00:01 - 00:01
Yeah
00:02 - 00:02
okay
00:02 - 00:08
Good afternoon. My name is Dalton Atkinson. This is my observation lab for 10 431.
00:09 - 00:12
I've been to the mall this weekend and as you can see five of
00:12 - 00:21
these um businesses are run by corporation and one is not which is love 315
00:22 - 00:27
so enjoy my presentation today. So the first one I went to was J. C. Penney's.
00:27 - 00:32
And before I enter J. C. Penney's you know JC Penny's always have,
00:33 - 00:36
what I noticed is that they always have a lot of things going
00:36 - 00:41
on in the front and you know they always have the machines and
00:41 - 00:44
the nice vibe when you enter.
00:45 - 00:54
But as you go in um I realized that environment music um was very low
00:54 - 01:01
and they were doing a lot of arrangements as you know this weekend as Father's Day as
01:01 - 01:05
um you can see there buy the products that they're selling.
01:06 - 01:09
Um There's a lot of emphasis on Father's thing,
01:09 - 01:13
so happy Father's Day as to who are watching this.
01:13 - 01:15
Alright so the personnel,
01:15 - 01:22
there was not a lot of personnel and if you were in need of something at that time
01:22 - 01:27
they were just busy, you'd have to disturb them because there's nobody designated
01:28 - 01:31
to help you because there is a small team and
01:31 - 01:35
they're just focusing on getting their stuff on this thing
01:35 - 01:41
as you can see there was not a lot of customer on the footpath they were there
01:41 - 01:44
and what I find interesting is that the customers
01:44 - 01:47
that were there at the time they're Canadians.
01:48 - 01:51
Um So yes I'm right up here in Watertown and a lot of people come
01:51 - 01:54
across the border and these shops that's
01:54 - 01:57
fun to have different culture coming across.
01:57 - 02:03
Um so that was my experience. I felt welcome. Um I actually got a credit card there
02:04 - 02:04
as well.
02:07 - 02:09
So my next stop was american Eagle.
02:10 - 02:12
I do not have a lot of picture
02:12 - 02:17
because you know, I, I feel like they had the best display before I entered,
02:17 - 02:18
the doors were open.
02:19 - 02:24
But when I went inside, you know, as you can see by the picture of the environment,
02:24 - 02:26
it was just not welcoming.
02:26 - 02:31
Nobody recognized that I was there and I just did a loop for 15 minutes.
02:31 - 02:35
Nobody came to help. The store had only four personnel,
02:36 - 02:40
you know, like I said, I was not acknowledged, the product the store sells,
02:40 - 02:43
they specialize in male and female apparel.
02:43 - 02:45
They're nice. American Eagle.
02:46 - 02:50
I've shopped there before, but my experience is almost kind of similar
02:50 - 02:51
all the time.
02:52 - 02:53
And
02:54 - 03:00
there were one other customer there that was not being attended to either.
03:00 - 03:04
And what I realized what I find interesting is that um,
03:04 - 03:08
they have a lot less amount of stuff on sale.
03:11 - 03:18
My next stop would have been lost. 315. I like the signage. It pulled me in
03:19 - 03:20
and
03:21 - 03:23
they do not have
03:24 - 03:25
a lot of space,
03:25 - 03:28
but the way they're display is set up and what they
03:28 - 03:31
put in the front makes me want to go and their,
03:31 - 03:38
their music is not poppy like all the stores that um does pop music
03:38 - 03:43
when they're in the environment and I like that a little bit of difference.
03:43 - 03:47
And the personal was one person out there which was the owner
03:48 - 03:50
and they are specialized in
03:51 - 03:54
male plaid shirts and
03:55 - 03:59
different style shirts that you wouldn't find in the average store.
03:59 - 04:03
So you know the curb cut shirts and all that stuff.
04:03 - 04:06
There were a lot of customers moving in and out.
04:06 - 04:09
So what I find interesting is that stores
04:10 - 04:15
that have a difference in what they offer, they do have more traffic.
04:16 - 04:19
I know the observation that I made that I find interesting
04:19 - 04:27
is that this store was formed in 2019 and has somehow survived
04:27 - 04:30
the pandemic as a startup.
