  1. Hi, everyone.
  2. Welcome to Week six.
  3. Now we're getting along.
  4. We're getting close to the midterm exams.
  5. So this week, as you see hearing in lessons or
  6. classes 11 and 12, we need to We need to
  7. focus on what you're going to need to do for
  8. the exam next week.
  9. Now, you know by now that the exam is going
  10. to happen either on a Monday or Tuesday next week
  11. in week seven.
  12. And, um, I've already started telling you about the date
  13. and time and trying to arrange to make sure that
  14. we don't have any overlaps.
  15. Um, with with you to try to make sure that
  16. you have a space to take the exam, Um, the
  17. first thing I want to say is is today in
  18. these in these lessons is I want to talk about
  19. the actual exam format.
  20. And then after I talk about that, I want to
  21. go over just the basic main ideas of each of
  22. the articles just to remind you, you know what, what?
  23. We're what we covered, and and to get you focused
  24. on exactly what what was said since it was, many
  25. of these articles were from earlier in the semester and
  26. so you may not remember clearly.
  27. Anyway, I'm going to review, and then finally, I'm going
  28. to go over your questions that you have again.
  29. These are the questions that I asked you to form,
  30. um, during, you know, while you were studying each of
  31. the four articles, or if you did them near the
  32. end, then I then I put those together for you.
  33. Um, yeah.
  34. Okay, so the midterm exam format Before I start talking
  35. about that, I need to kind of give you a
  36. basic idea about why I Why are exam format is
  37. the way it is?
  38. Okay, Um, basically, there's a There's an approach that I
  39. have. You know, I don't know if you've ever heard
  40. that expression, an approach, but before you do something before
  41. you actually break it open and start doing it, you
  42. think about how you're going to do it.
  43. So you you kind of kind of scratch your chin
  44. or you scratch your head and you go, How do
  45. I want to do that thing?
  46. You know what's the best way to do it?
  47. And, uh, it's usually as a teacher.
  48. It's very kind of limited when it comes to exams,
  49. at least in our department, where we have many teachers.
  50. You know, there are many teachers who teach college English,
  51. and so all the teachers have to kind of fit
  52. general format.
  53. So we have consistency in the department.
  54. So there are certain restrictions that we have in limitations,
  55. Um, and that I should say that used to be
  56. very strong.
  57. It used to be that we would have an exam
  58. when we gave the midterm exam.
  59. When I would talk about the midterm exam format, it
  60. would be identical to all the other college English professors
  61. exams, so we would all have the exact same exam.
  62. And so, of course, we worked very hard to make
  63. an exam that was, you know, that was good, but
  64. that we also I can say we also had to
  65. settle on a kind of format that that was not
  66. actually the best for educationally.
  67. This is my opinion, right?
  68. So we had to kind of make agreements and kind
  69. of make compromises about how we did it.
  70. And we and our exams were good and solid, but
  71. they were very high stress exams.
  72. The exams were done very quickly.
  73. If you were in the classroom maybe five years ago,
  74. you would have a very strict exam for 50 minutes
  75. and you'd have to take it and you'd either get
  76. the answer.
  77. When you're writing your answers, you get the answer right
  78. or wrong, and that's it.
  79. And the questions were very detailed, and they wanted to
  80. make sure that you knew exactly every single little detail.
  81. And you had to kind of basically be able to
  82. interpret the questions in the same way that the professor
  83. talked to you about.
  84. Okay, I saw that.
  85. I do see that style is very limited.
  86. I know there are professors here in our department who
  87. continue to take to give those types of exams, but
  88. that's not my style.
  89. Okay, I have a long history of teaching, and I
  90. have a background in in testing and other other areas.
  91. Having gotten a PhD, I've gone through a lot of
  92. different ways and approaches to give exams, and I can
  93. tell you that this exam format that I've settled on
  94. is the best for you and for me, but especially
  95. the best for you.
  96. It's not an exam that is the easiest for me
  97. to mark.
