00:00 - 00:04
Hello. My name is Jonathan Wagner and I decided to
00:04 - 00:07
do cybersecurity sales manager for my research project.
00:08 - 00:09
So a little bit about me.
00:09 - 00:11
Before I begin, I am also a sales manager.
00:12 - 00:15
I started um just as a door to door sales
00:15 - 00:17
rap, I worked my way up the ranks as most
00:18 - 00:21
entry level sales reps do um and I ended up
00:21 - 00:22
being a sales manager pretty early.
00:22 - 00:23
I'm pretty young to be a sales manager.
00:24 - 00:26
I'm actually the youngest in my region and the youngest
00:27 - 00:29
in my division and I'm the second youngest in the
00:29 - 00:33
company. So um I feel very blessed and thankful for
00:33 - 00:36
that opportunity but it's also taught me a lot as
00:36 - 00:39
well and that's why I wanted to do some research
00:40 - 00:42
on other sales manager positions in the area.
00:43 - 00:44
So I'm going to share with you what I found
00:45 - 00:47
but that was a little bit about my background, um
00:47 - 00:49
a little bit about me and my experience and what
00:49 - 00:50
I can kind of bring to the table to this
00:51 - 00:51
research project.
00:52 - 00:55
Yes. So as I was looking at a lot of
00:55 - 00:59
sales opportunities um throughout the area, what I found is
00:59 - 01:00
that there was a lot of lateral or even negative
01:01 - 01:03
movement. Um for any sales positions.
01:04 - 01:08
Sales manager positions that's in my same market but also
01:08 - 01:10
that requires the same level of education that I do.
01:11 - 01:12
I don't have a bachelor's degree.
01:12 - 01:13
Obviously that's what I'm working towards.
01:14 - 01:15
Only have a couple associates degrees.
01:16 - 01:21
So I quickly realized and I'll give two examples of
01:22 - 01:26
the different places that I looked at.
01:26 - 01:26
So E.
01:27 - 01:31
G. Innovations for example um is a sales manager opportunity.
01:32 - 01:33
That was one of the better ones that I saw
01:34 - 01:38
that on average they made around 75 to 100 k.
01:38 - 01:38
Per year.
01:39 - 01:39
That's fantastic.
01:39 - 01:40
That's great.
01:41 - 01:44
Um Another one was mint aesthetics and the average sales
01:44 - 01:46
manager makes anywhere from 32 K.
01:47 - 01:48
200 k per year.
01:48 - 01:52
So that's both of those are gonna be probably negative
01:52 - 01:54
movements for me, just because my company has treated me
01:54 - 01:55
very, very well.
01:56 - 02:01
Um and you know, my company treats me well, why
02:01 - 02:02
why would I move?
02:03 - 02:06
So at that, at that point in time I thought
02:06 - 02:08
to myself, you know what, maybe I should start looking
02:09 - 02:12
at places that are going to be in a different
02:13 - 02:13
market completely.
02:14 - 02:17
So that's when I decided to do some research and
02:17 - 02:19
I came across cybersecurity sales management.
02:20 - 02:22
Um I was really interested in it and I knew
02:22 - 02:24
some people at my church that were in cybersecurity sales.
02:25 - 02:28
So I reached out to them and asked to have
02:28 - 02:29
an interview with their manager.
02:30 - 02:32
I had they pulled some strings for me and I
02:32 - 02:33
had to do some things, but I was able to
02:34 - 02:37
to get a hold of um the national sales director
02:37 - 02:39
of IBM Douglas Bruce.
02:39 - 02:43
So um after reaching out to him, very, very busy
02:43 - 02:46
guy, decided to do a meeting over Microsoft teams instead,
02:46 - 02:47
it wouldn't be more than 45 minutes.
02:48 - 02:51
Um and he said it was okay, so in the
02:51 - 02:55
interview I wanted to ask three major questions, what were
02:55 - 03:00
the current cybersecurity, sales trends in that market communication in
03:00 - 03:01
the workplace and also industry concerns.
03:03 - 03:05
So I'm gonna go over those real quick with you,
03:06 - 03:07
just kind of share what I've learned.
03:07 - 03:10
So the first question I asked him was Covid caused
03:10 - 03:14
many markets to get shifted in unexpected directions and how
03:14 - 03:18
has it impacted his business, And his answer was pretty
03:18 - 03:22
simple. Um Covid hasn't really um a lot of what
03:22 - 03:23
they do is a virtual anyway.
