09:04 - 09:05
once again,
09:05 - 09:08
well there was a dan Marino um
09:10 - 09:13
group I guess but with them
09:14 - 09:16
um It seemed more like
09:17 - 09:19
Adult but it was more like teenagers.
09:19 - 09:23
Like I think the highest I saw that they would help people, it was like 24
09:24 - 09:28
I like at the art brower dot com.
09:29 - 09:31
So they do have two programs that have the
09:31 - 09:35
adult day program and the older adult day program
09:36 - 09:40
And the older adult day program.
09:40 - 09:46
It's a program dedicated to someone that's 40 years and older that has a disability.
09:47 - 09:51
Um And they accommodate, you know,
09:51 - 09:54
pretty much their data to the person's choices and trans
09:54 - 09:58
and abilities of each individual and they do have nursing staff
09:59 - 10:01
Um up on other stuff there to help.
10:01 - 10:06
And then the day program, yeah, it just goes pretty much from 18 to 40
10:06 - 10:08
with us and recommendations.
10:09 - 10:10
And that includes leisure.
10:10 - 10:16
It didn't really talk a lot about what kind of leisure activities they did,
10:17 - 10:17
but
10:18 - 10:19
um
10:20 - 10:22
yeah, I'm assuming
10:22 - 10:26
it's like pretty much what they said um based on
10:26 - 10:29
the choices and interests and abilities of each individual's,
10:29 - 10:31
everyone is going to be different.
10:31 - 10:36
It all depends as well, like the spectrum that the person is on. Um
10:37 - 10:40
as far as you know, if they have autism. So
10:42 - 10:49
yeah, so like I'm really fine on that. And again it would be an arc brower dot com.
10:49 - 10:52
You would call there and they would tell you all the information.
10:53 - 10:53
Um
10:54 - 10:58
Again, I did not really see any other place or
10:59 - 11:07
that would offer actual activities, although I did think of the meat up website
11:08 - 11:11
just w w w meet up dot com
11:11 - 11:17
because there's a lot of people that create their own groups and I'm sure anyone that
11:18 - 11:19
wants to go in there,
11:20 - 11:24
they can do so and find people with similar interests and like adults with
11:24 - 11:30
disabilities that wanna go to a sport or they want to go through painting.
11:30 - 11:34
Or you can even create a group yourself if you want to on there,
11:34 - 11:36
which I think is pretty cool.
11:37 - 11:40
And yeah, that's that's it for my
11:40 - 11:42
presentation today
11:42 - 11:45
and just want to say
11:45 - 11:49
thank you very much and have a great day.