  98. It's kind of difficult.
  99. It takes a long time.
  100. It's time consuming for me, which is not good, but
  101. I don't mind, because you what do you get?
  102. As a student, you get a nice, comfortable, relaxed period
  103. to take the exam of two hours.
  104. Okay? And then you also get to take the exam
  105. with using your materials.
  106. So this exam is not a memorizing exam at all.
  107. The old style exams where you had a 50 minute
  108. exam, you had to kind of memorize quite a bit.
  109. And you had to remember a lot of what was
  110. said, exactly what was said.
  111. And then you had to remember and be able to,
  112. you know, find the details between the different choices.
  113. My exam is a two hour space, so it's very
  114. comfortable. Okay, now, I could have put that exam into
  115. our class period.
  116. Time. Um, let me talk about that.
  117. I'll talk about that a little bit in a minute
  118. when I talk about the exam format, but generally we
  119. in this semester, we have not had to had to
  120. worry about our actual class times.
  121. Well, as you know, we've just I've made these lesson
  122. videos and you've had discussions with your group and activities
  123. that you do whenever you want to during the week.
  124. Okay. But of course, for the exams, I need to
  125. have you take the exam for a specific amount of
  126. time. I can't just give you an entire week to
  127. take the exam.
  128. That's too much.
  129. So what I'm doing is giving you the maximum amount
  130. of time I can.
  131. I can allow for you to take the exam.
  132. And that time that I'm choosing is based upon what
  133. our classroom time would have been or would be is
  134. right now.
  135. Right? So Monday, Monday and Tuesday is when we're going
  136. to have the exams.
  137. Okay, take a look at this.
  138. I think that I've I've mentioned to you guys before
  139. that whenever you send an email to me, I I
  140. emphasize very strongly that you please put your team color
  141. in the subject of your email.
  142. So if you are Red team, please put Red Team
  143. Blue team or Yellow Team.
  144. Okay, now, that's because I actually teach three college English
  145. classes to different majors.
  146. Okay, So yellow team is different than red team and
  147. blue team.
  148. But you all generally are within the kind of format
  149. of college English.
  150. And those are kind of rules general rules that my
  151. whole department has to follow.
  152. But each of you are different in and how you
  153. have your class.
  154. Okay, but but the format of the exam is the
  155. same as all as all of my college English classes
  156. need to be.
  157. Have to be the same format.
  158. Okay, So I'm going to talk about all three of
  159. you guys together in this introduction, because again, this applies
  160. to all of you.
  161. But the information is a little different, depending on which
  162. team you're in.
  163. Okay, so you can see the midterm exam will be
  164. on Monday, the 12th next Monday, the 12th from 9
  165. a.m. to 11 a.m. If you are in the yellow
  166. team. Okay.
  167. So, yellow team, that's your to our space on Monday,
  168. then the next day, Tuesday, next Tuesday from 9 a.m.
  169. to 11 Red team will take their exam for two
  170. hours, and then later, blue team will take their exam
  171. from 12 to 2 as well.
  172. Okay, so Oh, by the way, all these exams are
  173. different exams.
  174. They're all college English exams, but they're all different.
  175. But you all have two hours to take your exam.
  176. Okay? I've talked with again.
  177. Hopefully by now.
  178. I've already settled talking.
  179. I've negotiated or tried to, you know, work out how
  180. how you can take the exam if your class has
  181. an overlap.
  182. If you have another class that overlaps with a two
  183. hour period that I've chosen.
  184. Okay, so I say this in yellow here again.
  185. If you're now just realizing that you have a conflict
  186. and you haven't emailed me before, do you realize that,
  187. for example, maybe you have a If you're yellow team
  188. and you have a class that goes from, um goes
  189. from eight o'clock to 9.
  190. 15, then that's a 15 minute overlap.
  191. You should have already talked to me and let me
  192. know. And I should have already arranged for you to
  193. take the exam in a different way.