03:24 - 03:25
Um the only thing that they had to do is
03:25 - 03:28
instead of doing in person meetings for potential clients, they
03:29 - 03:31
had to move over to virtual slide deck presentations, which
03:31 - 03:33
they were already in the process of doing anyway.
03:34 - 03:39
Um another one was over the last 10 years, it's
03:39 - 03:41
been a high spike in cyber security positions.
03:42 - 03:43
Is that going to continue to grow is they're going
03:43 - 03:47
to become something that's declining and it becomes something that's
03:47 - 03:47
more lucrative.
03:48 - 03:50
And he said the answer is all of the above.
03:50 - 03:55
Um There is increasingly more need for knowledge for a
03:55 - 03:58
person to know in order to be successful here because
03:59 - 03:59
you have to keep up with the times.
04:00 - 04:05
But i There's also an equal increase in the amount
04:05 - 04:07
of need for sales reps.
04:07 - 04:10
So it's a booming business but they're kind of in
04:10 - 04:14
a catch 22 with both a need to increase the
04:14 - 04:19
knowledge but of of the reps that they have, but
04:20 - 04:23
also to recruit reps with a high level of knowledge
04:23 - 04:23
which is really difficult.
04:24 - 04:26
So it's it's a it's a fast growing business is
04:26 - 04:26
very exciting.
04:28 - 04:31
Um Then I asked him how the typical career ladder
04:31 - 04:34
would work in companies such as IBM.
04:35 - 04:37
Yeah. Is is there room for internal movement?
04:38 - 04:39
How does that go?
04:39 - 04:41
And he says honestly there's not a lot.
04:42 - 04:45
Um So at this level you kind of really differentiate
04:46 - 04:50
yourself as a sales rep or a sales manager or
04:50 - 04:51
they call it sales experts over there.
04:52 - 04:54
So the skill sets are very different.
04:54 - 04:57
Managing a sales team is very different than actually selling.
04:58 - 05:02
Um In fact sales managers and sales staff make equal
05:02 - 05:05
amounts and a lot of times because sales staff wars
05:06 - 05:08
on commission they can actually make more than a sales
05:08 - 05:10
manager. Yeah so that's kind of interesting.
05:11 - 05:14
I didn't know about that, it's very different in the
05:14 - 05:14
market that I'm in.
05:16 - 05:18
So um next one was communication in the workplace.
05:19 - 05:25
So going back to um I'm actually gonna just use
05:25 - 05:27
one of the examples in the questions I ask because
05:27 - 05:28
I feel like it was the most relevant and I'm
05:28 - 05:29
running short on time here.
05:30 - 05:33
Um One of the toughest jobs in the company is
05:33 - 05:37
is management because they have to relay company objectives to
05:37 - 05:40
a staff and their job isn't to get the staff
05:41 - 05:43
to understand why it's just to do it.
05:43 - 05:47
So how do you communicate company objectives um to the
05:47 - 05:49
staff that are lower in the totem pole.
05:50 - 05:53
And he said it's very simple communication is going to
05:53 - 05:54
be the same no matter where you're at.
05:55 - 05:58
Um We have objectives that we have to hit as
05:58 - 06:03
a company and the staff um lower gets paid on
06:03 - 06:06
hitting their own metrics and it is tricky sometimes to
06:06 - 06:08
align your needs and the company's needs with the staff's
06:09 - 06:10
needs really.
06:11 - 06:12
That comes from internal structuring.
06:13 - 06:14
If you do, you're good if you do a good
06:14 - 06:15
job on that.
06:16 - 06:20
So um you know, because if if if your reps
06:20 - 06:22
are making money then you're making money and the company
06:22 - 06:23
is making money.
06:24 - 06:26
The last question I wanted to ask real briefly was
06:27 - 06:29
a lot of times there's issues and unethical selling.
06:29 - 06:31
What is this where your thoughts on this?
06:32 - 06:35
So he said that there is unethical selling in the
06:36 - 06:38
workplace in a hi company.
06:38 - 06:39
That being said they're not successful.
06:40 - 06:42
What will happen is a lot of these companies based
06:43 - 06:48
there um uh commission on long term um maintenance of
06:48 - 06:48
a customer.
06:50 - 06:52
And if you don't retain your customer, you don't get
06:52 - 06:55
paid. So anyway, that's my presentation.
06:55 - 06:56
Thank you very much for listening.
06:57 - 06:58
I learned a lot and hopefully you learned a little
06:58 - 06:58
bit as well.
