  1. hi. Today, we're gonna be talking about product service management.
  2. I want you to think about the last product that
  3. you purchased.
  4. Um, did you stop and get a doughnut on your
  5. way to school this morning?
  6. Um, when was last time you that you bought an
  7. app for your phone or was last time you had
  8. your oil changed in your car?
  9. Do you ever think about who was responsible for making
  10. sure that we have these products and they have all
  11. of the features and benefits that we want need?
  12. Well, there is a lot of people that do a
  13. lot of work in this area.
  14. Managing products and service is effectively is vital to the
  15. success of a business or an organization, and they don't
  16. just appear on the market overnight.
  17. The polio vaccine took 10 years to develop and Google's
  18. search engine three years before they finally introduced that to
  19. the market and even someone like Taco Bell.
  20. They spend thousands of dollars researching a new product and
  21. experimenting and testing just to bring Doritos Locos tacos to
  22. customers. So let's describe that just describes the beginning.
  23. Products also go through a lot of stages of growth,
  24. maturity and decline.
  25. Now we're gonna look at two objectives.
  26. As we go through this unit, we're going to describe
  27. the product, service, management function and what it is.
  28. And then we're also gonna talk about the phases of
  29. product service management.
  30. Come this one.
  31. So what is product service management?
  32. It is the marketing function that involves obtaining, developing, maintaining
  33. and improving a product or service knicks in response to
  34. market opportunities.
  35. Now you notice that I said, Ah, product or service
  36. mix Well, actually, ah, product can be either a good
  37. or a service.
  38. A good is a tangible object that can be manufactured
  39. or produced for resale.
  40. An example of a good would be a desk chair,
  41. a track, a rose bush for garden.
  42. It's something I always like to think of it like
  43. this. Think of tangible that you can touch it, So
  44. if you could go into a store, pay for it,
  45. put it in your hands and bring it home.
  46. That's a good service.
  47. Is an intangible activity performed by other people in exchange
  48. for payment?
  49. That would be something like a manicure or Internet connection
  50. or, uh, an employee certain for you know to hire
  51. a company that you're looking for employees.
  52. Ah, haircut.
  53. And so I want you to be very clear on
  54. the difference between products and service is but know that
  55. they're treated very similarly when it comes to product service
  56. management. Now there's the steps for a NH internal product
  57. development is first, you're going to generate ideas.
  58. Brainstorm. Look at the market, see what's out there.
  59. Then you're going to screen those ideas and figure out
  60. which one would be the best to promote or go
  61. forward with.
  62. Those products have to be tested.
  63. This is probably one of the most expensive parts of
  64. that development, and research has to be done, and you
  65. have to conduct a business feasibility analysis feasibility.
  66. That means that it is worth the money.
  67. If something is feasible, it means to go for you're
  68. going to get your money back.
  69. You need to develop the product and then again, test
  70. market the product and a much larger scale and finally
  71. commercialize that product and put it out on the market.
  72. So that is just a introduction to what, ah, product
  73. service management.
  74. It is.
  75. So, um, and as we move forward, through this unit,
  76. we're going to take a closer look at each step
  77. because as one of the functions of marketing, it is
  78. imperative for businesses to be successful at product service management.