  194. Okay. Um, same for other classes.
  195. Like Red Team and Blue Team.
  196. I I I know.
  197. I've already talked to a number of you.
  198. A few of you, I should say, not very many
  199. who have overlaps, usually about 10 minutes, and I've arranged
  200. for you to make sure you get those extra 10
  201. minutes. Okay?
  202. So that everyone will have a two hour exam regardless.
  203. Okay, so if you haven't told me already, if you
  204. haven't realized you need to call.
  205. You need to email me now.
  206. You need to send an email to me right now.
  207. Push the pause on this video and send the email
  208. and start talking to me because the exam is one
  209. one week away or less, depending on when you're watching
  210. this. Okay, um, now, again, this exam format for all
  211. three of my college English classes is the same general
  212. general format, which is that it's an open book exam.
  213. Okay, we don't have a book, but open book exam
  214. is an expression that means you can use any of
  215. the course materials that we've gone over to take the
  216. exam. Okay, so that's why you need to.
  217. That's one of the reasons that you need more time
  218. to look through your materials.
  219. It takes time.
  220. You can't just you don't have to memorize everything.
  221. You can actually go look at it and take your
  222. time and figure it out.
  223. So there's no real again I don't like high stress
  224. testing. I like for you to have time to show
  225. where your true ability is.
  226. And so I give you that to our space and
  227. I let you use your course materials.
  228. So that means any of the lesson videos.
  229. I don't I do not believe that you have time
  230. to go check the videos and open and listen to
  231. me talk again.
  232. So please don't waste your time watching videos.
  233. But you can go look at the pdf's from the
  234. videos. You can go look at any of the handouts.
  235. You can, of course, Go look at the articles themselves.
  236. You can look at our questions.
  237. You can look at your homework answers from your from
  238. yourself. Studies.
  239. You can look at anything you want as long as
  240. it is your own materials.
  241. Okay, that's key.
  242. You are not allowed.
  243. As I say here, you're not allowed to in any
  244. way use other people or other resources to take the
  245. exam. This is an open book exam.
  246. It is not a shared exam, so you're not allowed
  247. to communicate in any way with any other person now.
  248. That means you cannot ask your brother to help you
  249. to write a sentence.
  250. You cannot ask your mother.
  251. You can, of course, cannot talk to anyone during the
  252. actual two hour period about the exam.
  253. You're not allowed to discuss the exam for that two
  254. hour period.
  255. Okay. You need to take the exam by yourself.
  256. Because it's really you know, this exam is for you
  257. and you alone.
  258. Okay. So you can use any of the course materials
  259. you want that we've gone over anything I've given you
  260. any handouts you can use.
  261. No problem.
  262. But you are not allowed to in any way get
  263. help from anyone else.
  264. And you're not allowed to go to the Internet to
  265. grab information that can help you.
  266. Okay, I let you if you want to use dictionary
  267. dot com and go look on the Internet, I will
  268. let you do that.
  269. What I mean is, do not use anything that creates
  270. for you.
  271. You cannot use any kind of creator.
  272. Okay, so that means translation.
  273. You know, translation programs where you type in Korean and
  274. it gives you English.
  275. No. You are not allowed to use any of those
  276. kinds of services.
  277. Nothing that creates for you you cannot use any of
  278. that. You can use the Internet again like a dictionary
  279. dictionary dot com Like a resource that you can actually
  280. look at information.
  281. You can go look at the original article and go
  282. look at the links again.
  283. I don't recommend you doing all that extra stuff because
  284. you don't have that much time for these questions.
  285. But you can use the Internet as a passive source
  286. of information.
  287. But you cannot use anything on the Internet to generate
  288. or to create your sentences for you.
  289. Okay, so please do not use that.
  290. You cannot use your computer programs on your computer to
  291. translate. You need to type your original English answers yourself.
  292. Your English sentences must be typed and created by you,
  293. not by anyone else.
  294. Not with the help of anyone else or the help
  295. of any creator, like a translation program or any kind
  296. of sentence creator.
  297. Okay, you really need to show me what you can
  298. do in English yourself, creating it by yourself for two
  299. hours. Okay?