04:31 - 04:31
So
04:32 - 04:33
I find that interesting.
04:36 - 04:39
The next door I went to was best buy
04:39 - 04:45
um they are known for electronics the environment. Um
04:46 - 04:49
what's good, they have high, very high ceilings
04:50 - 04:51
and um
04:51 - 04:54
you know kind of have this industrial look
04:55 - 04:59
the personnel, they were all centralized in the building.
04:59 - 05:02
So every angle you go to you would um
05:03 - 05:06
you get to be seen and I like that you know you
05:06 - 05:09
don't have to be walking and waiting forever to get seen.
05:11 - 05:18
The products they offer you know phone accessories, tablet, you know computer,
05:18 - 05:22
typical electronics and specialized electronics.
05:22 - 05:26
And what I find interesting is that
05:26 - 05:29
that I never knew was that they had there
05:29 - 05:31
own little geek squad there
05:32 - 05:37
um customers were you know being taken care of by the personnel,
05:37 - 05:39
they were walking around observing stuff.
05:39 - 05:40
And
05:40 - 05:45
it was a nice environment like there are multiple music playing
05:45 - 05:48
everywhere because they're displaying different electronics
05:48 - 05:50
and they bring different things.
05:52 - 05:58
The next story went to his famous footwear and I love famous footwear.
05:58 - 06:02
I used to shop there a lot, not so much now, everything is online,
06:03 - 06:06
but um the environment was great as you can see
06:06 - 06:09
she's just a ton of shoes and different sizes.
06:09 - 06:11
The environment was well lit
06:11 - 06:19
and there was only one personnel, so I had to have to have made a purchase. I had to
06:19 - 06:22
stick around and wait until that one person
06:23 - 06:23
um
06:24 - 06:28
service to other customers who are in the house and then come at the checkout.
06:28 - 06:32
And what I find interesting is that for famous footwear
06:32 - 06:34
that is a franchise only has
06:35 - 06:36
one employee,
06:36 - 06:41
they're working at a time and there's a sign there that says um we are hiring so
06:42 - 06:44
I think they're in the process of getting
06:45 - 06:49
customers and they were very calm uh
06:50 - 06:51
patient, you know,
06:51 - 06:55
they're understandable that there's only one person and environment was nice.
07:00 - 07:03
My next stop was dicks um Dicks known for
07:03 - 07:07
all type of you know sporting gear or whatever.
07:07 - 07:13
So I went inside there and the environment had high ceiling,
07:13 - 07:18
they had a nice outdoor type music going on and
07:20 - 07:24
the environment was just filled with a lot of activity
07:24 - 07:28
because it's fishing season and people are fishing for salmon.
07:29 - 07:30
Um, the personnel,
07:30 - 07:34
they were dispersed all over so it will take a while for
07:34 - 07:37
you to get to them because this is a massive store.
07:38 - 07:41
Um, some products that they sell our boats and
07:41 - 07:47
you know swimming gear and they bring a lot of brands like Nike, Adidas and puma.
07:48 - 07:51
They also specialize in gym equipments.
07:51 - 07:51
Um,
07:51 - 07:55
there were a lot of customers walking around and what
07:55 - 07:58
I find interesting is that they have a pro club.
07:58 - 08:02
So if you're really into what you're into and you're a professional,
08:03 - 08:03
um,
08:04 - 08:09
they'll have you sign up and then you can be a part of that pro club.
08:09 - 08:13
So when you come in you have your own specialized theory that you go to for
08:13 - 08:15
your products as a professional
08:18 - 08:26
and this is concludes my observation lab for most part apart from american eagle,
08:26 - 08:27
I felt welcome.
08:27 - 08:30
I did a lot of purchases this weekend
08:30 - 08:33
and I hope you enjoyed my presentation.
08:34 - 08:35
I really
08:35 - 08:39
like the different stores because they provide something unique,
08:40 - 08:41
you know,
08:41 - 08:43
and they're not all the same.
08:44 - 08:49
Um, thank you. My name is Dalton Atkinson. I hope you enjoyed my presentation
